Through numerous social activities we have remained a school of excellence striving to develop character, pride, and an understanding of social relations. The National Honor Society, the student council, and the human relations board act as inspiration to the entire student body for fairness in all governmental and academic aspects. Sportsmanship and championship in all types of sports has been evident in Washington's athletic events. The Panther may show his loyalty to the school by cheering at the pep assemblies, going to the game, and ioining the cheerblock. Proms, courts, and dances instill a feeling of sentiment and sociability. Car washes, selling taffy apples, life savers, green machine buttons, candy, and ioining Junior Achievement are various fund raising activities used to buy art equipment, band equipment, class gifts and many other items for the school. The Washington Panther is the symbol of pride in achievements. The life of each student is the life of Washington High School. What they do makes Washing- ton what it is. The fun of a class party, the solemnity of'graduation, the ioy of being best are all shared by those around us. Every individual strives towards a goal: each of us wants recognition. There are few accomplish- ments that go unpraised, and little praise given to those who don't deserve it. Our goals are not just personal, they are shared by the entire student body. We make friendships, study for tests together, plan parties to- gether, and live our lives together. The Washington student is a true Panther, a member of a proud and undying family. He represents Washington High School not only in those special moments of glory, but during every day that he lives. -nuff . .vmiil K . ' ,A - I I .W 3 Al 'dz YK QI.-nv' v-f fi 7 03' Q, C fo? Through the assistance of the teachers Washington has be- come known as a school of high academic stand- ards. Patience and endurance by the staff has promoted a genuine love of knowledge which is present in the student body. Attributing to our fine staff are also those people who take care of all of the paperwork and records of the school as well as running the bookstore for the convenience of the students. The modern facilities in the school aid the process of knowledge greatly, such as the library, laundry, audio visual room, language lab and the cafeteria. The custodians do a fine iob in maintaining the cleanliness of the pool and gym- nasium as well as the large comfortable classrooms. The pool and gymnasium provide a place for stu- dents to develop physical abilities and stamina as well as providing places for social activities to take place in. The industrial arts department maintains modern facilities such as the auto shop, machine shop, and woods shop. Overall Washington has some of the most modern and extensive facilities in the community. . ,wise Y' at ,Q --1 Qi!! The desire to compete and prove that Washington is number one has always been foremost in the minds of every Panther. Whether it is a highly skilled game of basketball or a knock-down, rough and bruising football evenlt, it is executed for the glory of Washington High School. The State'Football Championship is a well-earned victory that was hard-fought for by our boys this year. Sometimes our opponents are bigger and tougher and are favored over the Panthers, but that makes little difference. The Panther Tradition is pride, spirit, and a never-ending battle to the finish. When the Panther team is down, the spirit they show to claw their way back to the top again is what Panther Pride and Washington High School is all about. The promotion of school spirit starts with the cheerleaders and they have the ability to infect the entire school with enthusiasm. The students give their minds, bodies, and souls to the support of the teams. Whether it is in a pep assembly, or at the actual game, everyone at Washington makes the Green Machine roll. The Big Green Machine rolled over their opponents with a score of 35-0. During the halftime ceremonies, the courts from the two schools were pre- sented to the crowd. It was at this time that the queen was announced. Miss Sandy Vanslager was our queen for the '69-'70 year. The nostalgia of this event was subordinate only to the excitement of meeting an- other foe in the game of basket- ball. There were eight girls sharing the honor of being on the Cen- tral court but, only one would ascend to the throne of the queen. The members of the court were selected by a vote of the Senior class. Miss Alice Jo Star, escorted by Rick Orban, was chosen queen of WHS basketball for '69-'7O. V4 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Juniors and Seniors who have outstanding qualities of leadership, character, scholar- ship, and service are eligible for membership in the National Honor Society, spon- sored by Miss Murphy. Students are first selected on the basis of their academic record and are then evaluated by the teachers on their other qualities. New members are now inducted at a dinner held for them and their parents instead of the former proce- dure of being called from the audience at an assembly held in the auditorium. Upon induction, the new members receive the highest academic honor that they can attain: becoming a member of a national society that honors those who serve their community. f, N.H.S. His wit and good nature will be missed but mostly we will be denied his hard work and dedication to educating our students that have marked his years at Washington. A man's life has been given but not forgotten. His thoughts and ideals live on in the hearts and minds of the students who have passed through the door of his room and on into life. His loyalty and dedication are shown through the pride with which he supervises the student body. Along with his assistant, Mr. Pilarski, he strives To gain a closer and more personal relationship with each of the students at Washington. The beginning artists learn the basic principles of drawing, printing and painting. Advanced artists have the opportu- nity to take part in a two hour studio art course that gives them the chance to explore areas of painting and ceramics which they wish to pursue. Student work is regularly rep- resented in the Scholastic Arts Contest which is initiated at a local level. Successful entries are submitted for judging in New York City. Washington ranks high regionally and nationally in this scholastic competition. In the area of music, Washington is proud of the fine Glee Club, Band, and Orchestra which is composed of many members of the student body. The Mellomen and Mello- ettes are a select group of students with outstanding talent, voices, and determination. Each year the Mellomen ioin the Melloettes as well as the Orchestra to present the annual Christmas and Easter programs. To keep up with this trend, there is an ever-increasing demand for persons skilled in secretarial and business work. Washington High School meets these demands by providing basic business education for students preparing for future employment in business. We have many points to our advantage in the Business Depart- ment. This past year more girls from Washing- ton participated in the Cooperative Education Program than any other school in the city. We are also the only school in the city that operates a shorthand lab. Students can choose up to forty different sections of business under the guidance of the ten teachers in this department to help him in whatever phase of business he wishes