Those harmonious strains you hear during the sixth period belong to the Senior Band, under the capable direction of Mr. Fred Poemer. This organization's chief function is that of becom- ing familiar with good music. The band consists of eighty-two members of the ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades. Of these, twenty-eight are members of the Pep Band, which plays for all home basketball games and pep assemblies. The band has an elected council, that organizes committees for the group. Heading this year's council was the president, Wayne Cornils. This musical group entertains you at the Christmas Concert, Pop Concert, Spring Concert, Memorial Day parade, and school assemblies. The band also plays and maneuvers during the half of our home football games. The main event of the year was the Festival, held on April 25, in Menasha. During the summer the Band Mothers send four members of the Band to the Music Clinic, at the University of Wisconsin, in Madison. This year the Band had the honor of having lim Kowalslcy play in the All-State Orchestra at Milwaukee. Blending their voices during the third period is enjoyment for the W.l'l.S. Mixed Chorus. They sing everything from classical to semi-popular music. The eighty members of the Chorus are under the supervision of Mr. Roemer. They are selected from the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades through tryouts held the pre- ceding spring. Like the Band, the Chorus also has an elected councilg the president is Dale Durocher. Page 20 The hard work of the Chorus was exhibited when it presented The Mikado, an operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan. Other undertakings of this music association are participation in the Christmas, Pop, and Spring Concerts. Lilt of the Latin was the theme of the Pop Concert this year. They also go caroling to the other schools in town at Christmas time. The third period caroling on the day before Christmas vacation is a tradition in W.H.S., as all class room doors are opened to hear the strains of Silent Night or x'Come All Ye Faithful. A high rating was won at the Vocal Festival, held in Appleton, on March 21. Sandra Kitzerow and loan Vertz were accompanists for this group. Fifteen members of the chorus meet once a weelc after school as the Madrigal Group. These people learn some of the literature of the madrigal period and perform in place of the Chorus when physical facilities do not accommodate a larger group. Especially popular at the Christmas season on both school and community club programs are these singers. The Boys' Glee Club includes thirtyAtwo singers chosen from the ninth through the twelfth grades. Mr. Fred Roemer directs this group, which meets during the second period on Fridays. Accompanied by William Laurent, this glee club sings for the Christmas Assembly and the Spring Concert. Miss Patricia Reilly directs the Girls' Glee Club, which meets on Mondays and Thursdays during the sixth period. Fifty-five girls make up this group, which participates in the Christmas Program, Pop Concert, Vocal Festival, Assembly programs, and Spring Concert. This organization, which meets bi-weekly, is under the direction of Miss Dorothy Sukanen. During the year the club presented two one-act plays tor the assembly and the three-act play-l'Seventeenth Summer -the very popular teen-age drama by Maureen Daly. Dramatic technigues, including voice projections, diction, characterizations, interpretations, posture and carriage, as well as principles ot staging, make-up, and costuming, are learned by participation in plays, skits, and pantomimes. The Make'Up Club, originally a part ot the Dramatic Club, is now on its own. lt was started by Miss Emily Volk, the adviser. Club members have worked very hard this year on making up characters in the l'Mikado, a minstrel show, Seventeenth Summer, and a one-act play. lanet Konop was president, Dorothy Shavlik, secretary, Nancy Pok, vice-president, Gail Kappelman, custodian, and LeRoy Wilson, clean up chairman. Editors im- mediately fell into the routine of making lay- outs. All kept a hopeful ear and eye open for latest news and big scoops to inform approx- imately SGO readers of recent developments. The third week of work on the paper saw the editors at the print shop, fixing l'dummies, and assisting always-present print shop boys with setting up pages and headlines, with Mr. Ewald Schmeichel ably watching and advising in matters of Hlinotypingf' and Uspacingf' Finally on Thursday night, the presses would roll, and the paper would be completed, waiting to be distributed by the circulation staff. For the Senior 'iNeshotah staff, highlighting the year's work was the presentation of twenty- three pins to the outstanding members. Mr. lnkslingerf' the little nose-for-news-man, was introduced this year at the annual Hlnk- slinger's Ball. At this dance old members said goodbye as they handed their duties over to the newly announced staff of luniors. Although working on the paper demands much hard work, all former staff members agreed it was an exciting, happy experience to be a part of Washington l-ligh's own paper, the Neshotah News. Mr. Orris Boettcher coached the layvees the first semester, and when he left for Chippewa Falls, Mr. Louis Posny took over the reins. The team started slow, but when the Mid-Eastern layvee loop had ended, the S. E team was perched up in third place behind Menasha and eeiia . The highlight of the season was the victory over the Neenah Rockets by a 40-36 count. The Neenah loss knocked the Rockets out of the top position, and they never regained the lead. Leading the scoring parade were Danny Koch and Paul Koch. Coach Biarne Wrolstad guided his Freshman basketball squad to a third place tie in the Round-Robin League with a 4-6 record. Getting off to a slow start, the Frosh ended the first half of play with one victory and four losses. Wrolstad's boys picked up steam in the final round of games and won three, while dropping two. This year's team was, in general, a big team. A few of the boys stood almost six feet, and with a little more experience, the '52-'53 Frosh cagers could turn out to be top-notch performers. l'Duz Duval, with a nine point per game average and 90 points for the season, was the chief point maker. He was followed by limmy Malkowski with 69, and Tom Steltz with 34.
