The doors through which we pass. . . the corridors.. . the minutes of sociabilities be¬ fore class. .. the class rooms... youth coming and going... In the years to come, this yearbook will keep alive the memories gathered during the undergraduate days. The future years will bring new faces and changes to the school scene, but there shall be for us this record of the friends we knew, the things we did, and the memories that are still dear to us. . . Yes, this entrance to our school. . . our beloved W. H. S. that has seen many come and go, stands solidly as the Seniors of each year pass through all too quickly. ? ztccie6 s4t6leUc i s4cCvefiti4e tte it4 )k ’THeetuvUatK To the beloved memory of Calvin Martin, who would have graduated with the Class of ' 57, we, the staff, de¬ dicate this 1957 edition of the Packromak. Although his life was short, Calvin made an indelible mark on the hearts of many. That great enigma, Death, always leaves its scars, but somehow even it cannot mar his be¬ loved memory. In our humble way, we have tried to tell Calvin that although God has taken him away, he will never be forgotten. MR. EDWIN A. WEST Superintendent MR. JOE T. KORNEGAY Principal MR. Class of ' 57 We, the Seniors of Washington High Though we hate to say goodbye Graduate, each with a smiling face And step into the world to take our place. There is fear in our hearts of growing old Of having to tell and not be told Of having to teach as well as learn As we show for all a loving concern. We would like at this time to thank each one Of the faculty for all they have done For the loving kindness, and patience shown As they taught us children, and made us grown. A thanks sincere from every heart As we say goodbye and have to part. Earl Daniels Class Poet Mrs. Williams? Yes? ' fyea t$70 Why, Carole Hodges, what a pleasant surprise! You must be the Mrs. Williams I was told to see about the lab position offered me by Harry Gurganus, your head doctor here at the hospital. Kathryn Everette, this IS a surprise. Do have a seat and tell me about yourself. By the way, whom did you marry? Well, I was married about four years after we left dear old W. H. S. My beloved husband is also married - to a football, so the children and I hardly ever see him. They even call him by his football nickname, ' Single-ton ' Singleton. Cecil is now the assistant manager of the Newport News shipyard. Working with him are a few of our old classmates, Jerry Jackson, Stanley Gurganus, and Durwood Moore. Speaking of our old classmates, Ann Peters, who is also a medical technician, let me in on all the latest gossip - uh, news - the other day. She said that Bartow Houston, now owner of five new Houston-Belk Stores, is having a problem with his little wife, the former Carolyn Mixon. It seems she can’t get along with some of her pupils at school, especially little Marshall Singleton, Jr. (Betty Lou ' s and Marshall ' s, you know). Inciden¬ tally, George Kelley is principal of W. H. S. now; and June Wahmann teaches senior English, when she can get there on time! Yes, we had a good many successful people in our class of ' 57. I hear that Robert Hodges has modernized the works of Einstein, and Dell Swindell is steadily rising in fame as a portrait artist. Oh, and Bill McLean has his own hour-long TV show on Sunday nights, coast to coast. Some of his recent guests were Will Jenkins, protege of Burl Ives; Jane Hardison and her magic violin; Tommye Dawson at the piano; and Ben McHorney with his jazz combo, which includes David Whitley and Harold Yert, who is also a minister. Loretta Bowen is interested in TV, too. She has taken Ann Sothern ' s place on ' Private Secretary ' , Harley Caton has replaced Arthur Godfrey, and Ronald Alligood has become the star of ' Gunsmoke ' . Oh, and how about Don Sawyer ' s taking Elvis’ place on his own show? The reason for this, so I read in CONFIDENTIAL maga¬ zine, which is now edited by Sally Johnson, is because Elvis decided to settle down with his wife. She is the former Ann Page Rhodes, who started as his secretary. Did you