In¬ stinctively we threw our hands over our faces as the blue ' 59 Buick crashed into the side of our car. We felt ourselves being flung through the windshield by the tremendous impact of the collision. As we hit the ground our entire lives flashed through our minds. John Small School, 1947. Thirty small girls and boys sat at tables drawing pictures of farm animals. On the playground children were see-sawing. One of them slipped and fell; and as his cry of anguish reached us, the scene faded and disappeared. Seventh Street School, Fifth Grade. When the pupils reached school that Monday, they noticed bricks piled high outside. There was a rumor that the city was going to build a new high school there, but no one seemed to know for sure. Laughter filled the air as the boys besieged other boys on the hill. Finally the invaders succeeded. The ousted group reorgan¬ ized and assaulted the hill themselves. Williamsburg, Seventh Grade. We wandered through the gardens surrounding the Gover¬ nor’s Palace, stopping to examine points of special interest. A year later, the trip to Raleigh. We traveled from place to place, stopping for a while at the Capitol, the State Museum, and other important points. We spent the night at Durham, then left for home the next day after the excitement of a night in a strange place. Our Freshman year. The first Junior Varsity game. We waited with fearful anticipation for the referee to give the signal that would start the game. The scene changed and we found ourselves at the Latin Club Banquet at the Country Club. Slaves rushed to and fro at the com¬ mands of their lordly Patrician masters. The entire room was decorated in typical Roman style. William Neal Reynolds Coliseum. North Carolina State College ' s fabulous basketball team met almost certain defeat at the hands of Carolina’s team, rallied, and took the lead. The crowd rose with a deafening roar of appreciation. Another landmark! Our Sophomore year. An undefeated Junior Varsity team and the best Varsity team in the history of the school combined to make this our best football season ever. We were at Canton, watching that great team suffer the defeat that made them human after they had trampled everyone else. We saw their last desperate drive yield a touchdown that salvaged them--the only bright light in a dark day. Our Junior year. Events flew through our minds with such speed that we lost perspective. We glimpsed a thermometer in the lobby rising over the top during the magazine sale, setting a new record; John Small School and the Glee Club Concert, voices breaking into song; the Junior-Senior, with rockets and satellites floating in the air; and capping exercises, with the Juniors meeting the Seniors for the thrilling cap exchange. Our Senior year fled with appalling swiftness--the Senior play, the trip to New York, and the Baccalaureate Sermon. As our gaze focused on graduation night, the kaleidoscope of events faded and we awoke to find ourselves in an ambulance, miraculously alive after all. Historians, Sam Long Kathy Wiley ' Px jkAecy Hello, Hope, I haven ' t seen you in years! Where in the world have you been keeping yourself? Certainly I haven ' t been where you have been, because I can ' t remember the last time I saw you. Well, sit down! Let’s have a coke. Wyni, did you ever finish your nurses ' training? Yes, I did. I am now working in Hodgesville. Hodgesville? Yes, the town named for its beloved doctor, Rusty Hodges. His nurses are Virginia Daniels, Jane Scott, Marie Hill, Betty Parker, and Martha Parker. The receptionist at the hospital is Nancy Jean Edwards. ” That reminds me. Barbara Alligood is in charge of a nursery here in town. I hear the children love her. Speaking of children, did you see where Joyce Whichard was named ' Mother of the Year?’ Yes, I did. Didn ' t Margaret Braddy have the same honor last year? I believe she did. Talking about our old classmates, do you realize that you are in Benny Taylor ' s Drug Store, and that if you would look over at the television set, you would see Buddy Swain ' s show, ' Swing and Sway With Swain? ' Yes, I read about Buddy’s show. I believe his singing stars are Eugene Garris and John Henry Everson. Wasn’t his guest one week the new dancing sensation, Diane Light Toes Dixon? Last week the Rebel Combo appeared. The class of ' 59 is well-represented, because the Combo is made up of Dick Peck, Johnnie Respess, Arthur Williams, Dick Jones, and Billy Jones. Their star soloist is the one and only Jane Page. I got a letter from Joan Asby the other day, and she and Merdieth Lilley are planning to become partners. They have gotten up a comedy act and will appear on TV soon. The class of 1959 was quite talented, wasn ' t it, Hope? It was tops, and it still is! Do you remember our class poem? Carol Smith won a Pulitzer Prize for it. Patricia Ayscue and Lou Moore own a smart shop in Paris. They design all the clothes they sell, and their models are Iris Langley, Iris McLellan, Carol Hawkins, Valerie