Seniors Academics Activities Sports Advertising Index Closing Contents 1 Stand Up And Take Notice A Place With Class For the past few years, we had been hearing how the great pride and spirit of W.H.S. was dwindling and how the students were not backing the school like they did before. But it was time for the people who were saying these things to Stand Up and Take Notice that we, the students at W.H.S., were alive and were taking pride in the school and made it a place that stood above the rest. The students joined together, re- gardless of backgrounds, to restore the spirit that many believed was gone. Because of our determination and our respect for W.H.S., the stu- dents were indeed making W.H.S. a Place With Class . Right: Mr. Kaser casually greets the new day with a smile. Above: Lorl Rothballer and Renlta PletraszewskI take time out for a quick drink of water on a hot summer day. The last exam had been taken, the final opening and shutting of lockers was done, and that last walk down the hall, glancing around, recalling the memo- ries of the year that had just gone by was over. You walked to the door and opened it, and took one step out. School was over, and the lazy days of summer had begun. Summer was a time for Freedom . Waking up became easier because ten or eleven o ' clock seemed more reasonable than six or six-thirty. It was time to hit the sandy beaches and catch some rays . No more setting in classrooms all day and going by a certain schedule. Summer was a time to relax and just take things as they came. Sitting back and watching soaps seemed to be what most of the kids liked to do. Another activity was being able to stay out late on weekdays because there was no school the next day. Everything seemed to be running smoothly, but before you knew it you were back to waking up at six o ' clock and walking into that same school you were so happy to leave last June. Like they say, All good things must come to an end , but the memories of the past will remain with Student Life 7 When Labor Day passed every year, kids around the city of South Bend put their summer activities behind them and got ready for school. This past year was no ex- ception. With the intergration plan in its ' second year, things took shape. For the students, it was time to get back into the routine of doing homework and studying. The finishing touches were being made on shopping for school clothes and for school supplies. It seemed like all that was left to do was to take that long walk or drive back to school. At the beginning it seemed to be boring, but once students returned to old friends from the past and new friends from the present, everything began to fall into place, and school days seemed to fly by. Through the years many people have asked themselves, What is there to do in South Bend ? Be- cause of the new buildings around the River City, that question could now be answered. With the construction of the Cen- tury Center and the Marriotte Ho- tel, one could see plays, musicals, lectures, and exhibits. These spe- cial programs gave the people of South Bend and our visitors an op- portunity to just relax and take it easy. The University of Notre Dame contributed to our economy and the social lives of some making South Bend, the place to be. u P3 k ' i ' - £i ' ' i flflP ' ' - Eflk iraiMtf ! K - ' . Student Life U Stand Up For The Panthers With the clear view of how things were run by W.H.S. administrators, students appreciated getting an educa- tion and W.H.S. in general. They started to believe in their school and realized how important it was to have pride in your school. Students again began to Stand Up for the Pan- thers by cheering for their team and by showing them how much they were behind them. The Seniors and Juniors showed the underclassmen just what spirit meant and how much more effort could be shown once they knew that people were backing them. School spirit at W.H.S. was being expressed by almost everyone and not by just a handful of people. Is The People One of the most worthwhile things learned at W.H.S. was how to deal with all kinds of people. By working together, everyone strived to succeed under the same system. Students realized that by work- ing together things got done. If it was working on a school newspa- per or trying to put a play together, the only way to get it done was by teamwork. Everyone had the same opportunity to get involved. The people at W.H.S. made up the Washington spirit. It was not the building itself but more impor- tantly the people inside of the build- ing that decided what the future held for W.H.S. The team had eleven sophomores, one freshman, and one junior who achieved an award at the end of the season. With the winning record posted by the team and with the m any young men contributing to the program, next year should have some bright new faces in the varsity uniforms. The Freshman Baseball team, coached by Bruce Urban, posted a 4-5 record for the sea- son. The team suffered problems early in the Spring, but the team straightened out those problems and came back to have almost a win- ning season. The three act play took hours to produce. In the long run, it was worth it for Ron (Banjo) VanTornhaut and Tressie (Nurse) Johnson, but for old timers, Billy Scherpereel and Bonnie Bejma, it was shear fun. The play concerned a famous director — writer — producer, Sheridan Whi- teside, who slipped and cracked his hipbone on the Stanley ' s doorstep after having dinner with them. Sheri- dan and his secretary decided to live in the Stanley house and take it over. In the end, it all worked out. The play was another smash