(Below left) Assistant principal Or. James Cohen. 3«Sfi B This has been a year of out with the old and in with the new. The new school policies of this year have touched the lives of every WHS student. The days of skipping, taking those extra few minutes between classes, and writ- ing your own notes are gone forever. Today we have undercover police men, stricter tardy rules, and parental phone calls. Like all new things, this has taken time for us to get used to, but we survived. When this school year ends the underclass- men know they have another year ahead. As graduation approaches, the seniors aren ' t sure what lies ahead, but in their minds they know that for every ending there is a new beginning. ' . «. ■ ■■- 1EH 3 Memory Lan« Panthers Uncaged Panthers have a very unique personal- ity. They have their own way of living. Their moods, actions, expressions, and ways of doing things are just as individual and natural as they are. The Panthers shown here on these pages are: Trina Ryder, Dave Ullery, Randy Chrzan, Shel- ley Tuttle, Barb Anastos, Beth Spy- chalski, and Dave Whitesel. Each one of them is letting their own creative and distinctive feelings show through. 6 Student Life Student Life 7 s c h o o 1 D a y s A r c H e r c A 9 a 1 n 8 Student Life Carl Meert is a bit bewildered about why his summer passed so quickly. Beth Yanko is happy to be back playing in the band. What ' s the matter Paula Greskowiak? Bad news? Reading is not one of Chris Ross ' favorite pass- times. Stephanie Crayton is distracted long enough from her class to have her picture taken. Senior Greg Gray reflects upon his years at Washington High School. Jeanne Sayer trying to look studious. It was that time of the year again. The time when students began rel- ishing every last minute of sleeping in and comb- ing the shopping malls for school supplies and clothes. Yet another sum- mer was behind us, and we were about to embark on a new school adven- ture. As in past years we would once again be en- joying sporting events, dances, and other activi- ties. But the new school year also brought about new faces and new poli- cies. One thing that didn ' t change was each student ' s determination to make this school the best it could possibly be. Student Life 9 Linda King and Loretta Lindholm are deep in thought over an assignment. George Washington seems to have captured the affections of Joanne Sayer and Michelle Szulcyk. Korrine Klota and Veronica Royce exchange phone numbers. Friendship is like an antique glass, the longer it sits, the more fragile it gets. And if you take to much advan- tage of it, or mistreat it, it will burst into a million tiny pieces that can never be replaced. Anonymous 10 Student Life Barb Anastos and Wendy Vanslager talk enthusiastic ly aboul their weekend plans. John Szalewski, Sharyl Kubsiak, and Margaret Archambault enjoy spending their lunch hours at Hardee ' s. Panther Expressions (Above far right) Chris Vanderheyden loves to let the kid in her show. (Right) Beth Sheridan appears to be amused by the class discussion. 12 Student Life Leah Shetler gets a hand out of nowhere. £ o u (X X On H Stephanie Makowski John Kuezmanski Michelle Szulcyk Mike Suth Sharon Demski Tim Micheal The date was set: May 18, 1984. Their summer re- cord was 28-19 while they beat some of the best teams in the area. Mike Katz was 2nd team ALL- NIC DH and Mike Young was 2nd team ALL-NIC SS. The team was young and most of the talent will be returning this year, so a great 1985 season is predicted. Thanks to Coach Tomaszewski ' s guidance, the Junior Olympic team won the gold medal in Florida this summer. — •— (Above) Derek In aid delivers the pitch. Changes which set precedents. One such change is the addition of two police officers to the staff at WHS. Mr. Taffie Mallard and Mr. Eddie Vann are both offi- cers of the S.B.P.D. For many students the attitude towards the officers was resentment. To many others a feeling of se- curity came about. 1. Mr. Mallard shows his seldom shown smile 2. One of the biggest precedents set was the run- ning of a black candidate, Jesse Jackson, said to be one of the most charismatic of the candidates. Jack- son was also noted for his moving oratories. Though Mondale lacked a certain flare and original- ity, according to students polled before the election, he was the candidate of choice of those polled, which included the entire senior class. Ironically, though Reagan won the WHS election, he was not favored in the student opinion poll. His gener- al policies including budget cuts and foreign policy decisions surfaced as the cause for the disfavor. Since the outcome did not coincide with the pre- venting poll, one wonders, Who voted for Reagan? Finals . . . Mondale — 96 Reagan — 104 1. Kim Peterson, a senior, casts her vote. 2. Club member- ship has jumped from 12 to 50 students and has added a large number of high school girls to the organization. Girls have been allowed to be F.F.A. members since 1962, and I think they add alot to the program. says Bernhardt. Seniors, however, have a far different thought in mind. What will they do with their life now that their high school years are over? This year ' s graduation was again the emotional experience that it is known to be. As everyone hugged, cried, and breathed a quiet sigh of relief, they knew their lives would no longer be the same; their high school years were now over. Valedictorians were Ken Kochanowski and Mark Laskowski. Salutor- ian was Sharon Demski. V f V i£ii Cheerleaders The cheerleaders started off the year with a car wash held in front of