:QM Lmidfwiicw M Zhe Zwgfifrenecf L B Clarke Principal of Washlngton High School September 1912 June 1953 Dear Mr Clarke We the graduating class of 1953 feel that it is a great privilege to be able to dedicate our yearbook to you at this last Farewell Assembly in which you and we shall be participants Graduating with you so to speak is an honor and a distinction that we prize and shall remember always whenever we reminlsce about our days at Washington High School On lune 6 1938 the High School Alumni Association and the Two Rivers Teachers Association hon ored you with a testimonial dinner celebrating your twenty five year connection with education in Two Rivers We learned from newspaper clippings of that event that you came here in the fall of 1912 to teach Latin and English and then became principal of the H P Hamilton School in 1917 The only interruption that occurred was when you served in the American Expeditionary Forces in France and with the Army of Cccupation in Germany from 1918 to 1920 When you returned to Two Rivers in 1920 you resumed duties as principal of the Hamilton School school you became the first principal of Washington High School Thus you have served Two Rivers as the first principal of two high schools for thirty five years Truly to call you Mr Washington High School is no idle catch phrase but a term of deep affection and respect Being a principal is not an easy task we know but your personal qualities of sympathetic awareness of student interests and problems your scholarship and your great administrative ability which is shown especially in your efficiency and attention to detail all underscored by an evenness of mind clear thinking and modest simplicity have made you our ideal principal Because we along with the hundreds of former students and the present ones believe that our fine and constantly improved high school is due in a great part to you we have chosen a quotation from Emerson to sum up your relationship to Washington High School An institution is the lengthened shadow of one man We won t say goodbye Mr Clarke we ll 1ust say so long for we know that your pride and influ ence in this school will still be felt in the years to come May the future hold everything good for you Cordially and respectfully yours Page 2 The Class of 1953 ln 1922 when Washington High School was completed and the Hamilton School discontinued asa high