Rawls, and Pam Toler. Pat and Lou aren’t the only designers though. Leroy Elks just designed a sports car, the Speed King. I read about Leroy ' s achievement in an article written by Pat Brown who is now a reporter for the FAMILY MAGAZINE edited by Nancy Thompson. Speaking of reading, have you read a new MAD MAGAZINE created by Milton Coyle and James Asby? No, I haven ' t, but I would like to congratulate you on your novel, THE NIGHT MY LOVE DIED. Aren ' t they making a movie based on it? Yes, it stars Kathy Wiley, Barbara Harrington, and that great teen-age idol, Tommy Moore. It is being directed by Jerry Morrow, and Betsy Davis is in charge of the hair styles. Sudie Mae Silverthrone, secretary to Gene Mish of the Starlight Theater, told me that it was going to appear here in the near future. Our class is represented in the sports world also. Hodges Hackney and Zoph Potts are the world ' s greatest golf professionals, while Gus Youmans is now playing football on the team that has just been awarded the Good Sportsmanship Trophy. The team is coached by that well- known coach, Leonard Sheppard. J. A. Jackson, Larry Jones, Danny Lupton, Steve Cox, and James Pollard are some of the better known baseball players of our times. Mary Elizabeth Noe has just been elected the first woman president of the Athletic Association. I was in Washington, D. C. last month and saw Joan Wells. Joan, Jane Robbins, Sandra Woolard, Peggy Schueck, Sylvia Eborn, Margie Manning, and Barbara Whitehurst are all work¬ ing for the F. B. I. Also in the business world are Cynthia Paramore, Mary Ann Smith, and Ruby Gaskins who are with the American Telephone Co. Becky Little is a famous artist, and Denise Owens is a mathematician. Rena S. Terrell and Eleanor Hodges are running a fashionable girl ' s school on the Hudson. Jackie Lewis and Yvonne Evans are teaching in Philadelphia. Winkie Jackson was teaching at Chocowinity but recently resigned because her husband was offered a better coaching position up in the northern part of Pennsylvania. Speaking of education, Frances Farmer is affiliated with Woman ' s College. Her position is Dean of Women. I read the other day where Roddy Andrew was just named Ambassador to the court of St. James. Also in politics appears Barbara Morris ' name quite often. She is running for Senator from North Carolina. Wyni, whatever happened to our class president, Hannis Latham? He is now President of the Air Force Academy. Also making a career of the Air Force are David Bullock, Jackie Cole, D. W. Lane, Nat Thompson, and Reginald Stalls. By the way, didn ' t I just see where Billy McCleney, Gilbert Baker, and Danny Boyd received some type of award? Yes, they received special recognition for being the most outstanding highway patrolmen in the United States. Did you know that Dallas Congelton is now warden of Alcatraz prison? I hear that he is being partial to some man named Luke. Do you know him? No, I don ' t know Luke. But whatever happened to Blount Rumley and Armistead Long? Blount is practicing law, and Armistead is a well-known architect. Chap Bowers has just joined Armistead as a partner in the firm. I hear that Melanie Wallace, Jean Warren, and Ann Perry are now airline hostesses for Travel-Safe Air Lines owned and operated by Beverly Gautier. Some of the pilots for this air¬ line are Roland Baker, Glen Boyd, Elbert Calcutt, and Jack Meekins. I saw in the New York Times that Glen Day and Sam Long have won the Nobel Prize in Physics, didn ' t you? Richard Paszt has just been made head of the Library of Congress with Virginia Harrell as his first assistant. Guess where I ' m going tonight? I am having dinner at a new restaurant owned by Jean Hull and Edna Tyer. Their chef is that expert on all types of food, Wade Hardison. Don Smith, the radio announcer, will be on hand to interview Anita Cahoon. You remember Anita was crowned Miss Ruritan in 1958 and here she is Miss America. Talent certainly does help, doesn ' t it? Talking about new business openings, have you been to Manning, Tyson, and Waters, Inc. ? That is a tobacco warehouse owned by Ervin Manning, Harold Tyson, and Troy Waters. Their chief auctioneer is Jimmy Everette. By the way, whatever happened to Danny Rhem? He is now owner of Rhem Realty Agency. His secretary is Jo Ann Woolard. Marilyn Wil¬ lard is his bookkeeper. Next to Danny ' s office is the Woolard Woolard Car Lot operated by Dewey and Larry Woolard. Their mechanic is James Thomas. I saw Larry Cox the other day. He is now owner of a chain of food stores. Two of his managers are Larry Tetterton and Charles Hardy. Do you have any idea where Dorcas Cox is now? Yes, Dorcas, Lou Warner, and Helen Williams are now co-owners of The Modern Dance School. Dottie Morgan and Jo Ann Warren are two of the instructors. Hope, this has been nice, but before it gets too late, I want to go see Bill Alexander. He is the new minister of the First Christian Church here in town. It was wonderful seeing you again, Wyni. Good-bye.
