Editx Cumming, Helen Gardner, Ned Slocum N I NPHUUK A recent graduate of Eton and Oxford says that many students reach their peak in school and then fizzle outg that many who gained no distinction in school out- strip their fellows in the long run of life. But I have enough faith in the de- mocracy of the public school to believe that this is not the case in America, not the ca a in Two Rivers. My observation during a quarter-century tells me that, if your effort places you in the upper half of your class-mates, you have a far better chance to hold the same rank among your fellow-citizens than one who was near the bottom and has to rise to the top. I hope you, of the Class of '59, will accept this challenge. Develop your powers -- all of them -- to the utmost in school. Then stick to it. Don't peter out . 05743. B.A.gM.A. Northwestern Univ., Univ. of Wis. Principal of High School Seniors --- 1 share with you your interest in this exceptionally fine presentation of your extra-curricular program. Many of the practical phases of the present academic school offering, such as music, art, dramatics, home economics, ma- nual arts, physical education, etc., found their way into the regular school curricu- lum through the avenue of extra-curricular activities. You've plunged whole heartedly into all of the school activities. If you keep on going as you have, there is no doubt that you will be one of the best classes that this school has ever seen. Junior swim ers who helped the swimming team to victory this year are: Richard Thomas, John Sketch, George Kanzelber- ger, Jack Halberg, Howard Engelbrecht, William Grover, Edward Levy, and George Casavant. Those juniors who have helped this year's team to a successful climax are: Jack Anderberg, Eugene Kopetsky, Frederick Glandt, Anthony Kostka, and Robert Timm. Not content with athletic attainments alone the juniors excell in debate, declamation, and oratory. The junior class also spon- sored the annual May Ball, using romantic Hawaii as its theme. This is the only evening party that ends at twelve, and amid Hawaiian atmosphere it proved a grand success. With all the good athletes, debaters, orators, and students in this year's junior class, you juniors should make one of the best senior classes that this high school has produced. Will you? BAND Our high school band was organized under the direction of Mr. Lorenz Lueck in 1921. In the spring of 1922, the band gave its first annual concert. The following year Mr. Lueck assumed directorship of our local Hamilton Band, and Mr. Arvold was called in from Rudsburg. Mr. Arvold has been largely responsible for starting the school band tournament. Due to this leadership, Mr. Arvold is called 'The Father of the Wisconsin School Band Movement. Mr. Arvold assumed director- ship of our band for two years and was then succeeded by Mr. Van Duesen who also stayed two years. The present director, Mr. William B. Jones, has been director for the past twelve years. The first band boasted of fifteen members, now the band has seventy-five members. Our school band is a class 'A' band and it has always been quite successful at the band tournaments. This year's required piece for the band tournament was Phedre by Massenet. The main numbers that were practiced on during the year are: Invitation to the Waltz by Weber, Memories of Stephen Foster arranged by Guzman, Andante from the Surprlse S hon by Haydn, Ballet Egyptian by Luigini, Lg Ferea .5-FL8COm6, Semiramlde by Rossini, and Phedre by Massenet. The band practices daily during the seventh period. There has been much emphasis put on the sight reading of new pieces. Mr. Jones states that every year the band has been able to play more difficult types of pieces with greater ease, and that this year's band has been no exception. Every year since the band has been organized, an annual concert has been held during the latter part of the school year when the band is at its best. At this concert the numbers that will be used for the band tournament are played. This year's concert was given in April of this year. Row 4. Jones, the Washington High School Mixed Chorus has completed its tenth successful year. Through- out the year the chorus has given several concerts at the J.E. Hamil- ton Community House in addition tosinging numbers at the dedication of the redecorated auditorium of the Washington High School. The group is composed of seventy-two members who meet daily during the third period and study vocal selections of wide variety. In the chorus are twenty- eight seniors, twenty-two juniors, and twenty-two sophomores. Of these students thirty are boys and forty-two are girls. At