Laura E. Brown Library BY -fA ' - L Pauline M. Worthy __ W ' ) t 4f ] V I sS 7 V PACKROMAK 1952 VOLUME XII BETA CLUB WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL WASHINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA GEORGE H. I AURA E BROWN LIBRARY WASHH north CAROLINA JAettie American schools stand as a bulwark of demo¬ cracy in their devotion to their main task--the de¬ velopment of a free people who think and act with intelligence and consideration for others. Guided through their formative years in the practices of liberty and justice, respected as indi¬ viduals, the young people of our schools have built their own beliefs based on fact and truth so firmly that they are well able to meet the problems of our complex and ever-changing culture with understand¬ ing and confidence. There are few years more crucial in snaping tne course of individual destiny than those which span the golden days of high school. We, the senior class of Washington, feel most fortunate in the wise counsel and patient understanding of a man whose presence has given our golden years a truly golden meaning. In testimony of our gratitude and appreci¬ ation we humbly dedicate this volume of the PACKROMAK to Mr. Joe T. Kornegay, our beloved principal. 867559 MR. EDWIN A. C£aa y Filled with anxiety and enthusiasm the class of 1949 boarded the plane that carried us on a flight of smiles and sunshine, tears and sorrows, headaches and heartaches. At times it seemed that we would never reach our destination but by diligence and persever¬ ance, the aid of our stewardess, hostess and pilot, and our everlasting friendships, our goal was finally achieved. Though it had not dawned upon us that such a thing as airsickness would occur we found that various students had contracted it. The results were amazing. Many had thrown up fusion math, chemistry, Spanish and other unappetizing courses. Everyone, however, managed to pull through without too much difficulty. The first thing that impressed us was the changing of classes which gave us the feeling of growing up. As Sophomores we acquired a greater responsibility than we had anticipated, for we found that our underclassmen, the Freshmen, looked up to us. The important year had now arrived. Immediately we began preparing for the highlight of our Junior year--the Junior-Senior Banquet. One of the ways in which we raised money for the Banquet was our very successful Junior Play. Receiving our class rings was a momentous event of that year. Not quite realizing that we were actually Seniors, we entered our last year as students of dear ole Washington High School . That year brings back memories of our last Junior-Senior Banquet, the Senior Play, the complete priority of the beloved Senior Steps, and finally.graduation. Thus we had reached the last stop in the flight of our wonderful High School career. Historians . . Testators - Joyce Woolard Roy Forbes Witness - Emma Howard dta O %apAe cif Washington, North Carolina November 8, 1976. Dear Frances: We were elated to hear of your escape from behind the Iron Curtain to France. What an adventure you must have had! !! We would still be worrying if John Hoyt hadn ' t received a letter from Dr. Bobby Hackler, surgeon in charge at Lafayette Hospital in Paris, where you are now nursing, telling your whereabouts. I ' ve taken it upon myself to enlighten you on the happenings of your old classmates in the past fifteen years. Did you know that John Hoyt owns the largest department store on this planet. He specializes in dry goods and twenty-five-feet-long hot dawgs . The other day Alyce Adkins, a noted crime photographer for SPIT-BLOOD GAZETTE, went in there and ate one of those hot dawgs wrapped in collard leaves and contracted ptomaine poisoning. Dr. Voltaire Abeyounis, who is now married to the former Mary Hassell, was called in on the case and prevented further misfortune. You remember the glorious season that the W. H. S. Pam-Pack had the year that we graduated. Well, since Coach Jonesy Jones, and Fats Harris have had the Pack, the team hasn ' t lost a game. Two of the boys made All-American: Bobby Alligood, Jr. son of Rev. and Mrs. Robert Jordan Alligood, the Rev. Alligood being known as the second Billy Graham. Mrs. Alligood, you will remember as Barbara Glover; Wendell Dixon, son of Red and Betty Lou Dixon (Red ' s noted for his Sure-Kill Pre¬ vention of Tobacco Worms ). Leading the cheers is Hope Jernigan, the daughter of Marky and June Jernigan, who finally decided that two could live nicely off a lawyer ' s salary. Following her mama ' s example is DeLois Wiley strutting ahead of the rest of the majorettes. I guess that by now you know that I ' m talking about Billy and Joan Harrell Wiley ' s daughter. Wiley is state instructor of safe driving. One of your old friends, Lois Hack Woolard, who has just had the U. S. Mint print her second dollar bill and is freely displaying it at Billy Jefferson ' s Raz-a-Ma-Taz Club for $25. 00 a peek and $50. 