We now have the responsibil- ity of world leadership to help guide the world out of the present fog of hatred and false teachings to peace and brotherhood: Where there is hatred to sow love-where there is despair, hope. To fulfill our mission as world leaders we must have trained men and women to spread our hopes and ideals to the less fortunate countries throughout the world The doors of our schools and colleges are wide open to those who will work and prepare themselves to undertake this task when their opportunity arrives I hope that the boys and girls of Washington High school will take advantage of the educational offer ings and do their share to bring peace to the world and honor not only to their country America but also to their city Two Rivers Q59 MISS SWEETMAN 4, 6614.4 5...- 'Flu-5... This season showed a colorful change in the Senior Band. The members were equipped with new uniforms. These purple and gold suits replaced the aging maroon uniforms. Wearing their new uniforms the WHS Band presented the Christmas, Pop, and Spring Concerts. Besides performing on the concert stage the band also marched at home football games and in the Memorial Day Parade. Drum major Brough Jones and rnaiorette Edith Kuhl led the marching band. Mr. Fred Roemer directs the 97 piece band. The organization's governing body is the Band Council. Bill Braun is president of the i956-57 council. The services the band performs for the community are the result of practice hours in the modern Band Room. Every sixth period Mr. Roemer rehearses his band forthe annual performances. g..,eW, i...L.-L .....- N .:: . vib- .Ii3 Wi li I I Page 27 . .., kt Q H V if ? ff r+ MADRIGAL Seated Halvorsen Jarek Hall Baugmet Swearengen Becker LaFond Wachtel Schnorr Sfandnng Braun Durand Doerfler Messman Mr Roemer Every Monday at 316 T4 students meet with Mr Fred Roemer to partlclpate In the art of maklng beautrful muslc together These young people widely known as the Madrlgal are an Integral part of the Washington Hugh School musuc program The mad people as they are aftectlonately called by Dnrector Roemer are often called upon to sung for varn ous clvlc organrzatlons when space wlll not allow for the entlre chorus At-plays concerts and other specual occasnons at W H S the publuc IS greeted by a bevy of be formaled beautles These gurls are the Junlor Ushers who serve their school by taking tlckets dlstrrbutlng programs and dlrectlng the audnence to thelr seats at these actlvntues 'T' W, 34 J JUNIOR USHERS Seated Conley Muller Stemhauer Haucke Funk Gates Havllnek page 28 Standung Petra Memeke Jarek Pete son Heffernan Jost Schroeder Lahey Baugnlet Ahrndt 4 l ll ll' ' ' ' 'A , , in Ji eh 6 ,' Q f T I ,, Q 44 ev s - , 4 2 1' -Sy tif Q' I' 3. ? AIl the news for all the students is the motto ofthe school tri-weekly publication, the Neshotah News. The '56-'57 staff was born at the lnkslingers' Ball on January 26, 1956. At that time, the head- dresses were officially awarded to Chief Brenda Halvorsen and her associate editor, Judy Becker. Then followed the page editors: Barbara Brigham, girls' sports: John Koprowski, boys' sports, Judy Hall, feature editor: Fritz Kahlenberg, editorial editor: and Jerry Sauve, news editor. Jim Hallett served as news editor during the second semester of publication. Thus began the reign of the staff over their new domains, consisting of the staff room, adviser Mary Dunne's room, and the print shop where the paper was actually turned out, under the guidance of Mr. Ewald Schmeichel. The year's climax was reached when the News was twice presented with the coveted NSPA CNational Scholastic Press Associationl First Class Rating. Delivering messages, an- swering the telephone, and posting attendance are but a few of the tasks she performs in an hour's work. With such help, the office can cope with any problem that arises. Headed by President Marian Biel, the library assistants perform their daily tasks of checking out books, writing our overdue notices, and keeping the library functioning smoothly.
