Local History Branch 317 W. Highway 24 Independence. MO 64050 Washingtonts originality blends past and present Washington has long been known for its beauti- ful old homes as shown in these two pictures. After 250 years, George Washington has re- mained as one of our nationts most respected symbols. No less than 400 cities, 32 counties, one state, and countless other lakes, mountains and parks are named after our first president, but only one has the distinction of being the ttOrigi- nalh and that is Washington, NC. Originality or being first, is reflected in many aspects at WHS. The WHS band has taken styles from the past and transformed them to the present as reflected in the present band uniforms. llila...t ' iiiii mnmmnnni Washington Heritage invades school life ' Originality is reflected in all aspects of ; WHS from Stunt Night, as the Sopho- ! mores above depict, to the prom as Lau- rel Mason deligently prepares for that special night. This heritage is seen in the band, the leadership, as exemplified by Mr. Wil- son, principal, and Christy Jackson,s ef- forts on the Jr.Sr. ts waxvxxv-Nsuk s WASHING mm HmmnN-FUW 73 1, THE ORIGINAL us Amy Burroughs and Thomas Davenport get emotional over the traditional Stunt Night Laura Rhodes, Libba Lassiter, Holly Cherry, and Tracy Smith entertain the Shiekess during the Sophomore stunt. The Jr. Sr. prom, Fantasy Island, renews an old tradition at WHS. The Art Club's mural has begun a new tradi- tion of beautification of the building and campus. 10 Spirit becomes evident as Wayne Wooden strives to cross the finish line first and Maren Wegmann leads the girlhs tennis team to the regular season cham- pionship. Coach Bing Mitchell continues this spirit as he urges the Pack to victory. w- hw m M Spirit becomes evident in series of firsts The idea of striving to be first is not only evident in the final score but the fansispirits Of support. The drive is seen in the expressions of concentration on the faces of Robin McLean and Steve Boyd, pictured above. This attitude is continued throughout a series of firsts in Washington High School. The 1982-1983 football team has achieved the first winning season since 1978. The 19 seniors have been the first to go through three years with Coach Mitchell and his programs of weightlifting and a . . PRIDE!!! The girls, tennis team added more links to the chain of spirit by picking up where last years wres- tlers left off. The WHS wrestling team was undefeated in the NEAC conference. A series of firsts is not necessar- ily limited to sports. It appears in academic life as well. The class of 1983 is the first class to graduate under the leadership of Principal Ronnie Wilson. This is just one of the many firsts for the Class of 1983. The chain theory started by Mitchell has carried to the other sports by showing that you do not have to have a winning score but rather a winning spirit to back it up. 11 More firsts are evident in the spirit exhib- ited by students and spectators alike. The feeling of being first was achieved by Ms Pertillefs tennis team Another first was the beginning of girls, weightlifting. Lisa Moore builds a palm tree for Jr. Sr. Kevin Clancy and Tim Melton enjoy their open lunch privilege. Anita Payne and Charlene Smith relax in the hall while Tammy Respass and Mike Bier- man stop to chat. Brian Goodwin watches intensely from the sidelines for a change. Will Mayo and Kemp Edwards ham it up during an assembly given by the chorus classes. STUDENT LIF E 1982 STUNT NIGHT 8x: x x Stunt Night 1082 was a great one, especially for the seniors. The seniors won first place with their skit ttMoonlight Madness The sophomores came in second with their HTorn Between Two Arabs 'i And the iuniors came in third with their skit HThe Boys from Company 83. After many davs of writing a skit. choosing characters. constructing scenery, sewing costumes, and rehears- ing, Stunt Night was a reatity and not a distant night. By 7:30 pm on that Saturday evening, Washington High School's auditorium was packed with people and then the curtain opened. By the end of Stunt Night. thousands of eyes had focused on the sophomores, juniors, and seniors who participated. Even though the seniors came in first and the juniors came in third, the important thing to remember was that winning wasnit everything, Every student who participat- ed in Stunt Night henefitted. HMoonshine Madness was about three witches, Angela Kenlaw, Marilyn Johnson, and Ryle Potts who decided they must make their last batch of moonshine before midnight. Energy efficiency is the name of the game for carpentry this year. Billy Singletonls carpentry class has made a change in plans for the first time in eleven years. UEnergy efficiency, explains Singleton, uis