know that Kitty Ellington, Annie Laura Hodges, Peggy Hollis, and Nelda Sikes are working for the F. B. I. in Washington, D. C. ? Mike Bailey is in Washington, too. He has just opened the most exclusive night club on the East Coast. Pat Cameron, Betty Lou Parrott, Lavonne Hall, Betty Lou Morris, and Lindsay Britt are his cigarette girls. Jack Warren, Carl Jones, Skybo Langley, and Billy Gilgo are ' bouncers ' for the club, and I hear that they really are making the most of it. Glenda Gilgo, a former policewoman, is working as a detective for the club. Incidentally, Pat Paul was recently selected ' Mother of the Year ' . She has six lovely children - all girls! Some of the other mothers who were nominated for that position were Kazia Paszt Apple, Charlotte Nicholson Upton, Carlynn Jarvis Knott, Pat Sears Hodges, Shirley Underwood Alligood, and Lucy Phillips Windley. By the way, Kathryn, I attended an anniversary party last week for Bunny and Charlie Manning, and Doro¬ thy and Tillmon Boyd. They were married in a double ceremony ten years ago, and they celebrate together every year. Melba Perry, Bunny ' s old side-kick, is secretary to Bryan Grimes, one of Washington ' s finest lawyers. You know, many fine businesses have been organized by some of our old classmates. One of them is ' Woolard, Woolard, and Woolard,’ an extremely large establishment, where bodies are built for busses, trucks, trailers, etc. The owners are Bing, Leroy, and Bobby Dale Woolard. Another business is Leggett ' s Supermarket. Paul Leggett owns not one, but ten supermarkets, which are spread throughout North Carolina. Isn ' t it amazing how we all turned out? Others of our girls have become successful businesswomen. Ada Ellen not only enlarged her father ' s Ford business, but bought out the whole Ford Company and now has a sports car named for her. It ' s called the ' Ada Eagle. ’ Georgia Ann Fuller designed the outside, and Nell Credle de¬ signed the inside. Nell has always said she wanted to be an interior decorator. Speaking of cars, Michael Howerin and Howard Swanner are two of the best mechanics in the country. They ' ve really made a good name for themselves. Not to change the subject, but aren’t taxes awful these days? Cecil and I had to have THREE accountants to help us this year! They were Durwood Cratch, Bradford Tetterton, and Merrill Wallace. Those boys can really figure tax forms. Some others, whom we have in the business fields, are working as bookkeepers and secretaries, such as Joyce Alligood, Bernice Taylor Lucille Whitehurst, Shirley Dixon, Yvonne Mizelle, Julenna Mizelle, and Judy Bridgeman. By the way, with the presidential election coming up this year, I ' m sure several votes will be cast for Donald Ambrose. Jimmy Hackney and his camera surely have caught Donald in some mighty interesting poses during the campaign. Yes, Carole, I ' m sure Don would make a fine president. There are several of our classmates serving Uncle Sam. They are Bobby Murdock, J. T. Sheppard, Glenwood Smith, Bunny Cox, and Billy Latham. Have you read in the papers about the new ' Flynn and Wynne Men’s Shop ' on Daniels Street? It ' s owned and operated by Frank Flynn and Kirby Wynne. The street, as you know, is named for the famous poet, Earl Daniels. Edward Mercer is operating ' Brother ' s Shoe Shop. ' Some of his helpers are Richard and Lindy Hodges, Bill Morgan, and Jack Cleve. How interesting! Bobby Upton, Milton Hodges, and James Leggett are driving Trailway busses, and Preston Whitford is owner of ' Whitford ' s Drug Store, ' which takes up a whole block in Pinetown. That town has really begun to wake up since Tommy Owens became mayor there. Oh my! I must hurry! I have an appointment at ' Reta ' s Beauty Salon, ’ which, by the way, is owned by Reta Daniels. She has two wonderful girls helping her, Sally Joyce Taylor and Shirley Cowal. They can really do wonders with your hair. I ' m so sorry you must go. It ' s really been nice talking over old times with you. We may have a chance to talk again soon, if I get the job. ' Bye now. Good-bye.
