In Memoriam - John F Radios broadcast the terrible news. Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country. 5 Kennedy November 21 was wet and rainy, shoes were covered with mud and the walkways were crowded with students trying to keep out of the downpour. The following day, Friday, Nov- ember 22, started as a happy oppo- site. The air was crisp, but the sun was shining. Walkways were dec- orated with purple and white crepe- paper to remind everyone that the last home game of the football sea- son was to be played. The first three periods of the day went quick- ly. During fourth hour the news that threw Washington High School and the rest of the world into shock was heard. Principal William Berry's voice was heard over the public ad- dress system: l am sorry to an- nounce that President Kennedy and Governor Connally of Texas have lust been shot while riding in a Dal- las motorcade. An awesome silence fell over the school. Some who were able to shake themselves free of the numb- ing shock began to pray, others cried, and still others shook their heads in disbelief. By the end of second lunch, it was realized that President John F. Kennedy was dead. The remaining periods of the day were spent lis- tening to available radios for the heart-rending details. When the student body, faculty, and staff left the grounds, the sun had lost its glow and the blue sky seemed somehow very dark. The President's death touched the students deeply, maybe because as young adults they were becoming more aware of the world outside their single self, or perhaps they could hear the words spoken by him in his address lust two years and ten months before.
