Kevin was also leading scorer in the NIC. For his feats on the gridiron he was awarded the most valuable player in league play. Leroy Love, also was selected by the AP poll to a de- fensive tackle position. Love also made the All-Confer- ence Team for the second consecutive year. Being switched from offensive guard to tackle. Football ' 72- 73 This year ' s gridiron team lead by six all-conference players (two of them all-state, first team players) were able to compile a seven and two record and part of a conference championship. The Panther ' s first game was a disappointing loss to top ranked St. Joe, by a 21-6 score, but then the tough GREEN MACHINE got on the move. Their first win was against, the ranked l in the state, Elkhart Central. The final score was deadlocked at 3-3 at the end of regulation time. It took a diving catch by Armond Thompson to win the game 10-3 in overtime. The pass was thrown by Kevin Horvath. Our second unfortunate foe was Michigan City, Elston, a 42-8 loser. In this game it was once again Horvath the star under the lights. Horvath had a big night by scoring 24 points, on three touchdown runs and six after touchdown field goals. He also completed two touchdown passes, both being to Armond Thompson. The Big Green ' s third win was over Elkhart Memorial, a 31-0 loser. In this game another Panther star struck. This time it was Mike Miller, as he ran for three touchdowns and set up a fourth. The next game was a tough and surprising defensive battle with a good Riley club. The final score was a mere 3-0 win with Hor- vath booting the winning field goal on a rain drizzUng night. After the Riley win it left the PANTHERS undefeated and untied in conference play which lead up to a big game with undefeated Adams. The whole game was once again a tough defensive battle. This time it was not Horvath, or Miller, or Thompson getting the applause but yet another Panther star Waymon Redding. Waymon out maneuvered and out ran Adams punt return defense and scored the Panthers only touchdown, which proved to be enough, as the Panthers won by a 7-3 score. Another showdown between two top defensive teams was on the agenda against a tough, but the unknown Mishawaka team. The Green Machine was stopped at their five game win streak by a 7-6 score. This time we were on the short end when the time ran out. The only score by the Panthers came on a halfback pass from Alan Rzepka to tight end Dan Zanka. The Panthers did try a comeback with only a few seco nds left but fell short at the fifteen yard mark when the final horn went off. The LaPorte game was just as important as the rest because there were now three teams tied for the conference title with all three having one more conference game left on their schedules. The Panthers came out with a 2 1 -0 win and tied with Mishawaka for the conference championship, since Adams lost their game. Miller took the glory of this game as he ran back the second-half kick- off. The final game was a 26-14 win over LaSalle. Everybody got into the act in this game as Miller, Horvath, and Thompson each scored touchdowns. With Washington having 3 of the 4 juniors on the All-Conference Team and most of the starting offensive team juniors and some sophomores, it ' s right to say that Beans and his coaching staff should expect another winning season in the year to come. 57 Above: Far Left; Gorden Martinczak, All- Conference defensive end, Jerry Gathright, de- fensive tackle. Love making it for his second consecutive season was switched from guard to defen- sive tackle. Barry Kaizer, with mind and heart, was credited with one of the guard positions. Miller finished third on the conference scoring list and was selected for one of the defensive back positions. Gordon Martinczak, after being disabled with a broken hand at the beginning of the season, was able to finish the season and win a defensive end berth. Armond Thompson was credited with an offensive end position. Thompson was the hero in the upset of Elkhart Central with his touchdown catch in the overtime period. Kevin Horvath was our last man to win a berth on the All-Star team. Helping him win the berth was the field goal he kicked to beat Riley 3-0, and his 24 point outburst against Michigan City. This year ' s basketball team, coached by Mr. Nowicki and new assistant Coach Weber, were able to compile a respectable season, to keep the Panther Pride. Lead by junior Dave Wood and seniors Dan Soos, Clifford Harris, Al Brooks, and Ber- nie Miller, the Panthers were able to up- set one of the state ' s top teams, Ham- mond Clark, in the second game of the season. The team, plagued by failure of grade standards and injuries, were still able to carry victories over Marion, Clay (regular season and 1st round of section- al), Elkhart Central, and Goshen. With the team spirit still young and with the hope of grade achievement in the year to come, the Panthers should put together a winning season for the Class of ' 74.