the school to earn money for camp. In June they attended the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) Camp held at St. Mary ' s Collete. Along with many ribbons they brought home the Spirit Stick . Practice for the year started in June and continued until March. We also sold green white garters to help buy new uniforms The varsity cheerleaders for the 1984-85 football season and basketball seasons were Seniors Kim Gish, Lori Hairston, Lori Lindsey, and Joann Sayer. Juniors include Ronie Rodriquez and Janice Wieczorek and Panther mascots Julie Rozmarynowski and Colleen Szweda. Junior-Varsity cheerleaders were Junior Stephanie Huffine and Sophomores Jodie Bilinski, Gayle Carothers, Amy Coppens, Angie Green and Angle Hawkins. Freshmen Cheerleaders were Letasha Barnes, Colleen Cassidy, Nancy Demski, Brenda Ganus, Charlette James and Cindy Katovsich. The new cheerleaders sponser is Mrs. Rozmarynowski. Sue Lutomski and Jeanne Wilmes were elected captains for the 1984 campaign. Led by the all around play of Kim Grant, setting of Barb Anastos, Wendy VanSlager, hitting of Wilmes, Colleen Dippel, defense of Lutomski, Darlene Phillips, and the back row play of Danoris Jenkins and Cindy Jozwiak the team took off on a slow pace but imp roved as time passed. The highlights of the year included victories over Memorial, Elston, and a come from way behind victory over Clay. The year also marked the first appearance by a WHS volleyball team in an invitational tourney held in Michigan City. The Panthers finished 4th out of the 8 teams with a record of 2-2. The varsity ended its season at a mark of 5-11, 3-5 in the NIC. The B-team ended its season by defeating LaSalle with a record of 4-8. The team was coached by Robin Bella. The freshman ended the season in tourney play, losing to LaSalle with a record of 0-8. The frosh were coached by Shelley Szalewski. Thanks to those who dedicated themselves to the team this year. Even though our defensive secondary was hit hard by graduation, and the players we used did a super job. We started the season using 8 of our 11 starters on our offensive and defensive unit, but we were getting run down at the end of the game by teams that platooned. After the Elston game, we decided to platoon ourselves. We could get a good look at younger athletes while leaving the older, experienced athletes on offense, using them on defense only in critical situations. There was tremendous improvement on both offense and defense. Next year we will return 16 letter winners, 4 of whom are 2 year letter winners. The GREEN MACHINE will be back with a vengence. Football Football has always been my favorite sport, and given the chance to play, it has been a blessing. When I came to Washington I was well aware of the pride and tradition the school had. My junior and Seniors years, in short, were not the best, record wise, but the friendship I gained and the pride I felt in myself and in my school are things I ' ll never forget. My Senior year, though, I was honored by being voted co-captain of the team and 2nd. team NIC. Football is a great sport and putting on that Washington uniform made it that much better. To all the underclassmen, take my word, you will only be as good as the work you put into football. Remember one thing, whatever sport you play for Washington people will come after you, but don ' t give up and never, never say you ' re not as good as the person across the line from you. When I came to Washington I had in mind that I could lead the Panther team to victory. Together with my senior teammates, I led the team in leadership and pride. My junior year I made the number 2 NIC team, 2nd team All state and 1st team Junior All state. My senior year was great. UCLA, Georgia, Ohio State, S.M.U. and Purdue were all interested in me. I also made 2nd team All state again this year. The best advice I can give all athletes, male or female, is to keep your grades up, try hard, and you will be fortunate enough to play. The class also spon- sored the first ever evening pep rally that was held the night before the February 8 basketball homecoming game against Elk- hart Memorial. In addition to sponsoring both pep rally and homecoming dance, the class held a number of fund raisers to prepare for their senior year. Abbiehl, Richard Abigt. Dawn Abraham, Lisa Adams. They also had cake raffles at a few of the home basketball games. In addition to their own fund raisers, some members of the class contributed hours of their time to help raise money for the American Lung Association through the U93 Christ- mas tree project. Some came expecting to work, others with ideas of fun and games. They soon realized that there is some fun but few games! After establishing a pattern of work in the class- the class of 19$$ set out to enjoy extra curncular activities and class projects. Among those projects was the organization of a few dances. The panthers this season were powered by returning letterman Benard Vaughn, at 1051bs., Mike Yarborough at 119lbs., Max Lopez at 1321bs., Mike Anderson at 1381bs, Bruce Smith at 1451bs., the only senior on the team Dan Garber at 155 lbs., and Billy Briones at heavy wt. Washington ' s arch swim team rival would have to be Lasalle, because the teams are so evenly matched, this year being no exception. Potential opponents for next year include Bremen, Plymouth, North Judson, and North Wood. These teams are perhaps more evenly matched to our program than such powerhouses as Riley, Elkhart Central, Michigan City Elston etc. Coach Wolf swam for Washington from 1978-82. This year ' s team