HEBER WINDLEY, Chief Marshal CLASS POEM A FAREWELL The time has come to say goodbye, Alma Mater. To part with one we hold so dear Is difficult without a tear. You must forgive us if we cry, Alma Mater. To you we bid a fond adieu, Alma Mater. When years are bright and wondrous fair How small a part of time they share! Twas yesterday when we met you, Alma Mater. Twelve years have passed, and now we leave, Alma Mater. Those years with you, With glory lade, With glory bright that ne’er will fade, Are over now. And so we grieve, Alma Mater. The time has come to say goodbye, Alma Mater. No more by thee our steps shall be, Though a thousand suns shall shine on thee. Our love is true; it ne ' er will die, Alma Mater. Class Poet- Boots Cahoon CLASS HISTORY It happened, the class elections, and we had been chosen to write the Class History. We tried and tried to think how it could best be done. The dead line was upon us. It was a cold December night, 20 below zero, the weather man said. As we huddled before the fire we became almost hypnotized by the glowing ashes and the leaping flames. Suddenly to our amazement a beautiful girl became visible in the flames. (Was it the flame of life?) I am the class of 1956, she said softly. Why worry about writing my history? Come with me down Memory Lane. That magazine sale! Don ' t you remember all the excitement? It was a glorious success and it turned my thoughts toward the most outstanding event of my life--the Junior-Senior Prom. I was filled with excitement and anticipa¬ tion as I planned what was to be done. And what a great success the outcome was. Those dresses! That banquet! That floor show! Remember! I shall never forget the day I received my class ring. It became the most prized possession of the Junior year and of my life! As she stood there speaking in her low, moving voice, the years seemed to roll back like a scroll unwinding. Once more we were Sophomores struggling with one of the hardest years of our lives, yet always managing, somehow, to accomplish the task which lay just ahead. Time kept marching backwards as Miss 1956 remembered the most frighten¬ ing, exciting year of her life--the year she entered high school as a Freshman. After recalling all this she spoke of year she was born, one sunny September morning in the year 1944, when she began her long climb for educa¬ tion, by entering grammar school. Here she struggled for six long years, only, at long last, reaching Junior High. These years which passed so quickly as Miss 1956 recalled them, had been long and busy ones. Eventually she entered High School. As fond memories of her Senior year rushed through her mind, music filled the air. She knew it was her cue to begin the march which would bring her to the goal she had been striving for--GRADUATION. This had been her guiding star through all the years. The music kept building up and with a crash of chords Miss 1956 vanished before our eyes. With regret, but wonderful memories, we bade her farewell. Amy Lou Hardison Barbara Jean Hodges Historians CLASS PROPHECY Knock, knock, knock. May I come in? Why Audrey! I haven ' t seen you in ages! Do come in and have a seat. My, thisschool building brings back memories. I imagine you think about old times quite often teaching here, Carolyn. ' Yes, I do. By the way, I ' m so glad to have your daughter for one of my students this year. Thank you. Joe Jr. is doing well in school, also. He ' s in the fourth grade this year and has Amy Lou Hardison for his teacher. Yes, I know. Amy is making a wonderful teacher. She has so much patience with small children. Speaking of memories, Carolyn, do you remember Peggy Paremore? She has broken all records by becoming the first girl ever to be admitted to the Yankees. ” So I heard. They say that in the game against the Dodgers, she knocked the ball clear out of the park, and no one has been able to find it yet. Quite a few of our old gang are in the Dodgers, Carolyn. Charlotte Cherry is their bat girl, and Lester Alligood, Gerald Cameron, Mayhew Shepherd, and Larry Lancaster are on the team. The class of ' 56 was quite talented, wasn ' t it Audrey? Yes, it was. Gretchen O ' Neal is doing very well for herself. She has a successful model¬ ing career in New York. Ann Wells designs all her clothes. And have you read in the papers about Vance Jones! He won the Nobel Prize for his out¬ standing contributions in the field of literature. His works are marvelous. Did you know that Ray Neel and his Hepping Hep Cats now have a permanent job at the Mocambo? Ada Lou Jarvis is their star soloist, and the floor show features those Dancing Dollies, Elizabeth Alligood, Frances Leggett, and Eunice Jackson. Really? Have you heard if any of our boys are still in Ray ' s orchestra? Yes, I believe Corbett Leggett is still with him. Also, Morris McGahey, Ted Bowen, Harold Alligood, and Jimmy Mitchell are in it. Speaking of Morris, did he and Sally ever agree on whether she would have a political career or settle down to a quiet marriage? I think they finally got married. Some of the others who finally took that fatal step into matrimony are Joyce Tyson, Joan Reynolds, Betsy Carney, Peggy Woodard, and Suzzanne Berry. Oh, and Virginia Whitaker has just this month completed her baseball team. Charles Smith is new manager of the Reita theater, and his buddy, Thomas, has the biggest apple orchard in the United States. Rufus is doing well for himself, too, with his Knott Wood Lumber Company. By