HBhk T « n . . . down memory lane Student Life 8 Academics 26 te Sports 46 i Activities 76 iJ Album 106 Making it . . . At 8:10 a.m. the students begin filing through the doors. The assignment that lies ahead is not an easy one. They must MAKE IT through another day at Washington High School. Platform shoes, sunglasses, and different style hats are not uncommon as everyone tries to MAKE IT in the fashion scene. The bells begin to ring, and students head for class. Tests and homework seem to be the only things teachers think about, and now you must cancel tonight ' s plans so you can stay home and do your homework. That ' s the way things go as you try to MAKE IT through the brain strain. Cl . . .in fashion Making it. . . - ' .4 . . .go down Finally, there is a break in your monotonous schedule of classes. It ' s time for lunch, and you ' re faced with the challenge of MAKING the food go down. Most of the time, this seems an easier task than it ' s made out to be. Soon after, the school day is over. Maybe there is a meeting of a club you belong to. Or, if you ' re involved in sports, you go to practice, where you are MAKING IT with your muscles. Many things are changing today. People are becoming closer despite differences in language and culture. Some can only hope things continue in this direction, but— YOU CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN! Making it. . . A typical day in a high school student ' s life. One challenge after another, ranging from getting up in the morning to worry- ing about the three tests you have that day. But quickly it ' s over. 3 o ' clock arrives, and you can relax . . . Until the next morning, when ... . . . through the day Our Day Begins 10 I i i J No matter how early in the morning the student starts his classes, coming to school is one of the worst parts of his day. First he has to wait for the doors to open, then he tries to open his locker, which always seems to jam. Finally he can begin to stroll the halls before the bell announces his first class. 11 The Obstacle Course GIRLS 12 The most active spot in school, besides the classrooms, has to be the hallways. They are the major highways in our everyday school lives. No one is really sure what youll see next. 13 Snooze or Study? 14 When you had a late night with your girl, or your boss kept you past closing time; this is the place to catch up on some sleep— but most students do get work done and learn something new. 15 Finally — It s Over! 18 5 ... 4 ... 3 ... 2 ... 1 ... the bell rings and the rush for the buses and cars begins. The lockers slam and moans are heard when the students realize how much homework they have acquired throughout the day. Though for the most part everyone relaxes when that final bell rings; they still must get ready for the bell that will ring the next morning. 19 Another Day — Another Class ■?t .wafer- 20 A student ' s life can be a hassle some- times, especially in a large west end high school. You can never be sure what you ' ll see in or around the school. From the parking lot Saturday morning to the dress shop after school, students are themselves 24 hours a day. 21 Definitely Not a Typical Day ) V J ► . i s ski ' ' VBk (_ 1 j 22 From the depths of the auto shop to the heights of the gym, from the regions of the cafeteria to the passages of the halls, students will still be involved with their school even though there aren ' t teachers to supervise them. They have clubs and activities in which they are constantly involved. 23 What Next? 1 There is a lot in store for each one of us next year. Most will be back to face another year at Washington, while some will leave this home away from home never to return again. Four years seem Uke a long time, but in reality, it passes very fast. And when those four years are over, many students find themselves won- dering- What Next? s. 24 zmmmw liffinj; II 25 Making It. . As each student comes to Washington, he has his goals, his own ambitions, his own dreams. Maybe his goals are to study, learn of civilizations that crumbled apart many years ago, know what they valued, the reasons for their wars, or come to an understanding of our vast universe, the unseen forces which govern it, or merely comprehend how one minute DNA chain functions in a cell. Or maybe the culture and language of another people is the knowledge he wants. All this, and more, awaits those whose goals are to conquer the wide expanse of knowledge. r . i, M . . . through the brain strain A Cool Million Plus More Following the retirement of Mr. Thompson, Mr. Robert