INTRODUCTION The growth and construction of the Old South- west was an enterprise accomplished by the enthu- siasm that typified the pioneer spirit. As each generation contributed to the progress of the Old Southwest so shall each class contribute to the growth of Washington High School. Compare the similarity between the new settlers and our incoming freshmen. The freshmen have left the security of grade school to face a new frontier just as the settlers left the security of their eastern farms, villages and friends to face the unknown qualities of the vast southwest. Now that the fears are mostly conquered, the settler and the sophomore have more confidence in their thoughts and deeds. During this period they start to make plans for the future. As upper classmen, juniors have chosen some fields of endeavor. It might be athletics, music, dra- matics, or scholastics. The same stage of develop- ment found the great Southwest land divided by the pioneers into geographical areas, such as, towns, ranches, mines and farms. At the conclusion of their high school years, the seniors have planned patterns for their future. While gaining experiences they have at the same time made many worthwhile contributions to the school. They have upheld and sustained traditions and pro- moted the general welfare of the school, thereby contributing to the growth and progress of Washing- ton High. By the same token it can be said that in the establishment of social, economic and political pat- terns the residents of the Old Southwest territory gave us the basis for our present day standards of traditions and ideals. As each generation depended on the preceeding for guidance, so do the seniors set a standard for the upcoming freshmen. 4