the way, Audrey, Charles informed me that that picture entitled When You Are In Love is coming to town next week. Oh, that ' s the one starring Clifton Garris and Kathryne Watson, isn’t it? Yes, It ' s based on a novel written by Barbara Hodges. George A. Roberson produced it. We really must see it. And speaking of Hollywood, Betty Lou Whitley is Marilyn Monroe ' s understudy, isn ' t she? Yes, she is. Did you know Boots Cahoon ' s masterpiece is hanging in the Metropolitan Art Gallery in New York? The one of ' Ye Ole High School Building ' ? Yes. It is quite a likeness, isn ' t it? I guess you already know Mac McLean is editor of Newsweek now, Audrey. How about it! Have you seen the latest issue? He ' s giving great publicity to Jerry Harris and Heber in their presidential race. Their life stories are in the latest copy. It ' s going to be a close race. I hardly know which one to vote for. Janice Woolard is doing well for herself in the journalism field, also. She ' s picture editor of Look magazine. In th e January issue she has some pictures of Ann Tayloe, who was recently voted one of the top ten best dressed women in the world. Quite a lot of our old gang entered the business world, Audrey. Barbara Francis, Peggy Ann Cox, and Sylvia Gautier are now managing the Dior Fashion Shop on Fifth Avenue. Betty Rogers, Melva Watford, and Janice Tyson are nurses at Jefferson ' s Memorial Hospital, named for our famous brain surgeon, Bobby Ferrell Jefferson. Yes, and Betty Lou Cole and Peggy Crisp have opened a new restuarant. Their specialty is cole slaw and crisp crackers. I had dinner there the other night and saw a lot of the old gang. Christine Hill is a hostess there. Jerry Ward is Captain of our police force now, and Jimmy Mizelle is President of the Greyhound Buses, Inc. Jeanette Brinson and Peggy Jane Everson have opened the Tiny Tot s Nursey, and John Spruill and John Whitley have written a philosophy entitled A Dog s Life. Abott Morris ' Insurance Company now has a policy insuring false teeth (Bill Tanner is one of his active policy holders,) and Bobby Parker has now replaced Emmet Kelly in Ringling Brothers Circus. And don’t forget Barbara Campbell. She is head of the Campbell Soup Industry, now. In the beauty field, Patsy Imke and Camilla Rodman are contestants in the Miss America Pageant, and Eunice Mills is Buddy Harrell ' s Assistant. Carolyn, have you seen that new TV show in WITN starring Burl Alligood and his wife Mary Lewis called ' Music With Harmony ' ? Yes, and how about John Carter Davis taking over the Pinky Lee show? His side kick is Hilda Magnolia Roberts. By the way, Simple Brooks and Jo Griffin won the Annual Jitterbugging Contest sponsored by Whitford ' s Drug store owned by Howard Cut-Rate Whitford. Mickey Cochran was presented the All American Football Trophy on Marzette Meekins ' s Variety Show last night. I wonder how Charlie Haddock is doing in the Indianapolis 500-mile race. The last I heard he had a 300 yard lead over Tommy Speedy Woolard, Edward Earl Horton has just completed his fabulous trip to Mars. Going with him were those Daring Daredevils, Gary Slade, Hubert Rhem, Doug Stalls, and Jimmy Whichard. I heard that they found the richest uranium deposit ever discovered. It was named for Vickie Cooke, Miss Uranium of the Atomic Age. Milton Fulcher is now principal of a Raleigh High School. Mary S. Moss and Lela Parvin are Glee Club directors. In the political world Ed Mann is now Governor of Texas. Ray Sawyer is an Admiral in the Navy. Serving on his ship are Lester and Bobby Woolard. Pat Shelby, and Shirley Smith are now owners of the Smith, Smith, and Smith Coffee Shop. Jo Roberts has just been voted as Woman of the Year. I think she deserved it, don ' t you, Carolyn?” Yes and how about Brotner Mercer. He is now managing Mercer’s Shoe Hospital. John Wiley has invented a new reducing machine called Wiley ' s Slimmerizer, Guaranteed to make you or break you. Betty I. , Jeanette and Laura I. Miller are missionaries in Siam. They are really doing a fine job I hear. And Audrey, have you heard of that wonderful project that is now underway? Yes, and how about it. I hear that Jimmy Alligood, Eugene Dixon, Jerry Alligood, Glen Bower, and Melvin Edwards are overseeing the construction of a Trans-Atlantic Bridge from New York City to Liverpool, England. It has a small service-center every one-hundred miles, and gas stations in between. Larry Anderson is going to open a Pure Oil Service Station at the half¬ way mark. And Audrey, did you hear about the new Auto repair shop on Main Street? Tommy Buckman is operating it and Emily Wynne is chief advisor. Jeannette McHorney is secretary there. My gracious, look what time it is! I ' ve simply got to hurry home and fix supper. It ' s been fun talking about our old classmates, hasn ' t it Audrey? We must get together again real soon. We shall, real soon. Bye... Bye... ACTION SHOTS TRIBUTE OF APPRECIATION Our janitors, Lula Latham, Charlie Latham, and Willie Ayscue, are loved and admired by all, but perhaps they are best known to the PACKROMAK Staff. Whenever we were in a difficult situation it was one of these who helped us out. They have unlocked doors for us on Saturdays and have kept an eye on us late at night when a deadline was near. They have been a helping hand to us and we really appreciate it. ! ADVERTISEMENTS Hackney Avenue Washington, North Carolina . ' m y __ _ 00 WAYLAND J. SERMONS HARRY McMULLAN, JR. J. E.