Million became our new principal. Mr. Million has at- tempted to establish a rapport between himself and the students, and he is suc- ceeding. Since he was once both teacher and coach, as well as Assistant principal, he is familiar with all order of student hfe. Washington is fortunate to have such a loyal, dedicated and concerned admin- istrator. Mr. Cohen has interest in all student affairs, which is made obvious by his varied responsibilities. He is involved in Student Council, Human Relations Board, PVE, and the Yearbook to name a few. James Cohen ' s enthusiasm and participa- tion in Washington ' s activities help our school run smoothly. After a one-year absence, Mr. Peregrine has returned to Washington High as an Assistant Principal. He does not work only with discipline problems; his other tasks are working with the counselors and with budgeting. Philip Peregrine is filled with Panther Pride, and it ' s good to have him back at Washington. 28 Secretarial Staff •V ' « i Washington ' s excellent secretarial staff handles many tasks requiring ample re- sponsibility and infinite efficiency. Students had the chance to study the cul- ture and lifestyles of the people in other countries. Latin stories, German plays, French records, and Spanish games make individual classes interesting. The students also spent time conjugating verbs, con- structing sentences and memorizing tenses. Making it with your muscles is a large part of growing up. Here at W.H.S. the athletic program is very popular. Pride is an asset to the players. Making it in athletics does not always mean winning, but also learning to accept failure. Ath- letes develop a good mental attitude to- wards other people. Making it in sports means developing the body to its best condition. If you learn that winning is not all there is to sports, then you wUl have truly made it with your muscles. )■• ' , K ir PN i 1 i 1 4 1 Lit . . . with muscles (2i - O On 20 - • r ' CO - l • rj clj . ou. .i5 . It ' s South Bend Washington against the rest of the Indiana High School Football world. In preseason ratings, the Washing- ton Panthers were ranked 28th in the nation! This plus the fact that the Pan- thers are the reigning IHSAA First Class AAA CHAMPIONS made their job a lot tougher. The other teams had one thing in mind, defeat the Green Machine. Some teams were successful, our all time rivals Elkhart Central and Mishawaka, but the other teams fell to the Panthers ' feet just knowing they were the roughest and best- coached team in the state. The Green Machine started out on the long road of keeping the title STATE CHAMPIONS . This year ' s team began the season with PRIDE and ENTHUS- IASM. We want Seans , of a great coach. The Panthers were rated No. 1, and they had that No. 1 spirit back- ing them. To make coming back to school a pleasure the Panthers went to Gary West on August 30 and turned them upside down with a score of 31-8. The Green Machine slaughtered East Chicago Washington hands down (or was it?). Alan Rzepka handed off to Reggie Magee and Jerry Jennings for touchdowns. John Byers used his gift of grab to steal the ball and raced 40 yards for a TD. The football seemed like a magnet to Larry Dippel, Delbert Lane and Dennis Wheeler who did the fumble recovering for the team. Rzepka and Bob Porter, who were at the right place at the right time on defense, both accounted for an interception. Panthers triumphed 44-0. Jennings doing what he does best. With 144 carries he gained 720 net yds. He finished with an average of 5 yds. a carry. He was the 2nd leading kickoff re- turner with an average of 17 yds. It was Friday the 13th when the undefeated Panthers met their fate with Elkhart Central. The Blazers dominated the first half, but the Panthers held them to a 7-0 lead at the half. The Blazers finally received the breaks after losing to the Panthers the last two years in the last seconds. The Panthers ' 16 game winning streak and dominance of the ratings was shunned 27-0. 