using more insulation and thermal pane windows to'keep heat from escaping. Singleton sees this as the direction in which houses will turn in the future. Washington should be proud to have an organization like Singletonls carpentry class. We are the first and original school in our area to have students building and selling homes; and for the first time this year, energy efficient homes. To the right, Tony Williams diligently works on the new energy efficient house. , This is the first year Health Occupations Education has been offered at i WHSi The students were taught the process of communications, the x understanding of nutrition, and studied the anatomy of the human body. Winston-Salem became the summer home for five. Heather Kirby and Emily Blount participated in the dance division; Kim Roy and Stefanie Smith - academics, and Amy Coiner - art. Govenorts School East, located in Laurenburg, welcomed the remaining four. Attending were: Mike Bierman and Hack High - academics, Amanda Toler - art, and Becky Respess - dance. My summer at NC. Govenorts School was un- doubtedly the most rewarding experience of my life thus far. My love for the performing arts was greatly intensified through the exposure 'to many talented people. Probably the most notable enrichment was experiencing the pride and dedication that is common in musicians, actors, artists, dancers, etc. These same wonderful people enabled me to learn so much about myself. I realized how important it is to look beyond the physical aspects in a person; many times some- thing beautiful lies within,n commented Becky Re- spess. Later the State Li- brary Association took the idea and spread it to sixty-three counties. The Quiz Bowl originated at WHS in the 1980-1981 school year. During this year, we participated in competi- tions and won a finalist position in the district level which qualified us to move to the state competition in Dur- ham, NC. This is the fourth year of Quiz Bowl existance and WHS has participated for three years. The Quiz Bowl is spon- sored by the BHM Regional Library in this area. Whois Who is voted on by the class and the decision as to who receives this honor is based on the number of votes each candidate gets. This honor is for those members of the class that the class as a whole feels is most representative of the characteristics which exemplify the class as a group. These characteristics consist of leadership qualities, school spirit, ambition, and dedication. Other traits are also important. The class votes on peers who are athletic, usually leaders in their respective sports, and who are popular in the sense of being well liked by teachers and classmates. Pictured below are the 1982-1983 Whois Who recipients. These Seniors are the ones that were brain .. x, ,, selected by their classmates as being most outstanding in the class. It is a great honor and a great responsibility. These Seniors are challenged to continue to live up to this honor. The Seniors are: first row: Will Mayo, Laurel Mason, Robin McLean, Rae Marie Hall, Dede Lewis, Anita Payne, Melanie Avolis, Marian Inabinett, and Kim Roy. Second row: Seth Edwards, Patrick Olson, Vance Moore, Beverly Wells, Thomas Davenport, Jeff Brady, Steve Boyd, Jeff Rumley, Hack High, David Koepnick. On the pages that follow, each of these recipients has written a few things about himself. The insights that are included here should help to enable the reader to see why these people are truly Whois Who at WHS. Melanie Ann Avolls Field of Study: Undecided School: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Comments: Throughout my past years at Washington High School I have heard people in the graduating class try to describe the memories of their Senior year. Now that the time has approached for my classmates and me, I realized that no words could be more convincing than the strong bond between the class of I83, sporting events, Stunt Night, and countless other memories. Each moment is cherished greatly whether or not it's sad or happy, for these have been the best years of my life. Steve Boyd Field of Study: Undecided School: NC. State Comments: I hope that I will be a winner at NC. State. Jeff Brady Field of Study: Computer Science School: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Comments: I hate to leave WHS. I have always been told that our high school days were the best days of your Iife. I believe it now that I'm leaving because these past years cannot be expressed in a million words. The closeness with your friends is overwhelming. I wish I could do it all again. 