00 a good long look. The night life there is running the Diamond Horse Shoe out of business. While I was taking a peek (because I can’t afford the good long look) I accidentally bumped into Sgt. Phillip Parrot, Major Floyd Woolard, Capt. Franklin Waters, all serving in the Service of Uncle Sam; pretty fine job they ' re doing too. Lila Powell, Mildred Cherry, and Joyce Andreoli were also there in the uniforms of Army Nurse Corps, enjoying the dancing of Betty Jean Cowan and Bobby Parker, featured dancers. Music was being rendered by that well-known Moonshine Orchestra, under the direction of David Whitaker and Buddy Hynson. Bye the bye, some of our old schoolmates are members of the faculty along with me at Haven for Girls (Boys ' College just across the street). Among them are Dottee Anderson, instructor of girls’ football team; Molly Carawan, Bible teacher; Martha Hoyt, professor of fusion math (you’ll recall that she was a genius at it in high school); Beth Paul, brain instructor; Shirley Pinkham, Spanish teacher; and Alice Walker, who is teaching Commercial. This is my thirteenth year as instructor of industrial arts. Let me interrupt this letter for a brief second, before Guy Hawkins pushes his elbow through the door-bell. He is here to get the laundry. He and Wayne Martin operate the Get Clean or Quit Laundry, the largest one in town. I ' m sending you a copy of Posey Mercer ' s, and VailKugler ' s latest novel, PABST ' S BLUE RIBBON. Their information was obtained for them by Joy Adams and Buddy Greene. It is rumored that they are busy on the info for a newbook, THE MAGNIFICENT DICE , WORLD’S GREATEST ATHLETE. You will, of course, remember our own Dick Cherry. The biggest news of the month is the manufacturing of the New-Zoom rocket ship, designed and built by Murphy Leggett. Those accompanying him on his first trip to the moon were William Beacham, Paul Boyce, Darrell Griffin, and Charles Sheppard. Each of these have worked on the plan of this rocket for many years. The Met. gave one of its greatest performances when Grace Broome, accompanied by Jayne Winfield, noted pianist, appeared there in August. The gowns for this appearance were created by Peggy Woolard, Mary Ann Rickards, and Ann Jackson. They are famous for their unique designs. A young town has been founded thirty-three miles and seven inches from Washington. The officials of the town are all from Washington. The mayor is Bobby Swindell, and serving on the Board of Aldermen are Larry Woolard, Durwood Jones, Maurice Bridgeman, Tommy Robbins, E. A. Roberson, and Leonard Whitehurst. The Board has just installed touch-a-vision in every home. I’ve got to go turn the radio down, even though it is my favorite program, because I just can ' t concentrate with it blaring away as it is. It ' s Joyce Woolard ' s Advice to the Love-Lorn sponsored by Waters and Trueblood ' s Magnetized False Teeth--guaranteed to stay put. This can be heard weekly over our new station WHELD (We Hold Every Little Dollar), owned and operated by Jacob Sparrow and Billy Whitley. Among those in the class who are happily married are Anne Rayburn, Nellie Mizelle, Alma Woolard, Becky Leggette, Harriet Asby, and Beatrice O ' Neal. Thinking back over their domestic ability, I am sure they are perfect in that role. I knowyou remember H. A. Swindell and I ' m sure that youhave heard some of his records. He is rapidly putting Tennessee Ernie out of business. What do you think of that; I think it ' s swell. He was guest of honor at the dedication of the new Casablanca Theater just completed for Frank Sheppard and Ronnie Fortiscue. Another prominent person there was Edgar Woolard, our new senator, who gave a speech on How to beautify the Pamlico. ” I know that you remember the book, THE SHEIK, well Roy Forbes has put out a new picture taken from the book and it stars Konrad Knake and Joyth Hill. Wow! What a picture. Having made a world-wide name for himself by swimming the English Channel in three hours, fifty-five minutes and two seconds, Gilbert Nelson has returned to Washington to make plans for his wedding to Ruby Bierman. By the way Glenn Mason and Parvin Chauncey are in Africa looking for King Solomon ' s Mines, Their expedition is being financed for them by Nancy Roberts and Billie Harris. It is rumored that they have discovered it, but I don ' t know how true this is. I ' ve heard that Peggy Peele is Ray Taylor Hux ' s private secretary. Ray owns a Whole Fruit Co. , and they also say that Eleanor Oakley has large shares in the company. Gene Mayo, and Carroll Jarvis are production managers for the firm, while Evelyn Jackson and Alene Baker are saleswomen. Have you seen any of the new American fashions? Well guess who are the creators of these creations, None other than Emma Howard, Mamie Walker, and Cathy Cox. They have really made names for themselves in Cocktail Dresses. Last week Washington was captivated by the world ' s largest Mobile Museum. Its exhibits were marvelous. The amazing fact was that Roy Lee Linton, Ray Lilly, Cleveland Duke, and Cecil Bridgeman, are the scientific souls that own this. They have really done some wonderful work. Well Frances, I’ve got to teach a class of Freshmen how to plane a piece of wood. Write and tell me of your experiences behind the Iron Curtain. Your ever talkative friend, Dot Overton Prophets: Frances Walker Dorothy Overton Cla M CLASS OF ' 52 We shall start days anew on a different plane That climbs to our later life. We must take our minds and hearts in reign, And turn not aside from the strife. Our loved comrades we have left today. And the parting bears its mark. But mem Ties shall guide our unknown way Like candles afire in the dark. On our journey ' s road we know we ' ll trod Both paths of joy and sorrow. But with love in our hearts and the shield of our God, We shall conquer that new tomorrow. Class Poet Barbara Glover Cia M $ice,%4 ' TO THE JUNIORS A salute from the Seniors to the class of 53, Whose friendship has warmed our every day. We wish you the best; good cheer and victory. May the light of good fortune fill your way. Caps are raised now to you, our Junior friends. Fill our steps with honor, joy and pride. Then when school days are o ' er, and your new life begins.