51 The Panthers, not taking their defeat badly, plowed over Michigan City, Elk- hart Memorial, Riley, and Adams by scores of 26-7, 20-14, 30-0, and 28-20. These victories brought the Panthers ' spirit back to life. Another game for life or death for the playoffs. The Mishawaka Cavemen were out for revenge on the Panthers. The Panthers needed the win for a chance to get into the playoffs. Revenge for the Cavemen was difficult to receive, only defeating the Green Machine 14-7. The Panther ' s average score per game was 22.8 points their opponents average was 10.0 points. Above: Ken Underwood, Mark Karkiewicz and Kurt Nowak are enjoying themselves at the football game. The team had 122 first downs this year, 96 on running plays Uke this one. LaPorte wanted to do what Mishawaka did to the Panthers, but to their surprise the Panthers won 14-3. Finally, the Panthers met with their Westside neighbor LaSalle on a warm November evening. The Green Machine scored in the first few minutes of the be- ginning of the game. Then, the Lions came back to tie the score 7-7 before the half. The Panthers did their thing and defeated the Lions 24-7. Bob Porter finds out returning the foot- ball is a rough task. He had 14 punt re- turns for an average of 8 yards each. 53 This year ' s 1974 Football squad was under the leadership of Coach Beans Van Camp. The final product of his work was a torrid, well- oiled Green Machine. This brought the Green to a very respectable 8-2 record. Defense had traditionally been associated with Washington, and this year was no excep- tion. Coach Jerry Klaybor took pride in his work and turned out a first-rate defensive squad. Offensive Line Coach, Leonard Kapsa, brought the Panthers into the game mighty enough to run over any defense. Thus he walked away from the headphones on the side- lines for the final time, capping a career began here in 1957. F Top: Delbert Lane stumbles his way for a gain against Elkhart Memorial. The Freshman squad, under the leader- ship of Coach Mike Sipotz, topped their season with an untouchable 6-0-1 record, and a city championship. Coach Joe Redling, the Athletic Di- rector at Washington, played a major part in assisting the Freshmen to their title. Left: Quarterback Al Rzepka gets off a short pass as the rush comes at him. Headed by seniors Ed Runyan, Pete Zielinski, and Mike Waumans, the team went on to defeat John Glenn H.S. in the Tl«j ii sectional matches by a score of 5-0 but lost the second sectional match to La- Ville. LaVille went on to play Adams in the final. The squad with this year ' s disappoint- ments behind them look forward to a more prosperous 1975 season. Despite the lack of experience, and the fact that our players had to play opponents who have been playing the game for some time, the B-teamers never let up and finished the season with three victories. In the W.H.S. B-team Tournament, Mike Yates finished in first place with Andy Pyfer finishing second. Many of this year ' s B- team will have a good chance to play varsity next fall. Cross Country team had a season marked by total team effort and motivation. Most of the meets they lost were by slight margins. They won three of twelve, those against North Liberty, New Praire and Elkhart Memorial. Coach StaUworth points out that it takes something special to be a runner. We take pride in what we do. The team was led by Kevin Days, Chuck Minor and Kevin Henderson. Days had the fastest time on the team this year: 13:42 for 2% miles. In sectional play with over 200 run- ners, three Panthers finished in good standings for the team. Kevin Days came in 45th, Chuck Minor came in 53rd, and Kevin Henderson came in 66th. AU-in-all the season proved very pro- ductive to the team members because of the experience they gained. The Girls Volleyball Team under the coach Miss Shively finished a difficult and trying season, entering the sectional matches. The Varsity Squad, led by senior spikers Ruth Claeys and Diane Smigeilski, won their matches against Clay, Penn, and St. Mary ' s for a 4-6 record at season ' s end. In sectional play they dropped their match to LaSalle, ending their season 4-7. The B-team had a 5-5 record after de- feating Jackson, Clay, Penn and St. Mary ' s, and finished the season 5-6 when they lost their sectional match to Riley. Both teams were better than shown by their records. But records don ' t tell the whole story. The ' 74 volleyball sea- son was marked by a togetherness and team spirit that is very rare. ▲ .A AL. . Whether the teams are win- ning or losing, the spirit of the cheer- leaders never lets down. Cheerleading is a year-round job— of cheering for sports, sponsoring a cheerleading workshop for junior high squads, practicing during the summer and going to camp. The Varsity and B squads went to N.C.A. Cheering camp the first week of August at Vincennes Univer- sity, Ind. One of the two most impor- tant awards given at camp is the Spark Plug award. This award is voted on by all the squads and given to the most spirited squad at camp for the week. Our W.H.S. Cheerleaders were honored to bring it back to school for the first time