35 36 Seth Edwards Field of Study: Dentistry or Sports Medicine School: Duke University Comments: My memories of my high school will always be remembered as some of the best times of my life. Sports and Stunt Nights were great, but my experiences with my friends will stand out the most. Thomas Edward Davenport ll Field of Study: Business Administration or Textiles School: UNC - Chapel Hill or NCSU Comments: The memories of years at WHS will probably be cherished longer than any memory I will have. I will always remember playing on a championship football team and advancing to the state finals in track. Hack High Field of Study: Law or Business School: UNC-CH Comments: My advice to the underclassmen is to find out what you want out of high school and do it because high school doesnlt last long. When you're a sophomore you look up to the juniors and seniors; when youlre a junior youlre stuck in the middle, and then before you know it youlre a senior getting ready for life. Make the most of such a short time. - a i xi vi N m sari? N N: Z: k y, David Koepnlck Field of Study: Electrical Engineering School: North Carolina State University Comments: Washington High School has provided many memorable experiences that I will cherish forever. With the help of the concerned faculty and the friendly students, I feel that I have completed the past three years to the best of my ability with as few hardships as possible. I am forever indebted to both. Rae Marie Hall Field of Study: Business Administration School: Peace College Comments: As my days at WHS pproach an end I begin to realize just how many wonderful memories that have been given to me. I am aware of the bad also because these are where we truly learn the real lessons and disappointments of life. But through it all, the friends and relationships that I have made will always be foremost in my memories of WHS. Marlon lnablnett Field of Study: AdvertisingIDesign School: UNC - Chapel Hill Comments: High school is an important time in ones lite, and Washington is a good place to go through that time. WHS is not too big and not too small so the school can do lots of activities and involve lots of students. These activities add on to the education received in class. 37 38 mwwvu. Will Mayo Field of Study: Law School: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Comments: Now that graduation grows near I can only wish that I knew what path I am going to follow. If you know what you want to be in life prepare for it and strive for it the best you can in high school. Dede Lewis Field of Study: Undecided School: UNC - Wilmington Comments: My three years at WHS have been quite an experience to me. Memories of FCA, Stunt Night, JR. SR., sports, and Homecoming will be with me forever. But most importantly I will always cherish the friends I have made and the special times that we have shared. Vance Moore Field of Study: Engineering School: Undecided Comments: My last three years have been highlighted with football and baseball. I wish I could do it all over again. Patrick Brian Olson Field of Study: Engineering or Political Science School: Air Force Academy Comments: I feel that Washington High School has been a sound stepping stone on my long trek to the accomplishment of my goals. I feel I have learned of pride, discipline, and self-sacrifice. But the thing I will miss most is my most treasured gift, good friends. Laurel Mason Field of Study: Human Anatomy and Physiology School: Meredith College Comments: Attending WHS has enriched my life in many ways. Through touch classes, extracurricular activities, cheerleading and FCA I have learned the importance of open- mindedness, patience and communication as well as responsibility. Just this fraction of my life I feel will serve as a firm foundation for achievement and growth as I anticipate a life of struggles and adventures that will eventually lead to victory and fulfillment. As I learn, the more I realize how much there is to know. Anita Payne Field of Study: Chemical Engineering School: Howard University School of Engineering Comments: My days at WHS are memorable ones. I grew each day with each thing that I experienced. I will remember those who helped me to understand and most of all I will remember this school for what it stands for and what it believes in. Kim Roy Field of Study: Law School: UNC - Chapel Hill Comments: I will always cherish my years at WHS and being a member of Whols Who is a true honor for me. I hope the friendships Ilve made here will all last throughout my college days and long after. I feel that the most important thing to remember during high school is that you should make the most of life while youlre still young and that happiness cannot be found alone. I also feel that involvement in extracurricular activities is important in forming a well-rounded person because it gives you a chance to develop yourself and grow with people who have similar