hit directed by Mr. Good. Play 27 As Friday night. May 21, roled around, many preparations had been made. This night was an unusual night for the W.H.S. Prom. The theme of the prom was chosen. It was We Got Tonight , and the colors were Royal Blue and Light Blue. The night began with a dinner at a choice restaurant and then to the prom. There, the couples enjoyed the music of S.S. XPRESS and had a great time socializing with their friends. About ten o ' clock the court was announced, and the Queen and Princess were announced. The Princess was Michelle Van Wynsberghe, and the Queen was Jenny Maenhout. Tonight Prom 29 On June 6, the Class of 82 received their diplo- mas for which they had waited many years. It seemed that at this point everybody should have been happy and excited that their high school years were done, but there were mixed emotions. Many wanted to feel happy and relieved, but it was hard because of the reflections on the good times had in the past. It seemed that children were no longer, but that young adults who would have to make decisions that would affect the rest of their lii ' e li ere blossoming. These decisions wo It but not impossible. It was time to put skills and knowledge learned from twelve years of school, whether it is in college or in the business world. i Above: Deb CauJill (Sahtatofian the Senior Awards Day. Seniors 33 V-i-c-t-o-r-y Thats Our Senior Battle Cry Four years ago, as the class of ' 83 entered Wash- ington for the first time, the senior year seemed very far away. Freshmen began the process of working their way through crowded halls, searching above doors for the right room number, and meeting their new classmates, many of whom became good friends. As the years went by, all of the high school activi- ties that were so new and different for freshmen — pep assemblies, football games, homecoming, class parties, plays, proms — were enjoyed by many stu- dents and provided some great times. Passing dri- vers ' ed. and getting a driver ' s license, buying a class ring, and getting through those final exams, all led up to that all-important senior year. Suddenly, the fall of ' 82 was here, and the class found itself in the much-anticipated, prestigious role that once seemed so far away — seniors. The senior year brought on a rush of activities, like the paper- work of applying to college or for a job, and also added responsibilities as leaders of the student body. The class of ' 83 lived up to the challenge, carrying on the great tradition of Panther Pride, and left Washing- ton in June with some well-earned diplomas and a host of memories from high school, some of the best years of your life. He especial- ly liked football, and attended many of the Washington football games this year. An athlete himself, he played for Wash- ington in soccer, which is as popular in Europe as football is in America. He had very little difficulty in class or anywhere else due to his language proficiency, and he made many friends during his stay. The senior class wishes Olivier good luck in the future. Although Gerardo naturally missed his family and friends in Mexico, he said that he liked America because that the people he has met have been very friendly to him. A talented guitar player and singer, he took part in the fall Variety Show put on by the Drama Club. Language was not a problem for Gerado, and he maintained good grades at Washington. As freshmen the fear and ex- citement took over and we found ourselves afraid of our own shadows. The elevator passes being sold, just to find WHS has only one floor. As sophomores we swore revenge on the unexpecting freshmen who were going through the same fears we had. Football and basketball games were the high- lights of our social life. We found new loves and new interests, and swore that the senior year was a century away and really didn ' t Our junior year brought new awakenings to each and every one of us. Our first prom was coming up — the new clubs that were opened up to us. We also saw the closing of many fine schools as we strove toward in- tergration. North Liberty brought a totally new look to WHS. These students have ad- ded to the heart of our school, and we thank them for their new and inventive ideas. The seniors look back on all of these fears, joys, and good times but also look ahead to a new life. It is with sad hearts that we draw a close to our high school career, but with refreshed and proud minds that we plan to keep the reputation of WHS in our hearts as we become an active and suc- cessful part of our society. When she moved into our new kitchen, there were no drains, but the joys of the people coming and going all the time will remain. Mrs. Combs will miss each student but will leave with wonderful memories of each and every day at WHS. Saying fare- well to her is like saying good-bye to an institution. Language Club has always been one of our largest organizations, and this year was no exception, with the membership well over fifty. The club was made up of French, Latin, and Spanish classes, but for the first time in many years, there were no German classes. At the beginning of the year nominations were held for the four offices. Julie Sheridan was elected President, Lisa Odusch, Vice-President, Billy Scherpereel, Secretary-Treasurer, and Joanne Morey, Program Chair- men. This year, Billy Scherpereel along with Kathie Corny and Mr. Good, established a Thespian Troupe, the first since 1 969. These Thespians produced the Senior play. This year ' s staff consisted of twenty-seven hard work- ing, dedicated young people. Through the inspirtual guidance of our