this year. Back row-Butler, Ken; Carpenter, Melvin; Peyser, Coach Subby Nowicki opened up his 17th season as coach at S. B. Washington with not a single returning lettermen. Riddled by graduating loss and hurt by the lack of experience, he put together a young squad thirsting for the taste of competition. The Panther team had quite an uphill climb. Boasting not a starter over 6-3, having not one returning lettermen, and playing against some of the state ' s best, the Panthers were determined to chal- lenge its 74-75 schedule. The Panther ' s hopes were high, but reality soon set in. Troubled by game- playing conditions, the Green slowly learned how to cope with the bigger squads as time passed. This valuable play- ing time set the pattern as the season pro- gressed. Challenging the Panthers were the states best: S.B. Adams, Hammond Clark, Michigan City, North Judson, Mish- awaka, and Huntington, just to name a few. The loss of a game by a small margin or large did not affect the teams growing determination to keep on playing. The Panthers played many games to the end with very close scores only losing by a Jim; Much, Daryl; Ogorek, Frank; Lichkay, Bob; Days, Kevin. few points in the final seconds of play. Even though the team had a larger num- ber of losses, Mr. Nowicki and his players spirit were never given up. The Panther ' s spirit showed itself in the sectionals. The Panthers defeated La- Salle whom they had fallen to twice be- fore; they were then called upon to face the state ' s 2nd ranked team, Adams, to whom they lost by a close score 66-62. The foundation was being set for the 1975-76 season. With a top notch crew of Juniors returning with that sorely needed experience, the Green can look forward toward a respectable season next year. This year the Green had never died fight- ing till that final buzzer. They fell short on numerous times away from home, but their determination and Panther spirit were two characteristics that never befell them. Though the record was not one the best around 4-17, the Green had ac- complished a true desire to win and with that well-deserved experience and return- ing starters to next years squad, the Pan- thers from Washington are already on their way to a sound, fundamental start for 1975-76. 62 kV. The two games lost were only by one and two point mar- gins, St. Joe 37-35 and Schmucker 47-46. The qualities of the team that kept them going were their quickness, team spirit, and their aggressiveness on the playing floor. Disappoint- ment was always widely felt since the team lost all of its contests. One of the major reasons was the lack of partici- pants. This team had lost 3 meets by 1 5 points or less, and 2 meets by 20 points or less. Because W.H.S. can ' t fill all the events with three swimmers, nine points are given away every meet. Considering this fact, those team members now swim- ming are doing an outstanding job. With only 2 or 3 additional trained swimmers, W.H.S. could have won five of its last duel meets. A full squad would consist of six 4- girl relay teams, and three girls in each of twelve events. The team consists of 15 members, but should have twice that number. Our greatest asset is that the team is a young one. With freshman coming out next season, we have a positive outlook for the future. Sitting; M. Redinbo, C. Chavez, kneeling; S. Rahn, M. Harrison, D. The squad had eight returning lettermen but weren ' t quite able to get it altogether. Evidence for this is seen in the dual meet results. We only won three meets. But, there were five meets that were extremely close; two were lost by 10 points, one by 5 and one by 2. Actual- ly then, 35 points made the difference between a losing (3-10) season, and a win- ning (8-5) season. Despite the dual meet record the championship meets brought encourage- ment. In the city meet we defeated Riley and Lasalle. In the conference meet we beat them again, and also Mishawaka and Michigan City Elston. Not only did we see some improve- ment in the won-lost column, but in indi- vidual performance as well. We drew heavily on the talents of the four seniors but some underclassmen came on stronger at the end of the season. If we get support from the student body next year could be a better one; maybe that season could be the one when we get it all together. Blood, Sweat and Tears-a fitting name for the 1975 Panther Wrestling team. Anyone who came to a few wres- tling practices could see that blood is actually shed due to injuries during the agressiveness of the sport. Sweating is very common to a wrestler who many times has to shed a few extra pounds through hard work. The tears come with the agony of defeat. Several fellows came out for wrestUng at the beginning of the season, but few of them had the desire, strength or endur- ance to make it through the full season. It takes quite an individual to perform well in the classroom, at home, as well as on the mat for a full season. When asked what keeps wrestlers mo- tivated, Coach Evans replied, The thing that keeps wrestlers motivated is the same impetus which keeps individuals going in hfe. A desire to succeed and overcome. In life you have an opportunity to shine. In wrestling you have that same oppor- tunity. 