After three years ot hard work the seniors begin tying the loose ends and putting the finishing touches to their courses. Those of a commercial bent breeze through ottice practice, stenography, and typ- ing, aviation-minded boys have a diet ot pre- tlight, physics, advanced mathematics, and machine shop, while those intending to go to college busy themselves with English, prob- lems in democracy, or geometry, others pre- ferred the musical atmosphere ot band and chorus or bent their talents to the art and draft- ing classes. All took physical education and struggled through the usual drills and com- mando training. You can always tell a senior by that desperate, last-semester look. That semester is really a busy one: class play, the annual, commence- ment practice, Elk's Constitution Contest, job hunting or getting those deferments. Besides all this there is the heavy social calendar: Senior Farewell, Commencement Dance and Senior Banguvt. Yes, the seniors are a busy group, but they love every minute ot being busy. Next year they will not be backg and although graduation is really the commencement ot a new lite, they will miss the work, fun, and traditions that are Washington High School. ,X f, . f V 2 -' 4, . English 8eRags and riches are found in The Beggar and the King. Social Science 8vThese students are learning what their privileges are as future voters. The aspiring seventh and eighth graders are to be envied by those who will enter Wash- ington High as freshmen. These seventh and eighth graders will be able to cope with the spacious halls and immense number of teachers and rooms because they have already had experi' ence along that line. That ever-present subject, English, occupies part of their time along with social science and arithmetic. Physical education takes up two periods a week. Home economics for the girls and manual arts for the boys prove to be interesting training. For the musicians at heart there is the lunior band, and budding painters and sculptors can express themselves in art class, A mighty fine addition to the classes of 1950 and 1951 are the high school's youngest mem- bers. The staff strives not only to cover class- work and extracurricular activities in school, but also to collect snapshots of informal out-of-school groups, so that the yearbook may be a reccrd ot a full year. Editing and publishing an annual means a variety of jobs tor willing students under the guidance of Miss Helen Wing. Many of the jobs to be completed before the standard of perfection is reached include: writing copy, planning the dummy, pasting blackouts, taking pictures, and producing a skit. All of the pictures in the book, with the exception of the senior and classes sections, are taken, developed, and printed in the high school by Mr. Earl Krorner and his student photographers. lt is unusual for a school yearbook to have this much of itsl own photography. But these are not all the classes otfer, for Miss Delores Engstrom leads the girls through an active commando course, a swimming class, and a variety ot ccrnpetitive sports. There is fun tor everyone in tast-paced basket- ball, volleyball, baseball, tennis, and hockey games. Along with these more familiar sports come the newer additions: badminton, tumbling, archery, and modern dance, as well as prac- tice in correct posture. ln pool classes the girls are working tor Red Cross certificates, perfecting dives, increasing their endurance for long distance swimming, and learning lite- saving. Besides promoting health, the diverse activities and the movies make this an interest- ing class. Keep the volleyball in the air leanne I The birdie is in the air.