sponsor Mrs. Swintz and Editor-in- chief Michelle Van Wynsberghe, this years Memory Lane was one of the best Washington has ever seen. Many staffers did their part in Mrs. Swintz ' s. first hour publications class and the others on their own free time. By the end of the year many of the staff were tired from carrying M M boxes around to defray the cost of the yearbook. The Panther harriers accomplished several feats which had eluded previous teams. Among these gratifying performances were the team championship at the South Central Invitational, fourth place finish in the Sectional, and a surprising fifth place finish in the Regional meet. The Panthers ' success was especially sweet because the team lacked depth, was less experienced, and probably less talented than many teams it out- performed. The secret of this group ' s success was simply hard work, dedication, and perserverance. Each runner continued to improve throughout the season. They performed best when it counted most. Outstanding senior leadership was provided by captains Brady Neilson and David Molnar. Brady established a school record by running 15:58 in the regional meet. Coaches Welling and Alspaugh were extremely proud of the 1982 Cross Country team, both on the course and off. They rep resented Washington well. They had some impressive performances by sen- iors Tom Laney, Mark Phillipi, and some good outings by Tony Lentch, and eager to improve, Mike Young and Jim Latson. Hard work, two practices a day, emd time consuming hours have satisfied indi- vidual performances. 126 Boys Swimming mi.ws miitma, ' . Hard work and much enthusiasm stirred the produc- tion of a tough ball club. The Panthers learned the value of teamwork and spirit through the dedicated coaching of Miss Shively. The returning seniors, captain Lori Rothballer, Shelly Szalewski, Chris Pe- cina, and Pat Vanslager, led the varsity team to a 7-6 winning season. The season did not end spectacularly as the girls de- sired, but the victory of gaining teamwork and spirit made the season valuable. The varsity club entered the South Bend sectionals conquering a prepared Clay club. But in the semi-final match against a troublesome Adams team, the Panthers fought vigorously to a defeated end. This match finished a difficult season but marked the beginning of fond memo- ries of the experiences gained this year. The B-team Panthers also fought a tough season ending in a 6-7 record. Headed by captain Sue Lutomski the team cooperated and worked hard throughout the season. These girls profit- ed this season by attaining experience for the upcomming year which should prove to be productive. Good Luck, Panthers! Girls Still Hopeful The 1982-83 Girls Basketball Team, coached by Jo Masey, proved to be the starting blocks of what could be the start of a good Girls Basketball program. This year, the girls showed great improvement and showed teams around the city that they came to play basketball. Lead by Seniors; Tressy Johnson, Kim Kilgore, Faye Rodgers, Kim Miller, Bonnie Bejma, and Mi- chelle VanWynsberghe, and Juniors: Gwen Bradford and Michele Bonek, the team fought to the end. With great performances by Gwen Bradford and Tressy Johnson, good court leadership by Bonnie Bejma, and the outstanding play of the rest of the team, they might not of been winners in the win-loss bracket, but they were in the character in which they played. 1982-83 Varsity Girls Basketball Left: Gwen Bradford and Mary Williams fight for a rebound. The Panthers, coached by John Sol- mos, won the tournament by defeating always tough Riley and then by squeaking by St. Joe in the final round. After many ideas and good possibilities this theme was chosen for a couple of important reasons. First of all, the area parents, administrators, and alma mater of Washington High School felt that the student body at W.H.S. and the Pride of the Westside were not like before, but it was time for these people to Stand Up and Take Notice that the pride and spirit of W.H.S. was back. Second of all, the theme was picked because of the student body. The students began to show to everyone around the city that W.H.S. was alive and well on the Westside. Wheth- er at pep assemblies or in the stands, spirit was being shown, and the pride of the school was once again back in the hearts of its occupants. It is time for everyone around to Stand Up and Take Notice of the Pride of W.H.S. As Editor-in-Chief of the 1983 Memory Lane. I would like to thank the many members who gave their complete time and devotion into making this our best yearbook. Whether it was working late into the night or budgeting their schedules to meet deadlines, everyone worked togeth- er. In addition, a special thanks and a warm handshake goes to Mrs. Swintz, our adviser. Thanks for the many extra hours put into meeting deadlines and for being there when any problems arouse. Also a big thank you goes to Mr. Jim Beckham, American Yearbook Representative, who put in his share of time, whether it was working late on Senior color layouts or making that special trip into school to check up on everything. Every member of the staff should feel proud of the 1983 yearbook and thanks again for making the 1983 Memory Lane possible. By looking through the book and by reading it, we hope you can pick out the great memories of your high school days and be able to treasure them for the rest of your life. If it might only be one great or special memory, we hope the 1983 Memory Lane will be there whenever you need to take that look back — five, ten, or twenty years from now. Michelle VanWynsberghe Editor-in-Chief a;;;! iWHIllllilKi ,
