Never before in the history of Mankind has any nation expected so much of its young people as today. The destiny of free America was predicated on the theory of making educa¬ tion available to all. This expectation is being fulfilled today in a vast network of schools and colleges through¬ out the nation. In this network the Washington High School is a vital unit. There has been developed for us the most extensive school system in the world. Today ' s boys and girls are aware of the urgent necessity for ed¬ ucation and are taking every opportunity to improve themselves and prepare to be good citizens of our be¬ loved America. ( 9 , 1044 . Class of ' 53 So short a time ago We started on our way. Days have passed too quickly; Now--graduation day! Together we ' ll go forward. Apart from many ties. But always we ' ll remember This bright phase of our lives. There have been patient ones, Whom now we praise afar Because their daily guidance Has made us what we are. If someday we should meet On byways anywhere, It could never be so sweet As the times we had up here. We salute you as we leave you. Remember us, for we Are a class who love you truly — The class of ' 53. Pauline Alligood, Class Poet ’ftytetonty For twelve years the class of 1953 has been climbing a long ladder. Sometimes we have fallen behind, but somehow, we have managed to climb each step until today we stand on the threshold of our commencement. We started climbing this ladder to education with zeal and anxiety. We didn ' t realize that we were to learn by making mistakes and doing our work over. We have come a long way and have learned to work together as one body--think- ing, living and working as one. The first thing of major interest in our flight came when we left grammar school and entered the seventh grade in the grandold Washington High School. Here we were Junior-High students, and naturally we anticipated becoming Freshmen and being able to change classes as our superiors did. We finally reached this point and felt proud that we had come so far. We soon passed through the tenth grade as Sophomores, feeling a greater desire for an educa¬ tion than we had ever had before. When our Junior year rolled around, we were certain that this was the all-important year. We knew that we had to complete several projects, namely the Junior-Senior Banquet. We went right to work selling magazine subscriptions as a means of raising money for this annual af¬ fair. And we believe that our Junior-Senior was one of the finest ever staged in Washington. It was toward the end of the Junior year that we received our class rings. As seniors, not quite realizing that this was our last year, we entered a new building. It-seemed as if this were our first year rather than our last. Now as we stand at the top of our ladder looking over the good times we ' ve had, we say, it ' s been grand. Goodby W. H. S. Betsy Burgess-Testator Witnesses: Ann Toler Jarvis Latham £44 ' P ' Kl l lecy Crash, Bang, Tinkle, ? Graham, why you I ought to, well, I always knew you would wind up driving like a hot-rod. Did you hear about Joy Harris? She’s a big model up in New York, I think she married Bimbo Latham. He’s a doctor working in a T. B. Sanitorium up there. Tony Abeyounis is Mr. Wortley’s gardener now, and he keeps it nice and trim. Earl Alligood is raising taters, out on his farm. Have you tried them? Real good ! I heard that Mr. J. G. Blount is attorney at law now. He has really stopped a lot of divorces lately. He helped win an important case for T. J. Cox, a local business man last week, with the aid of his efficient secretary, Nina Boyd. Catherine Brown is helping Mrs. Worthy in the library. She just couldn’t leave school. Well, here comes the cop to investigate the wreckage. Why, Bobby Lee Jack- son, I thought you were teaching school, but I suppose teaching drivers is just as much fun. Why, Graham, he ' s writing us a ticket on ' ' Parvin ' s Penny-Weight Paper. Have you heard, he’s a big printer and works on Willy ' s in his spare time. Say, I’ve got to run down to Mercer ' s a minute. I guess Doug will be pounding shoes for a living. Wait Graham, I ' ll walk with you. You told Jack- son to call Wolfe ' s Garage didn ' t you. Yes, they said they would send Max Langley to pick them up. By the way, Tom did you hear about Mollie Hough? She ' s running the new Hough Puff railroad lines. Oh no!, well I never--. Did you hear that ball game yesterday? It was really a thriller. Josh Wallace slammed in two runs for the Yanks. I heard Jarvis Latham announcing the game. You knew he works with Dizzy Deans didn ' t you? Let’s stop in at Garris ' Sweet Slop Shoppe. I want toget a coke. Why there ' s Susie and she ' s buying baby bottles for her little son Mose Leggett. She ' s married to Ashley, you know. Before we leave I want to get some of H. N. Jackson ' s new miracle cream that is guaranteed to keep you from blushing. Graham, I know what we can do this afternoon, we can go to the circus. The Woolard Woolard Shows came to town yesterday. That’s Bill and Grover. One hour later. Why I wish you would look, there is Anna Windley and Feme Highsmith running the side show. Boy, that ' s a honey! There ' s Bobby Rhodes, the Midget up there. Isn ' t he cute. It ' s not often you see a 6 ' 5 midget. Wooha-, what ' s this. The man ' s yelling something about the mighty Sheila. That’s Sheila Carraway up there getting ready to wrestle V. P. Brinson. We’ve just got to stop and watch this. Here comes Paul Credle selling Gordon ' s” Potato Chips, etc. Well it looks as if Sheila got the best of V. P. , so we might as well go on in and find our seats. Oh! here they are up here, Graham. Please pardon us, ladies, but you have our seats. Do what?????