72 1 .A Murray Miller; scored a first place in the Northern Indiana Conference Tourney. This record was a sort of thank you, because of the improvement in the wresthng styles of individuals such as Terry Reed, Murray Miller, Jeff Patterson, Bruce Black, Lyn Smith, and Ken Karczewski. Two of the wrestling team ' s biggest assets this year were seniors Jerry Jen- nings and Doug Outlaw. Jennings took first place in the Portage Holiday Tour- ney, the North Central Invitational, and the Northern Indiana Conference Tour- ney, while Outlaw snatched blue ribbons in the Portage Holiday Tourney, and the Northern Indiana Conference Tourney. They can help him withstand the pressures of studying and homework, by taking his mind off his worries for an hour or two each day. Band, cheerleading, student council, and a variety of clubs are just a few of the many activities students have the chance of becoming involved in when they at- tend Washington High School. Happen! Homecoming 1974 78 This year ' s homecoming court was filled with both excitement and suspense before Tomasina Thompson was crowned as the 1974 football homecoming queen. She was escorted by Ivan Jennings. The other girls nominated for the court with their escorts were: Robin Alford and Rich Sobczak; Kathy Andrysiak and Norman Golba; Patty Bilinski and Brian Rydzinski; Carol Chwalek and Jim Zak- rowski; Carol Erickson and Dennis Chr- zan; Rhonda Fleming and Doug Outlaw; Connie Kaznia and Tom Machowiak; Jackie Townsend and Terry Phillips; and Donna Waddups and Clem Litka. 79 W.H.S. HOCKEY In the past Washington hockey was quite unpopular. This year, however, there were many loyal fans slowly learning the basic fundamentals of hockey. Through- out the seventeen week season, starting the first week of November and ending near the end of February, spectator count increased continually. This season the team ' s ability improved over last year. The coach Jim Seese spent more time with the team than past coaches had. In return for Jim ' s time the team respected him, and that ' s what held the team together through victories and losses. The team sponsored skating parties at the Ice Box to earn money for new jerseys. Dana Fish, a Washington grad- uate, was assistant-coach for the team as he was last season. This year ' s team was lead by seniors, Dennis Chrzan and Mike Borrelli. Other seniors include Paul Bikowski, Vince Horvath, Tom Miller, Paul Ratajczak, and Mark Thompson. Nice try Move it, Chump! Putting out a book that would tell the story of a year at Washington High School. To attack this problem, the staff sent two seniors, Kevin Rendos and John Schymanski, to the Indi- ana High School Journalism Institute last June. At the Institute, which was held at the Indiana Uni- versity of Bloomington, Kevin and John received the fundamentals of putting together a yearbook, as well as developing a ladder, and arriving at a theme for the 1975 Memory Lane. Each section of Memory Lane had its own indi- vidual editor, who was responsible for making the lay-outs and writing the copy for this section. This year ' s section editors were: Bob Borlik— Stu- dent Life, Mary Ann Grabowski— Academics, Kathy Werwas— Activities, Kevin Rendos— Sports, Cheryl Strantz— Seniors, Terry Arch— Underclass, and Gene Arch— Advertising. The Glee Club consists of three very active groups which are: Swing Choir, Concert Choir, and Girls ' Choir. The three groups performed for nursing homes, children ' s hospitals. Head Start programs, group organizations, clubs, and church groups. One of the shows performed this school year was Ragtime Showtime. For the first couple of months at school the choirs spent time on daily rehearsals, the making of costumes, and props in order to organize the show. Most of this was done before, during, and after school, for students who would like to learn or get more out of the music department.
