W. um- ADMINISTRATION PRINCIPAL Every newspaper has its editor-in-chief who keeps the paper running smoothly. Here at Washington Senior High School our editor-in-chiefi' is Mr. Garden E. Miniclier, principal. He keeps the edi- tionsi' of Prexies up-to-date by bringing in new ideas and procedures from his contacts on the St. Paul city-wide com- mittee and many summer and winter workshops. ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL The genial but efficient managing edi- tor at Washington is Mr. George Ifirkelyf, assistant principal. He helps cub re- porters stay in line and get their copy in on time, and even gives the veteran reporters a guiding hand at times. He also is active on city committees and in workshops, giving fresh ideas when they are needed in the school program. COUNSELORS Administrating tests to check students' abilities, progress, and interests is the main job of Washingtons' counselors, M iss Constance Howe and M r. jess Wichman. Through guidance towards scholarships they also give veteran Prexie reporters an assist in getting into specialized fields best suited to their talents. Besides becoming a very informative editor, in his association with the cub reporters, he also became a coach for Washington's hockey team. Two years ago, along with his other duties, he be- came our part time student council adviser. His work there made him even more popular with the cubs. Since then, he has been affectionately called 'iPop.U Turner. This year Pop became a full time student council advisor, 'ceditingn this year's student council activities and helping us to enjoy them more. During 5th period each day a group of students meet, for credit, to plan the activities of the student body. This is the executive board of the student council, the student govering body of the school. President this year was Kurt Dey, vice-president, Sandy Fudenburgg secretary, Pat Simpson, andtreasurer, Dick Portner. This group has worked hard all year to sponsor such events as Snow Day, Operation St. Kris, Sophomore Get Acquainted Dancef, Christmas Seal Drive, and, something new this year after an absence of three years, individual pictures of the members of all three classes. Dahlquist. 10 Council Executive Board , Four years ago a new group of cub reporters Qfreshmenj entered the pressroom fWashington High Schoolj for the first time. Before them were four years of training which was a requirement for their own first by-line Cdiplomaj. This is the class of 1958. Miss DeEtte Knowlton was appointed class advisor and has been a constant help and guide to us. She was not only an advisor, but a friend fo whom we could come when we were troubled. We wish to . express our gratitude and appreciation for her help. In general terms we were not any different from any previous classes. ' We elected ofhcers and staged special events like all other classes before us. In our sophomore year we chose our first class ofiicers: Don Kieger, president, Gerald Godfrey, vice president, Kurt Dey, secretary, and Corrine Ulbrich, treasurer. In our junior year we chose a new set of officers: Dennis Gilson, president, Kathleen Zangs, vice president, Geraldine Trantham, secretary, and Kurt Dey, treasurer. We also sponsored the junior- Senior Prom, a very successful affair with the Theme Dreams This brings us toward the end of our training, our preparation is nearly complete. We have one more year, this is the final step before our by-lines. As our officers this year we have chosen Patricia Hennessey, president, Micheal Alcott, vice president, Marcelia Orlando, secretary, and Marylyn Weber, treasurer. Our Homecoming festivities were reigned over by Her Majesty Colleen Grifiith and King Kurt Dey. Also in this full and final year we have presented our Senior Class Play, Life with Father. We entered the press room as cubs to complete our four years of training. Now we have our by-linen and are ready to meet the deadline. This is not the end but the beginning. For now we will go forth into life to publish our own first editions. In our four years at Washington we have made many friends, among them two who are no longer a part of the living body which makes up the senior class. These two people have been taken from us by a much stronger and wiser being than this earth has to offer. These two people we knew and loved. They were a part of our team, they each had a role to play until the day which was chosen for their departure. We think of them especially at commencement time. Darlene, who was a small, delicate individual, was quite different from what you might expect. Here was a truly wonderful person. She was unusually gay and was always ready to join in the fun that was going on around her. She was always ready with a smile and said Hello when she passed you in the halls. She might have been com- pared to a warm spring day, cheerful and bright. Her personality was a blossom, sweet and overflowing with youth. This vibrancy she possessed never dwindled and in her presence it was always spring. She had many, many friends and on a spring day in 1955, the day of her departure, a shadow fell over Washington because of the loss of one of our life giving members. We can truly say we are proud that we were able to give her some enjoyment in life. Only our Father knows the reason for taking away one whose spirit was always happy and whose presence always brought a beam of sunlight into our lives. DARLENE REINHARDT WILLIAM ZSCHOKKE Bill, as he was knovm' to us, was a quiet boy, not very talkative or physically outstanding and yet you know if you ever talked to hiin you knew that he was' a special being. After you got through his outer shy-ness you saw that he possessed a quality not many have. When he spoke to you he said his words slowly and deliberately. He always met your eyes squarely and listened attentively when you spoke to him. His words were always kind and his friendly way made you feel as though you were a spe- cial friend of his. He possessed a warmth which made you want to talk to him and be his friend. This warmth he had stemmed from his love of God, people, and life. This love of life was not expressed in gaiety and talkativeness. This was something you saw in his face and eyes. This was his goodness. During our junior year Bill was taken from this earth