Neem Bolstered by nine returning lettermen, Coach Floyd Dietzo laid his plans for the 1954 grid season, with the help of able assistants, Ierry Robien and Warren Otto. Forty-seven eager candidates reported for the first practice, only weeks away from the opening battle with Manitowoc. Football isn't football at WI-IS, or at any school, unless injuries occur, and on the night of Septem- ber l7, 1954, three talented lettermen, Paul Koch, lerry Wojta, and Torn Steltz watched the inter- city classic from the bleachers. TWO RIVERS 7, MANITOWOC 7 CAwayJ. The Raiders learned early in the season that statistics don't win ball games. Outplaying the Fox Valley entry, Dietzo's Purple Griddersn had to settle for a tie. Bill Kreisa's 7-yard blast, with Benzinger's conversion, scored for the Raiders. TWO RIVERS 6, KIMBERLY 19 CI-Iomel. The Dutchrnen were too big and tough for the Cool City boys, as the Raiders lost the conference opener. A TD pass from Benzinger to Gfospodarek accounted for the Raider's lone tally. TWO RIVERS 12, CLINTONVILLE 6 CI-Iomel. Sparked by Benzinger's passing and running, the Raiders whacked the Truckers in the mud and rain. Kummerow and Benzinger ran for TD's. TWO RIVERS 31, NEW LONDON 6 CI-lomel. Kreisa's two TD's led the scoring, with Ruthmans- dorfer, Wojta, and Thiede each crossing pay dirt for a homecoming victory over the Bulldogs. Page 18 TWO RIVERS O, KAUKAUNA 6 CAwayl. Sta- tistics champs once again, but not in the score. Six inches of mud got the best of the boys at crucial times. Despite weather conditions, Ben- zinger passed for 150 yards. TWO RIVERS 6, MENASHA 2 CI-Iomel. Playing the finest brand of ball they knew how, fourteen seniors played their final home game in the annual Parents' Night game. Benzinger's TD pass to Gospodarek was the winning marker. TWO RIVERS 13, NEENAI-I 27 Cltwayl. The first half saw Two Rivers ahead of the league champs, but depth and power caught up with the Raiders in the final 24 minutes. Melanson's 75-yard TD pass interception highlighted the day's affair. Kreisa took a pass from Benzinger for the other score. TWO RIVERS 19, SHAWANO O CAwayl. The Indians and the snow weren't enough to defeat the Raiders in the season finale as Benzinger's trigger arm hit Kreisa and Cfospodarek for TD's. Behrendt scampered 20 yards for the Raiders' last TD. For the second straight year, the Raiders placed in the first division of the Mid-Eastern Conference. When conference honors were passed out, Quar- terback Tom Benzinger, End Tom Gospodarek, and Guard Bob Zellner placed on the All-Conference Team. Twenty-two boys received letters at the season's end, with eight returning next year to form the nucleus of the 1956 Purple Raider team. Coach Warren Ctto's Tunior Varsity, showing exceptional ability and well-balanced teamwork, came through with one of the best records in re- cent years with a l4-5 season record. The boys handed Shawano their only defeat of the season, posted a double victory against Manitowoc, and defeated both Neenah and Kimberly, strong con- tenders in the Mid-Eastern Conference. Washington High School had a good year in freshman basketball this year, tying for first place in its league games. Coach Bjarne Wrolstad believes that this freshman sguad had at least a dozen good candidates for the var- sity. Well-balanced scor- ing and rebounding, plus a fine coaching job by Mr. Wrolstad, re- sulted in a highly suc- cessful season for the freshmen. Meeting every sixth period in the band room ot the new wing of our school, the Senior Band, under the baton of Mr. Fred Roemer, worked diligently to perfect their selections tor the Christmas Concert, Pop Concert, Spring Concert, Memorial Day Parade, and the annual Band Festival which was held at Neenah this year. The Band Mothers organization sponsored the sending ot several band members for a three- week stay at the Music Clinic in Madison during the month ot luly. At the conclusion of the Clinic, the students played with the Music Clinic Summer Band and presented an outdoor concert on the University ot Wisconsin campus. This year's Band Council was led by Tom Ben- zinger, who was elected president by the band mem- bers, with Rene Emond serving as secretary. Twenty-six members ot the Senior Band were chosen this year to play in the Pep Band. This group performs during pep assemblies and at basket- ball games where it would be ditticult facilitating the 92 members ot the Senior Band. Peter Schmitt served as student director tor this group. Highlight ot the year was the appearance of the University ot Wisconsin Band which was sponsored by the high school band. After presenting an out- standing concert to an appreciative audience, the University students were housed and entertained in Two Rivers. Mary Ellen Kronzer served as chair- man tor this event.
