Dunne-we dedicate this 'iFriendship'i annual. Coming to Washington l-ligh School in 1928, she taught seventh and eighth grade En lish. ln the fall ol T947 when our Senior Class were Fsieshmen, she began to instruct Juniors in English, and also to advise the 'Neshotah News stati. As adviser Miss Dunne has more than capably guided our sister publication. During the time she has been ad- viser to the 'Neshotah News, it has always had top ranlaing and has gained many awards. The job of producing a paper every two weelcs, train- ing new stai'ls each year, coordinating worlc in school and at the printing shop, acting as organization adviser to this publication, and teaching over 'IOO Juniors, demand al- most 'round the cloclc work. All of these duties Miss Dunne handles very well. She lives according to the formula which she gives to every new stall: Accuracy and Efficiency. We, the Staii ol this 1951 NESHOTAH, realize the painstalcing care and plain hard worlc which go into a publication such as the school newspaper, and realize, too, the great importance of a competent, conscientious adviser. Many times in the course ol staff worlc it becomes neces- sary to have just a small pep talk to set things running smoothly again. ln this capacity Miss Dunne has done just that, keeping, as the saying goes, the presses rollin Attending first the College oi St. Catherine, Niiss Dunne continued at Columbia University, where she re- ceived an M.A. de ree. Also she has attended Oxford and the University 0? Freibourg in Switzerland. An avid traveler, she has visited the Orient, and during the summer ol 1950 she toured in many countries of Europe. We are proud to dedicate this boolc to our capable, understanding, cosmopolitan friend, Miss Dunne. We fbecfacale 04421. 1951 44iencf4f1-llf1. Miss Dunne vvorlcs with her capable stali. lt is wonderful to have true friendsl You have had many opportunities in Washington l-ligh School to meet students and members of the faculty who will mean much to you in the years ahead. They are friends who cost you nothing and who will prove most dear to you. You may have discovered that it is the giving of the heart from both sides that makes friendship, and.I am sure that most of you have learned to give of yourself in forming the bonds of true friendship. It is as important to be a friend as it is to have a friend, and our school, our community, and our America are rich in opportunities for people to find others of like tastes and interests to share joys and sorrows, You have proved to be a friendly group of young men and women. We hope that your hi h school experiences have helped you to know and appreciate ttlie fine qualities that exist in those around you. You know that no one race, creed or color has a monopoly on those human characteristics which lead to a successful, cooperative and friendly world. lt is m hope that you may continue to remember your friends of your high school days, and -that y may acquire many new and trusted friendships in the years t ahead. WN George M. O'Brien wigs lt The theme of our yearbook for 1951-Friendship-is an ab- straction, but how real friends and friendships are! l have often urged students to count friendships among their most highly valued possessions. Your schooldays are a series of ups and downs, suc- cesses and failures, hopes and disappointments, wins and losses. You value your achievements, as you should but from day to day you are living in close touch with your fellow students and your teach- ers, you are with your own age group more than you will ever be again, and you find that your friends contribute your most satisfying moments. ln the years to come, after many of your experiences have become dim in your memory, you will treasure the friendships that meant so much to you. The wise student, throughout his years in school, in the class room, in extra-curricular activities, will cultivate the good will and the respect-and thus the friendship-of his teachers and fellow stu- dents just as later on he will cultivate his neighbors, his associates in work, and others with whom he may have vital contacts in church or civic activities. l hope that you will leave Washington l-ligh with your share of friendships, and that these experiences will lead to others in later lite that you will prize as highly. l.. Page 64 To the question, Just how do you o about making an annual? the hard-working staff members wea smiled and answered, Just watch us. The onlooker might have been confused by the special vocabulary u by the workers- blackouts, layouts, bleedoffs, composite pictures, just to mention a few. Edit Bette Konop, Jeanne Beduhn, and Bob Goedjen, learned that editorships are definitely not solely honoi positions as they assisted in every phase of preparation-from theme selection to the final check. Those business-like looking boys with a camera, Bob Halverson and Bill Zoerb, were either on their x to take a picture or enroute to another session in the dark room, where Mr. Kromer was on hand to help. Ut graduation this year, both Bob and Bill will leave positions hard to fill because of the high calibre of their phc graphic work and splendid cooperation on this and past annuals. Jane Becker and Dale En elbrecht learned to read a ruler right down to the last thirty-second of an i as they worked with exact mafhematical proportions in the blackouts, which indicated picture placement on pages, l-lot in pursuit of a few elusive seniors, Carole Knope and Mary Ann Fencpl were gathering activity shi for the senior section. During free periods Janet Knope, lvy Scott, and Janice Malkowski labored in the phy room, pasting individual pictures of each student in W.H.S. ln the meantime Nancy Rahn sketched cover desi! while Kay Hoffman made the original drawings which appear in this book. Rodney Kershek and Mickey Kr forst saw that both boys' and girls' sports were covered by their respective committees. Charlotte Parmei was responsible for the large activities section. These able workers are just a samplin of the many people who aided the editors and advisers in prepai the book. Many thanks to the teachers who aided in checking, to Mr. O'Brien and Mr. Clarke for their c tributions, and to those students who supplied snapshots for the composite pictures. Now the book is yours-the 1951 Friendship edition of the Neshotah annual. In these pages the s members have tried to capture that spirit of friendliness that typifies W.H.S. in the classes, activities, sports, everything else in which students and faculty work together.