Christmastime the chorus gave a concert at each of the graded schools in the city. During the spring the group spent many hours in preparing numbers for the annual District Tournament which was held at Sheboygan on May thirteenth. Some of the numbers were: The Lost Chord, Glorious For- ever, All in the April Evening, Finlandia, Lost in the Night, A Mighty Fortress, and two Russian Folk Songs titled sneaks Razin and Halelug. Many students were busy at this time also preparing solos for the local elimination contest prior to the District Festival for vocal and instrumental solos which was held here on April 29. The Chorus completed its year qrsinging at the commencement exer- cises. Row 4. fries, Jebavy, Rudie, Ney, H.Kasten, Smith, Klatt, Liddle, Schacherl, La Bine, Zander, Johnson, J. Gunderson. Row 5. DEBATE The Two Rivers Washington High School debate teams have competed in about sixty-one debates throughout this school year. Forty of these sixty-one were practice debates, sixteen were decision debates, and five were debates before local Lions', Elks', Rotarians', and Women's Club organizations. In the North-Eastern Conference tournament Two Rivers was in com- petition with twelve different schools. In this tournament, Two Rivers and Shawano were the only two schools out of the twelve that limited their debaters to freshmen and sophomores. In this tournament Two Ri- vers placed third along with Shawano by using freshmen and sophomores against seniors of other schools. In the Wisconsin High School Forensic Association sixteen schools competed with one another. Two Rivers missed placing first in this tournament by the loss of one debate and the team was eliminated from further competition having won five out of six debates. In the National Forensic League tournament, our debate teams com- peted with ten schools and won six debates out of ten. Only three schools out of the ten won more debates than the Two Rivers teams did. The competition this year according to Mr. Sherman Gunderson, the debate coach, was quite a bit stiffer than in previous years. He re- marked that the teams this year debated some of the best teams in Wis- consin, and were to be congratulated on their fine debate work and co- operation. The fact that over sixty debates comprised this year'sdebate work proves there is a lot of good hard work connected with this activity. Congratulations to a mighty fine organization of ambitious stu- dents! Row 3. Wood, Bouda, Dallmann, Gallenberger,Gregor, Dworek, Bensman, Savard Row 2. Tomek, Schultz, Feuerstein,Rol1ins, Kanugh, Henfer, Ahrndt, Jacqmln NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Because election to the National Honor Society ls the highest honor attainable by a student during his entire high school career most sen- iors strive to attain an average which will place them in the upper third of the graduating class. From these scholastically superior stu- dents a group equal to fifteen per cent of the entire graduating class, which is twenty-four this year, is elected on the basis dfcharacter, in and outside of class, leadership hlschool activities, and service tothe school. A committee of twelve teachers ranks a student on these quali- ties. By this method the ranking made by the twelve teachers is pro- bably as fair a one as it is possible to obtain. According to Francis Bacon, prominent English essayist and judge of character, 'Honor has three things in it: the vantage ground todo goodg the approach to kings and principal persons, and the raising of a man's own future. If honor will do this to these students, then their striv- ings will not have been in vain. Realizing that only a small percentage of the students can make Na- tional Honor, many worthy students' names must be omitted. Neverthe- less, these students still constitute a necessary supporting boulevard to make this year's senior class of one hundred and fifty-nine members outstanding in leadership, scholarship, character, and service. THE PLAY CLASS It has been only in tae lest two years that the Dramatic Club has been changed into a class. The class has done some very good work and has been very active, as a result, the members entered a play, 'Auf Viedersehn,n in the District Contest and received third place. The other two plays were 'Dust of the Roadn and 'Willie's First Dress Suit.' For the first time in the history of the club, a stock company was formed and called, 'Curtain Time Players.n Each member has a share in it, and the officers in charge are: President, Edith Buegeg Vice. Pres., George Kriehng Secretary, Robert Laurentgand Treasurer, Ruth Wolfe. The Board of Directors consists of Vivien Sattler, Pearl Lesperance, and Marvin Jebavy. Something entirely different from what they've ever done before has been done this year. Much to their enjoyment, they have present- ed two plays in which the boys' and girls' parts were acted by the opposite sexes, NDress Reversal' and WCome Out of It.' 