is very young, but shows much potential, look for this team to put some records on the board and have a winning season within the next couple of years. Otolski conies to Washington from St. Joe and brings approxi- mately 15 years of coaching experience. With six letter winners returning, the Panthers had strength and leadership. Kevin Kowalski and Charles Black dominated under the basket. The backcourt in- cluded Eric Crittendon, Harry Mitchell, and Brian Mill- er. Terence Matthews was lost for much of the early season with a wrist injury. The young men of Washington ' s basketball team worked hard, improved much and matured. Standing: (l-r) Ricky King. Pat Vargo, Tim King, Mike Dials, Curry Thorpe, Bryant Johnson, and Coach Weber. Kneeling: Bernie Hoskins, Scott Fahey, James Thorpe, Bruce Smith, and Tony Pellico. Washington High School ' s freshman basket ball season ended with a 6-8 record. The high light of the season was the victory over Elk hart Central. The Panther ball club went onti tourney play against a tough Mishawaka Mar ian team. Although they lost by a small mar gin, Andre Pope thrilled the fans with his 2 points. With most of the freshman returning as sophomores, the B-team should be awe some next season. Standing: Coach Kowalski, Otis Davis. Charles Morris, Scott Govan. Andre Pope. Front row: Darrick Farlow. Girls ' Basketball Left to right: Seniors Mary Williams, Aslisa Rogers. Carla Baker. Above: 1984-85 Girls ' Varsity Basketball Team. 1984 Girl ' s Varsity Basketball team featured the return of 3 players with substantial varsity experience. Led by senior co- captains Carla Baker and Mary Williams who provided the inside and outside Conference foes. First year senior forward Lisa Rodgers played very well despite lack of Varsity experience. Juniors who gained valuable court time were Michele Lewis. Wanda Jones. Debbie Weiler, Tina Kilgore. Antoinette Thomp- son, and Lynn Chrzan, A sophomore. Lisa Scott and a freshmen Cindy Stallworth provided the needed depth at the forward and guard positions. First year mentor Bruce Urban found the first part of the season difficult, but put the right combinations to- gether to produce much needed victories. The future of the girls program is at the B-team level where a very competive group of athletes performed admirably. The leaders were Juniors Erika Jones and Marilynn Mitchell, Sophomores Andrea Reed. Joann Phillips. April Franklin, and Monica Richardson. The strongest level was at the Freshmen class by Shawn Huffine, Ann Wis- niewski, Iris Reed and Heather Woods. The teams would not have survived without the guidance of varsity assistant coach Jim Dembinski. and B-team coaches Melissa VanOrt and Trish Nolan. The individuals helped the athletes play above their opponent in both ability and character. The future of WHS girls basketball is bright, depending on how much parts of the team coaches and players, improve in the skills needed to have winning seasons. I am Christina Plantinga an ex- change student from the Netherlands. The organization which arranged ever- ything for me is YFU (Youth for Under- standing). I am staying here for ten months. My arrival was August 13, 1984. I am staying with the Lang fam- ily this year. For the first time I have sisters. They are: Amy Lang, who is a junior, and Beth Lang, who is a fresh- man. My American mom is Phyllis Lang and my American dad is Tom Lang. We, the five of us, live in North Liberty. In the Netherlands, I live in a pretty, small village called Grouw, in Fries- land. My village is very pretty and in summertime is full of tourists from all of Europe. At home I have a brother called Paul. He is 20 years old. My mom is called Minke and my dad is called Henk. I have gained many new friends here. Also, in the beginning of the school year, I joined the WHS swim team, which was very enjoyable. I plan to join the girls ' tennis team, also. School is very different here com- pared to the school in the Nether- lands. At WHS there is such a big vari- ety of subjects. Personally, I think that ' s great. In our Dutch school, we have only the main subjects like lan- guages, history, math, science, etc. I also think that our study level in the Netherlands is quite a bit higher. One thing I adore here is the football and basketball games. They are so much fun. The cheerleaders, pom pons, and band make it so special. I just love it. Christina and her American family. The Lanes. Dennis is working hard on his typing skills. I come from a little country in northern Europe called Denmark. When I came over here, I started living with a family in Seymour, but there were some things we couldn ' t work out, so I had to move. Now I live with The Corthiers who are a wonderful family. I was afraid it was going to be awful hard to start all over again, but I got a good friend in Mike Young. He really made me forget a lot about my homesick- ness. 1 don ' t know how you feel about this school, but I can tell you that I have never met so many people who were so nice to me, except you. I have been all over Europe, except the eastern countries. One of the things I en- joy most is playing soccer. I play for our soccer team now, and after the first 4 games our record is: 2 won, 1 lost, and 1 tie. I have scored 18 goals. I was very sur- prised the first time I went to a football game, because I had nev- er seen cheerleaders before. We don ' t have that in Denmark, so I thought that looked kind of funny with all those girls jumping around and yelling, but I liked it. At half-time and quarters I could sit and look at all those pretty girls.