and from us by the gentle hand of God. We do not question God's reason for this, but we miss Bill and remember him especially at the time of our graduation. The first was the annual Christmas card sale. It was the profits from this sale that make possible the gala Junior-Senior Prom held at the Lowry Hotel. New projects for this year were the candy sale and the Junior Class Play. This was considered quite an accomplishment for the new cub reporters. Last, but not least, the juniors made the all important selections of their class rings. Taking on the responsibilities of leadership were the following officers: president, Pat Simpson, vice president, Aida Anderson, secretary, Donna Secordg and treas- urer, Bonnie Hasse. From the initiative shown by this class it is apparent to all the school that there is a promising group of senior reporters in the Washington Press Room. ROW 1: A. Anderson, G. Kunshierhj. Like so much batter in cake rings. This year's sophomore class showed great promise of leadership and has already displayed their eagerness to plan and participate in school events. In the Snow-Day assembly four members of the sophomore class, Carol Tako, Evelyn Erickson, Anita Cherry, and Adrian Hertog, planned and took part in a dramatization of the 32nd birthday of Washington High School. While at Como Junior High School, Adrian Hertog was president, Joan Kubitschek, secretary, and Carol Tako and Don Dahlquist committee chairmen of the student council. C ross-Country With a larger turn-out than he has had in recent years, Coach Daniel Hansen brought his cross-country squad up to where they were losing by the smallest of margins. In their four losses, the stand-out single performance was Dick Flipp's second place against Johnson. Flipp, Bob Sylvester, and Roger Wadell went to the city meet. ROW I: Mr. Byron Gibbs, D. Tennis Team An inexperienced but eager tennis team under Coach Byron Gibbs won one out of eight conference contests during the 1957 season, but returning intact for 1958, the group promises a better record. Ronald Menier was the top individual player, and Dick Portner and Gary Ash were co-captains. Varsity Track Team Washington's track team had its best season in more than Hve years by gaining three wins against two losses. The relay team won all live meets and broke the school record. Junlor Cagers With the smallest, lightest squad in many years, coach Robert Ryan's BM Squad basketball team had the roughest season on record, losing nine games and winning none. Here at Washington Senior High School our editor-in-chief is Mr. Garden E. Minz'e!z'er, principal. He keeps the edi- tions of Prexies up-to-date by bringing in new ideas and procedures from his contacts on the St. Paul city-wide com- mittee and many summer and winter workshops. ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL The genial but efficient managing edi- torn at Washington is Mr. George Ifirkelyz, assistant principal. He helps cub re- porters stay in line and get their copy in on time, and even gives the veteran reporters a guiding hand at times. He also is active on city committees and in workshops, giving fresh ideas when they are needed in the school program. COUNSELORS Administrating tests to check students' abilities, progress, and interests is the main job of Washingtons' counselors, M iss Constance Howe and Mr. jen Wiehman. Through guidance towards scholarships they also give veteran Prexie reporters an assist in getting into specialized fields best suited to their talents. We wish to , express our gratitude and appreciation for her help. In general terms we were not any different from any previous classes. - We elected officers and staged special events like all other classes before us. In our sophomore year we chose our first class officers: Don Kieger, president, Gerald Godfrey, vice president, Kurt Dey, secretary, and Corrine Ulbrich, treasurer. In our junior year we chose a new set of officers: Dennis Gilson, president, Kathleen Zangs, vice president, Geraldine Trantham, i secretary, and Kurt Dey, treasurer. WILLIAM ZSCHOKKE DARLENE REINHARDT WILLIAM ZSCHOKKE Bill, as he was known' to us, was a quiet boy, not very talkative or physically outstanding and yet you know if you ever talked to him you knew that he was' a special being. After you got through his outer shytness you saw that he possessed a quality not many have. 34 3 A. Y Pat Simpson Aida Anderson Donna Secord Bonnie Hasse Juniors Try New Things This year's junior class, with the guidance of their advisor, Mr. Daniel Hansen, sponsored several projects, some of these untried by previous classes. j The Hrst was the annual Christmas card sale. Kunshier,J. Like so much batter in cake rings. This yearls sophomore class showed great promise of leadership and has already displayed their eagerness to plan and participate in school events. Cross-Country With a larger turn-out than he has had in recent years, Coach Daniel Hansen brought his CFOSS-Country squad up to where they were losing by the smallest of margins. In their four losses, the stand-out single performance was Dick Flipp's second place against Johnson. Flipp, Bob Sylvester, and Roger Wadell went to the city meet. ROW I: Mr. Byron Gibbs, D. Sophomore Russell Schoeller went to the state meet in the parallel bars and the mats, while Richard Teele, Clarence Wittman, and Richard Portner were stal- warts also during the season. Varsity Track Team Washington's track team had its best season in more than five years by gaining three wins against two losses. The relay team won all five meets and broke the school record. The boys setting this record were Kurt Dey, Tom Davenport, Ham- merlind, and Marty Strecker. Kurt Dey was top point getter on Coach Allen Cuthbert's 1957 squad. Fleet-footed Johnny Fiandaca and Don Weber, backs, broke away for some sensational gains during the season, while a fighting line opened the necessary holes in the defense. Junlor Cagers With the smallest, lightest squad in many years, coach Robert Ryan's B Squad basketball team had the roughest season on record, losing nine games and winning none. The boys never gave up even' in the face of discouraging results against stronger teams. Adrian Hertog showed promise and was a constant spark to the game but inexperienced group. ROW I: J. Green, L.
