When looking back into the past five to ten years from nov , a lot will be missed and yearned for. Of course there are a few details we will be grateful to be finished with, such as school-work, homework, and finals, but for the most part all of the fond memories and good times will be remembered. Who could forget all of the anticipated Friday nights, coming home from school only to start getting ready to leave again? We would usually attend a football or basketball game to be followed by going to McDonald ' s or maybe a school sponsored dance. Sharing these times and many others throughout high school with special friends was a big part of each student ' s life. Extra-curricular activities, clubs, parties, dates, and even going to the beach in the summer were all a part of high school. The everyday events we take for granted now, will soon become the cherished memories of our lives. asiinqton ,liqh .Sc ' v-qI (.South Bend, Ini. ) Above left: Principal Mr. David Kaser Above right Asst Principal Dr. James Cohen Left: Asst Principal Mr. Don Truex Opening 3 4 Student Lite To some, the last day of school meant the beginning of a new life. The seniors of today will enter the job market, move away, or become freshmen all over again, but this time in college. To everyone else, that last day of school meant freedom at last — the closing of the books, shedding the school attire for short s and T-shirts, and saying good-bye once more to all those favorite and not-so-favorite teachers. It was summer! Summer was a time of rest and relaxation — lying on the hot, sunny beach, trying for that all-time tan. Fun and activities were everywhere. Riding bikes, playing tennis, going to parties, cruising, swimming, golfing, camping, fishing, and jogging were a few. You could go out with friends any day of the week with no ten o ' clock curfew. Just when life seemed to be carefree and easy, summer came to an end. It was time, once again to get back into the same old routine as last year. All year long, only one thing kept you going — your memories of last summer along with your thoughts of the great one ahead. Students soon got back into the swing of waking up at 6:30 In the morning, talking In the halls and then rushing to get to class on time, studying, and of course homework. Many students looked forward to returning to another year of football games, dances, and musicals. It was the start of another school year that would soon become the memories of our lives. This year students came back to something new, the Epworth Forest Retreat. Forty students and eight staff members of Washington attended the program on September 20 and 21. Its purpose was for the staff and students to work together to point out the strengths and problem areas of Washington High School. The retreat proved to be an important step towards the Improvement of W.H.S. It encouraged students to become involved and speak out. Top: Look at what we ' re making. Bottom: Students take time out from their retreat at Epworth Forest Retreat and Conference Center for a Student Life 9 Everyone took pride in their school. Although some didn ' t show it as much as others did, Washington did have a lot of spirited people. This could be seen through the cheerleaders, band, pom pon girls, athletic teams, and especially the fans. The cheerleaders gave their all to cheer their teams on and to help promote school spirit. The pep band and poms entertained the crowds. The athletic teams tried their best to keep up or improve Washington ' s reputation in sports. And . . . the fans . . . the most important part. They supported the Panthers in many ways. Whether it was by painting their hair and faces green and white, sporting a Washington High School jersey or just by cheering the teams on when they needed it most. Washington ' s student body was one with a great amount of pride and spirit! Top: The volleyball players anxiously await the announcing of their names. We know we worked and played at a level few men will ever reach or even try. After being 0-2 in the conference, we won 15 of our next 16 games to win the N.I.C. After dropping a double header to St. Joe and losing center fielder Greg Fozo for the season (we were 6-4 at that time) we won 20 of our next 21 games. Fozo ' s replacement Mike Katz was injured in the Riley game near the end of the season. Then came our 3rd major setback, the loss of our All- Conference and All-State shortstop Ken Soos to a blood clot. Soos ' s injury came on the day he was to pitch in the Sectional. We lost that game 2-0 to Clay. It was our 1st shutout in 32 games. We ended up 26-6, (confel-ence 15-3) winning the NIC crown and the Colonial Classic. Ken Soos (shortstop) and Jeff Turak (outfield) were 1st All- Conference and 1st team All-state sectional. Dan Sacchini (out-field) was 2nd team Ail-Conference. The team was ranked 1 in the coaches poll when we returned from our spring trip. We stayed in the top 20 poll all season (the lowest was 12th). We finished ranked 7th in the state. The team set 10 school records, including longest winning streak 13 games. Most wins in school history — 26. Most stolen bases — 104. Most home runs — 19. We also had 8 individual school records. Most home runs Jeff Turak — 6. Most runs scored Ken Soos — 42. Most runs batted in Jeff Turak — 44. Most stolen bases Jeff Turak — 30 36. Most bases on balls Jeff Turak - 26. Most wins pitching Ken Soos 9-1-1. Most pitching saves Todd Lane — . Most strikeouts pitching Dan Sacchini — 70. Ken Soos, Jeff Turak and Dan Sacchini were the teams Tri-Captains. B-Team And Freshman Baseball The 1983 B-team and F reshman baseball teams were an inspiration to all sports fans by both having winning seasons. The B-team, coached by Jim Kominkiewicz, posted a 13-8 season as they prepared many young men to play varsity baseball in 1984. The Freshman baseball team dove into a difficult season and surfaced with a 7-1 record. We were proud of our Panther hitters, who coached by Glenn Duddleson, were Freshman League Champions. The 1983 varsity golf team was one of the most competitive in recent years. A highlight was the early season when the squad won its first five matches, including wins over NIC foes LaSalle, Mishawaka, and Elkhart Memorial. Later in the year the golfers dropped close, exciting matches to perennial NIC powers Penn and Elkhart Central. Captain Mark Rafalski and fellow seniors Steve LeeVan, Jim Nowicki, and Kevin Rybicki provided excellent leadership. Underclassmen Scott Tafelski and Bob Rzepnicki were also integral players on the varsity. At the end of the season, Steve LeeVan became MVP, Jim Nowicki earned the Sportsmanship Award, and Mark Rafalski won the coveted Kiwanis Award. Junior Scott Tafelski won the Putting Award and will be a. key to future Panter successes in golf. The 1983 Girls Softball team, coached by Gene Dziubinski, had alot of potential. At times they couldn ' t put it all together but they still fought to the end. The girls next season should go a long way with the talent of the underclassmen. They bring a great strength to the team. The starters most of the season were Michelle VanWynsbergh (Capt.), Lori Rothballer (Capt.), Chris Rzepnicki, and Lori Coquitt, Junior Tracy Gray, Sophomores Shelly Tuttle. Inexperience was, as usual, a drawback, but the Panthers served up a 5-10 season, beating LaVille, Mishawaka, Jimtown, LaSalle. and Northbridge. Much was learned to carry over into the 1984 season. Prom is a special night which is filled with many fond memories to each couple that attends. The theme, as well as the song, were chosed to be You and I. Maroon and silver were the colors, and the Allen Brothers supplied the music. The great occassion took place in the Great Hall of the Century Center. As the evening rolled along, couples were dancing, getting their pictures taken or just conversing with each other. Then, it was finally time for the court to be announced. Everyone eagerly awaited the names of the Princess and Queen. Rosa Aldarondo was chosen Princess and Gayle Demski was crowned Queen. The 1983 prom was a night to remember. Annie Get Your Gun Washington ' s Drama Club and Music Dept. presented an outstanding musical last spring. The musical was Annie Get Your Gun and it provided an evening of dancing, singing and comedy. The musical started with Frank Butler being the best trigger around. A small town girl, Annie Oakley, challenged him and soon became just as famous as he. Annie then fell for Frank and their relationship was closely followed through the musical. Stars of the comedy were Lori Russell as Annie Oakley. Eric Worsham as Frank Butler and Billy Scherpereel as Buffalo Bill. Graduation 31 Commander-in-Chief This school year proved to be another exciting and eventful one for the men at the helm of Washington High School. Mr. Kaser, Mr. Truex, and Dr. Cohen gave the student body yet another year of loyal leadership, preparing us for our life as responsible citizens. Guidance Is Their Game Remember the first day of school when you found out you didn ' t like any of your classes? Or the time when your schedule read Computer Programing, instead of Study Hall? The different programs pertained to what the student was interested in. DE related to retailing. ICT was for those students interested in working in an industrial or medical environment, while COE was for students working in a business related job. HERO was for those involved in any type of food service, and lOL was an advanced type of program for students seriously interested in working in a business type setting within the walls of WHS. Taking Steps And Making Music Under the direction of Mr. Lackey and Mr. Vanderhagen, the Washington High School Band and Flag Corp once again graced football fields and parade routes. Many a basketball game was enhanced by the rough-and-tough spirit of the Pep Band, while serene and peppy music flowed from the souls of the Orchestra, led by Mr. Miller. Students who were fortunate enough to add these subjects to their schedules found themselves working hard practicing, performing, and even fund raising. ■• ft Above: The 1983-84 Washington High School Band, Flag Corp, and Pantherettes, Below The Band performs at one of the football games at School Field. The HATCHET helped to inform the students and staff of the news within our school, and even some events occurring in the community. Some features that highlighted the issues was the coverage of homecomings, feature stories, sports, and the baby pictures of teachers and students. The newspaper was supported with the subscriptions from students, and the advertisements from corporations in the community. The HATCHET was directed by Mrs. Marilyn Fodor who has been associated with the HATCHET for