'The Hoosier Schoolmastern was given in May with the entire cast chosen from the Dramatic Class. It was a three-act play and is unique in the fact that it is the first play that has ever in- cluded all of the members. Row 5. Lesperance, Savard, Bouda, Laurent, Jourdain. How 2. The general purpose of the society is to better the conditions of school life in our school by serving the students, faculty, and various organizations. The Purple and Gold sponsors the Senior Fare- well,a dance given as a farewell to the graduating class, checKs coats at swimming meets, carries on a locker campaign to induce students to lock their lockers, puts on a safety campaign for bicycle riders, ushers at all basketball tournaments, speech contests, and Parents' Night, and does many other helpful things. Students are elected into the Purple and Gold Society at the regular school election. The qualifications necessary to be elected into the society are the same as the qualifications of the class officers. The society meets every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month at 3:50 o'clock. The students of Washington High owe a vote of thanks to the Purple and Gold Society and to Miss Sweetman, their adviser, for all the successful undertakings they have accomplished this year and also the gifts of a piano cover and a high school plaque. CIVIC SERVICE SOCIETY One of the outstanding organizations of the Washington High School of which we have cause to be proud is the Civic Service Society. This group of fifty-five Problems in Democracy students, under the guidance of Mr. Robert D. Winn, meet every other Monday for the express purpose of serving the school. The aim of this organization is to give its members experience and guidance in getting things done by themselves. This aim will make better citi7ens of the students participating in the work of this organization. This year, as other years, the Society has accomplished its share of ser- vice to the school. The traffic problem on the stairs and in the halls has been well taken care of by the cooperation of this year's members with last year's. It was through the persistent efforts of the Civic Service Society that the class room doors are being opened to the inside, eliminating injury to students. From these three examples of service, it can be readily seen that the Civic Service Society is very much interested in promoting safety in all phases of school life. An additional service rendered by the organization was the purchasing of usher bands for all students who serve as ushers at all school activities to which the public is invited. J - The Citizenship Day organization, which is urging young people of voting age in Manitowoc county to vote, and training them to do so intel1igently,is indebt- ed to the Civic Service Society for their cooperation in securing the names of eligible persons. From the above accomplishments, we plainly see that the Civic Service Soci- ety and its adviser, Mr. Robert D.Winn, should be warmly congratulated for their many services to Washington High School and to the Community of Two Rivers. , . 5 xanga 'ff' 411 5 ' + M 1 y is ,Hee Quo. is . ,,, JM K r ,M i' for-XX My f Row 2. JUNIOR HIGH CRIER It is now four years since Thomas Napiecinski had the remark- able idea of having a junior high paper. The paper in its first year of existence was published by the seventh grade only, but in the following year the freshman class became enthusiastic over the creation and asked whether they could give their assistance. The addition of the freshman to the staff makes the paper of junior high scope. The paper consists of poetry, Girl Scout news, feature writ- ings, interviews, illustrations, and stories, in short, it can be considered as the reflector of every activity that takes place in school. The staff is, and in the past years has been of a cooper- ative nature. This cooperation of the students has helped to pro- mote the success of the paper. The Junior High Crier tries its utmost to appeal to every person's interest, it is of a democratic nature allowing all the boys and girls of the staff and also outside the class to exercise their talents. Under the guiding hand of Miss Dunne, the paper has steadily improved and expanded. Y in 4 o W J 4 x we s-- --S a. f3eC.3Q'i?E3.,Q.E.Qa.ea.e Row 5. Coach Hall, K. Jacoboski, K. Wondrash, D.