-Well my stars! It ' s Pauline Alligood with her class from John Small School. She must be a teacher up there now. Well I guess we ' ll have to sit down here. It ' s time for the show to begin. There’s the fanfare and here comes the parade. There’s Lily Ayers, James Arnold and Zenobia Baker down there in that beautiful blue carriage. They are the Tight Rope Trio.” Can ' t wait to see that act. Those two clowns down there looklike, why it is,—Leslie Beddard and Gilbert Everette. Aren ' t they crazy though? That little car down there, Graham, look at that I wish you would. Linwood Boyd is getting out. Imagine that, what a cat! Well I really did enjoy the circus, Graham, but we had better get going back, we never did get to the Cherry and Berry Dairy. I have to get some milk and butter. You.know Willis Cherry and Herman Berry? They run it together. Oh! yes, the Spinster Club called me this morning while I was at the office. They want $100 to build a new beauty shop. There are a lot of girls that we went to school with in there. There ' s Marjorie Guthrie, Allie Myrtle Brown, Treasure Hodges, Josephine Harris, Margaret and Nancy Jones, Lois Lane, Carol Stubbs and Lucille McRoy. That ' s almost all I can remember now. Oh! no, I forget the head of the Club, Peggy Harrell. She ' s such a grand old soul, so sweet and kind to the young girls who come into their club. They were try¬ ing to get Bo Everette in, but that would be foolish because she ' ll probably be getting married soon. Doggone!, Hardison ' s Men Shop was supposed to send me my suit this after¬ noon but they didn’t. I ' ll have to call Hubert and find out why. Billy Hodges is probably there occupying his time so he can ' t get a thing done. Well, Betty Hoyt is the Manager of Montgomery Ward now, and a very good one too. Virginia Everson is her assistant. Sam Taylor and Charlie Gurganus have opened up the Hot Tip Ford Shop and have been making very good, I think. Did you know that Mary Mizzelle has started a club called Tip Top Shape? Ethel Jackson helps her with it. It’s really a reducing parlor. I saw Betty Lou Hardison and Shirley Evans come out of there looking so fresh--I wonder what kind of treatment they give. I heard Phillip Parrot and Shirley Gurganus say its a fine place. Chester Jackson and Fay Oden have been running the U-Wreck- urn We Fixum out in Wanoca. Melville Russ took his car out to be washed, and they took all the paint off. Milton Rogers, Glen Sheppard and Elton Waters tried to put them out of business by means of propaganda, but you know Fay Mae. Oh! I meant to tell you about the raid at the Blue Flamingo run by Spanky Swain. There were more women than men. There was Bobby Jean Ricks, Betty Lou Stancille, Nancy Hollis, Shirley Swain, Ellen Modlin, Geraldine Taylor, Ellen Swindell, Joyce Waters and Barbara Wells. I can see why. Gene Kelly and Melba Tetterton were dancing that night. Ace Roberts is the new president of the Milwaukee Soda Co. , I hear Cutie Woolard wanted the position but I guess he ' ll have to settle for the Dr. Pepper Plant here at home. Dr. Josh Tayloe stopped by the house the other day. He was in the neighbor¬ hood so he dropped over. I think he was on his way back from Carolyn Hack- ler’s to see little Reuben. Oh! by the way, Tom, I saw Mrs. McAden up the street the other day. You remember Ann Winslow? Well she says that Athy MacKenzie and Betty Burgess are going to be models. They ' re going to model for Ann’s Apparel. That ' s Ann Toler. They have lovely things, I am told. Have you heard of all the engagments and marriages lately? Well, it seems that Monnia Jay Woolard, Edna Earl Roberson, Dot Williams and Mary Eliza¬ beth Winstead are already married, and I hear Joyce Ellington, Audrey Carney and Madgelene Mills are engaged. Won ' t be long now. Did you know that Nancy Lou Duke and Cleveland have a little girl? Darling little Clarky Jane. She ' s so cute. They ' re going to move into the new Lilley ' s Apartments, that ' s Freddie you know. Very beautiful I hear and very modern. Say, I hear that Billy Edwards is writing a book Wit Unabridged. It seems that Ray Davenport, Allen Williams and Jack Horton helped him gather the data for it. I hear that Needham Sullivan, Calis Winstead and Ralph Dail have opened up a race track, they call it The Kenneth Stalls, after Kenneth Stalls, of course. Oh! yes, Lois June Woolard and June Williams are the Bookies for the track. Well, I’ll see you later. Good-bye. Don’t forget. I’ll send you a bill.