seventeen years. Students were used as reporters, photographers, cartoonists, typists, or editors to help meet the inevitable pressures of the bi-weekly publication of the newspaper. The hard work by the staff was rewarded with the useful experience gained that will enable them to pursue possible careers. Above, The 1983-84 HATCHET staff. Activities 79 A Car Is A Student ' s Best Friend This spring, a number of girls tried out with the high hopes of being chosen as a W.H.S. cheerleader for the following year. They were divided into groups and taught the cheers from the outgoing seniors. After the third day of practice, they were judged. Once the squads were established, a practice schedule was set up for the summer. The girls worked hard all summer long to learn their routines. By the time our football games came along, the squads had a typically polished routine. This year ' s squad had a 60 ' s look. We reverted to having a cheering Panther mascot. The mascot added a new look to the cheers and routines. The cheerleader sponsor, Mrs. Cassie Scherpereel, wanted to bring back W.H.S. tradition. This year ' s varsity squad of seven won praise from a number of W.H.S. alumni. Always cheerleading from the start to the end, and never giving up, the varsity cheerleaders of 1983-1984 proved again that we are the Pride of the West Side. Ward, Coach Mihail, and Coach Horvath. in order to evaluate the 1983-84 varsity football sea- son, we asked Coach Larry Szczechowski, in his first •season as head coach, to share his feelings with us. Coach Ski said the following. I was appointed head football coach at Washington about the last week of school (late in May). I met with the players at this time and started a summer weight training and conditioning program. I could see early that we would have a rebuilding year. A lot of athletes were lost to graduation and at most of the skilled positions (linebackers, deep backs, receivers, running backs, and quarterback). We only had four returning letterwinners. The offensive line seemed to be our strongest unit with three returning starters, and the defensive line returned only two starters. The weight training and condition- ing ran all summer, three nights per week, but attendance was a problem with a lot of athletes not getting involved. I feel this was due to my late appointment and the athletes not knowing what to expect. When practice started in early August, we started looking to fill the vacant positions, but the biggest shock came when only eleven seniors reported for practice which meant a lot of underclassmen would be seeing a lot of action, and the success of the team would be determined by their improvement. The team did improve as the season wore on but the experience of the opponents coupled with our athletes looking at new coaches and coaching philos- ophies was hard to overcome. However I am real pleased with my staff and athletes, and I am looking forward with great anticipation to being a part of the Green Machineior many years. It is a great school with super students, athletes, staff, and administration. Through hard work and loyality to the football program, Washington High School will return to the glory that it once knew. Keiko naturally missed her family and friends, but she said that she liked America because the people that she met were friendly. Keiko participated in Volleyball and Tennis here at Washington. Although she had some difficulty with the language, Keiko did well in her classes. The biggest difference between American schools and Japanese schools she said, was the fact that they did not get to pick their own classes. Keiko has made many friends here. The 1983-84 boy ' s swim team coached by Mr. Ron Hamilton had a 0-9 record. Although the team had a pretty tough season, the individual performances were impressive. The swimmers were led by co-captains Jim Brown and Tony Lentych. Mike Young and Bob Rzebnicki also had good performances. The season was a rebuilding year for the team, for there were only four returnees. Above: Mark Dahms is showing great form in his dive 132 Sports Below Mark Dahms is in the middle of a dive. ' Varsity Basketball The 1983-84 basketball season could only be measured in terms of determination and dedi- cation of the players and coaching staff. Faced with the loss of five starters from last year ' s team, the young and inexperienced Panthers took on a tough schedule with enthusiasm and tenacity. Besides the rugged Northern Indiana Conference opponents, the Panthers played seven teams that were ranked in the top twen- ty during the season including top ranked Michigan City Rogers and Delray Brooks, who many considered to be the top player in the state. Nevertheless, the Panthers met every challenge head on by playing hard, fast, and exciting basketball. Included in their wins was a victory over highly rated Elkhart Central which led to the team being honored as WSBT ' s Team of the Week in Michiana. The Panthers were led by the scoring and rebounding of Eric Chambliss and Charles Black along with the quickness and shooting skill of Andre Wells. Tommy Lee, Darryl Corkey, and Rodney Gadson provided senior strength and leadership. A strong sophomore class, led by Kevin Kowalski, Jimmy Jackson, and Eric Crittenden gained valuable varsity experience and should insure a bright future for the Panther for- tunes. This season ' s Pan- ther team played with the . I courage and dignity ex- ' pected of Washington ,„. athletes and maintained , I the tradition of West Side Pride for the younger players to follow. 