interests. Jeff Rumley Field of Study: Medicine School: UNC - Chapel Hill Comments: My three years at WHS have given me many memorable moments. The excitement of Stunt Night, the thrill of Jr-Sr, and many friends. But I think my participation in athletics has given me the most rewarding times. The outpouring of love and support given to all of us on the 82 Pam Pack football team will hold a very special place for me. I'll always be grateful. WW amseu . aw W7Wli4 Reggie Stevenson Field of study: Criminal Justice lJuvenile Officerl School: University of North Carolina at Charlotte Comments: While pondering over those many high school memories, none are quite as extraordinary as being selected ths Who by my gratifying peers. It is not those brain bursting tests nor the days when nothing seems to go right, but Proms, Stunt Nights, Homecomings, clubs, sports, and friends that I remember the most. Coaches, teachers, and figure heads have had the greatest influence in my achievements. As Rev. Jessie Jackson once said, uIt's not your aptitude, but attitude that determines your altitude; is the thought that I wish to leave to every incoming students with any ambitious goals in life. Beverly Wells Field of study: Banking and Computer Science School: Meredith College or UNC - Wilmington Comments: I would like to encourage everyone to take time to fully appreciate all the good in their lives, especially the close relationships between friends that make life worth living. For every bad experience something positive can be gained. Look ahead in life and strive for everything because you have failed only when you have failed to try. Wayne Wooden Field of study: Radio Broadcasting School: ECU Comments: I understand that only a few people are chosen and I am very proud to be one of the ths Who recipients this year. When I look back on my years at WHS, there will be happy times to remember. I do hope WHS will continue to be a success and if my peers feel that I contributed to itls success this year, then I am glad I didnlt let anyone down. THE ELECTRIC LIBRARIAN When in the library, do you ever get a tingling sensation? If so, you may be standing a little too close to Mrs. Blythe. Itts been told that a few years ago, while Mrs. Blythe and a group of friends were at the beach, light- ning struck very nearby. After experiencing a slight electric shock, Mrs. Blythe found that her body magnetism had been altered. As a result, she has to have her watch demagnetized every few months. Touchdown! The crowd shouts with excitement. Shane Manuel arouses the crowd with an- other amazing touchdown. That was a beautiful runlll Shane may shine as a superstar on the field, but when seen walking down the halls at school, one wouldn,t know it was the same per- son. Shane uses his modest ways to try to get out of receiving all the praise. However, he deserves all the recognition he gets. Shane has been working a long time to be- come such a great football player. As a sophomore on the varsity Shane Manuel rushes toward his favorite spot - the goal line. Shane, a sophomore, has much to be proud of. team, Shane has definitely made his mark. When asked what its like being a sophomore on the team, Shane replied, ill receive a lot of hassle from the Seniors, but every- one is treated equally? Once Shane breaks away he,s al- most impossible to catch. Shane re- marked, liWhen I make a touch- down, I'm scared and excited at the same time. As I run down the field, I just keep going and hope no one catches me? When asked about next yeafs team he commented, llI feel that many coaches may look down on us next year because we wonlt have many experienced Seniors. It will be like a rebuilding year, but I feel that we are going to surprise a lot of people. Shane hopes to play football through his senior year. He commented that even though he enjoys football, he hopes to get a scholarship in track, which is his favorite sport. Shane finished his sophomore year with three touchdowns, eight receptions for 231 yards, and sev- en rushes for 241 yards. Included in Shanels touchdowns was a 92 yard run which set a new conference re- cord. Even though Shane is shy and modest, he deserves every bit of recognition he gets! Sophomores catch . There have been many changes that affect the present Sophomores. One major, and new, requirement is in the area of units required for . graduation. Our class will be the first to be required to complete 21 units for graduation. Added to the original 18 units - are 1 extra unit of PE. and 2 electives. This makes a total of 2 units of RE. and 9 electives, three units above the old requirements. Because of the higher requirements, the present Sophomores will have to set higher goals in order to graduate. 1 J.T.