1 Coach Weber Rodney Gatson The 1984 Freshmen Basketball season was coached by Mr. Waller. Skills were taught that would enable freshmen hopefuls to have the ability to play B-Team and perhaps even Varsity ball in later years. The freshmen were able to build up an impressive 7-7 record with several close losses throughout the season. Above: Coach Waller WHS. I feel that the team has really improved throughout the season. We all worked hard and gave it our best effort. We seemed to have had a good coach this year who worked hard with us. This year we worked even harder than before because everyone doubted us, but I feel that we had a good year, but as always, it could have been better. Mary Williams The Girls ' Basketball program has improved a great deal. It was not an easy task to get these improvements of team cooperation, determination, and attitude accomplished, but the most enjoyable aspect was having fun while doing the job at hand. With such a positive start, the future holds much promise for Girls ' basketball. Thanks went to the coaches. Head coach was Mr. Lynn Mitchem and B-Team coach was Ms. Alsop. We wanted to take the time now to wish Mr. Nowicki, Mrs. Kodba, and Mrs. Stump farewell and good luck as they entered a new episode in the Memories of Their Lives. Mr. Herczeg, Mr. Jackson, Miss Jenkins, Mrs. Moreno, Mr. Wheeler, and Mrs. Hall were an important part of our school. Some of us may not have known who they were, but we reaped the results of their efforts. Unforgettables Closing 161 What ' s New At W.H.S. Several new programs and groups emerged as the second semester of the 1983-1984 school year began. Among those miscellaneous programs were the SAT Preparation Lab, the RAP (Raising Academic Performance), The Quiz Bowl, and the TESA (Teacher Expectations and Student Achievements). The SAT Preparation Lab helped students to prepare themselves to score well on the upcoming SAT. Computerization was a technique used, and Mrs. Drapek was in charge of the program. RAP was a program designed to raise the academic achievement of some minority students, and TESA was a teacher self-help program where teachers helped each other to improve their professional competences. The newly developed academic team at Washington High School was that of the Quiz Bowl. It was sponsored by Mr. Killeen and was comprised of members ranging from freshmen to senior students. The team competed against students from Adams, Clay, La Salle, and Riley High Schools and answered questions on subjects such as mathematics, science, history, home economics, entertainment, and sports in meets in a season from January to March. Pictured above are Quiz Bowl Coach Killeen and team members K. Kochanowski, L. Strader, T. Ditmire, M. Hauguel, M. Laskowski, S. Sikorski, and R. Snidecki. Memorial Hospital was so pleased with the spring semester of their Adopt-a-School program with WHS that they requested WHS students to participate for a second year. The program is designed to allow sophomores to gain insight into career opportunities which include specific skills and knowledge. Students are also required to perform certain job functions. From gaining job knowledge, students determine the education requirements and therefore are able to prepare their course selections for the career desired. The design of the program allows students to visit thirty different careers. The students visit the hospital every Thursday, alternating mornings and afternoons. Each station evaluates each student after each visit and sends the evaluation to Dr. Cohen. Each student upon successful completion of the thirty-week class will receive a half credit per semester. Students are placed in the job areas for two hours only because the time required for hospital visits is part of the student ' s existing schedule. ciosmg iea Our 1984 MEMORY LANE was obviously different than most of the previous yearbooks. Instead of the usual green cover, we decided that it was time to change the color. We also added much more color due to a good financial situation. The design of an hourglass was picked out to go along with the theme Memories of Our Lives. The theme was chosen because that ' s the purpose of a yearbook — to capture the memories of our lives. Our high school years are filled with many unforgettable, good times and we hope your 1984 yearbook will help you remember those times in years to come. A lot of hard work and dedication by the entire staff was needed to make this book a success. I would like to thank them all. I would also like to thank Kathy B. for all her help and also Greg Gray for all of the running around he did taking pictures for everyone. A special thank you goes to Mr. Beckman, our Josted ' s representative, for all of his patience, understanding, and time. Finally, I would like to thank Mrs. Swintz for ano ther fine year. We all appreciated all of the time she spent on the yearbook and wish her all the best in years to come. We will miss you. I realize that you can ' t please everybody all the time, but I sincerely hope that for the most part your 1984 MEMORY LANE vM hold some special memories your high school years. ««{ ;■.. iii5=-;; jro;?! ths ■rsfy «i? s %