to choose for a career. Business Education is divided into two classes of goals of general objectives: vocational education and general education. The Business Department is con- cerned with the proper training in both areas. General Business Education provides the stu- dents with information and basic skills which are imperative for all in managing personal business. Any business course adds to the gen-' eral knowledge and is considered to be a general course if not pursued for more than one year. Business Education provides a way for all stu- dents to gain information relating to business and makes for an interesting career. sais-Q ,ss lsgi Q X This page: above: LYLE HARDING, above right: ROSEMARY IERACI, righf: SHARON HUGDAHL. English is the basis of all the other subiects taught at Washington and, therefore, must rank as the most important. lt is by English that almost every- thing one learns is taught, it is through English that we communicate. At Washington three years of English are required with a fourth year course offered as an elective. First year English is a gen- eral survey, second is American Literature and third is English Literature. The fourth year course includes the study of World Literature and 'a re- search paper aimed at college. The Home Economics Depart- ment strives to help all students achieve a satisfying personal, home and community life. The Foods Department has been busy this year entertaining business and community leaders who are guests at Washington every two weeks. These people come to look over our fine building and see how our studies and attitudes are combined to form one governing unit. A new course was offered this year for students interested in a fourth year of clothing. Knitting is one of the main projects of these students. They also learn how to upholster and make a basic pattern design which may: be helpful in their years to come as homemakers. The Home Economics Department builds a strong foun- dation for homemaking, parenthood, and good citizenship in our community. Washington is for- tunate to have such modern and complete facilities in this department. A-xx' ,aww .rw s. --sk .- , I2I all Mathematics is often called the second language of America. Math is the means of communi- cation in the technological world of which America is a leader. Students learn to reason to the best of their ability. Freshmen become acquainted with square roots, finding an unknown equa- tion and learning the quadratic formula. Even though algebra is learned, geometry brings even a better understanding of the mathematical world. Trigonom- etry and college algebra broaden our knowledge of fundamental things that are earlier learned. For the college bound student, mathematics is a necessity. The college prep course starts with algebra and geometry, and Washington's facilities allow you to go all the way to college calculus. The languages are taught in levels one through four with the exception of Russian. The Russian language program has been discon- tinued at La Salle making it necessary for several students to commute to our school daily to par- ticipate in the Russian program. For the first time students who have had French in Elementary and Junior High were enrolled as second year students. The language lab has served the students enorm- ously in the understanding of the various lan- guages. Students are able to hear native speakers and develop the important accents that are neces- sary for proper understanding of the language. Overall, we feel that Washington is the home of many fine teachers who are well versed in the art of teaching. The Physical Education Depart- ment provides physical growth and vigor through the development of such things as strength, power, and motor ability, along with the endurance to assure physical tit- ness. Physical soundness is also stressed in gym classes through exertion and exer- cise. Besides the ever popular varsity sports, the department holds intramural sports so that all can enjoy the triumphs and let downs, hard work and fun known to all athletes. An attractive pool and a large, well-lit gymnasium provide a pleas- ant environment for physical activity. Here the student learns many skills as he par- ticipates in exercises and drills. The variety of activities offered at Washington help to make physical education more than just a required course. This department also de- velops social traits and qualities that will make for an integrated personality, dis- playing leadership, competitive and co- operative spirit and sportsmanlike conduct. Rt Washington, our students become well- rounded individuals, physically as well as academically. N z Q ,mf V, 77 , ,h,V. Z, , W? ff., , 3 4 , ,, , ,,,. ,Mg,w,gW, 1, f f 1, . M ,N ,,.,,. Also offered is Physics, which deals with electricity, heat and energy. Addition- al courses are Physical Science, which is basic scientific study, and Chemistry, which deals with basic chemical elements and compounds. The purpose of this depart- ment is to encourage students to appreci- ate scientific method, theory, and also scientific achievements. The second pur- pose is to provide students with a means of fulfilling their requirements for future plans in college or technical programs, with at least one year being compulsory. SCIENCE Health Education at Washington aims to teach the aspects of one's health as he is affected physically, emotionally, mentally, socially, and spiritually, Through the use of films and film strips, as well as other educational literature, students enjoy visual pictures as well as learning the basic aspects of growth of mind, soul and body. During the year the classes take part in the traditional topics such as personal hygiene and proper eating habits. Issues such as physical fitness, teenage use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs, and sex edu- cation are discussed, as they deal with the person's understanding of his role in society. Many students participate in the driver's edu- cation program in which they learn the basic fundamentals of driving. The purpose of Industrial Arts is to expose students to industry and comsumer materials and to the unique pattern of human relationships to industry. Responsibil- ity is shown through first hand experiences with indus- trial materials, tools, processes, and organization through application. We seek to develop insight into the basic industries of our time as a basis for sound industrial development. The programs taught at Wash- ington are Woods, Metal Shop, Drafting, Vocational Drafting, and Auto Shop. WW Our nurse deserves much credit for the necessary role she plays in the physical welfare of the students. She is active in maintaining the excellent health facilities which are present at Washington. She deserves much praise for the necessary part she fulfills in the functioning of our school, and in the keeping of health records for each student. One of the most important positions at Washington is that of the speech teacher. Her iob is to assist those students who have speaking and hearing difficulties. She plays a very essential part in the correction of these two related problems and at the same time does her best to bolster the confidence of her students. NURSE ITI ITI x gs I .di L qs, 5k-vi. It is important that each student realizes the role that America plays in the whole system of world communities. The Social Studies instructors endeavor to impress this idea upon the future citizen. The freshman Social Studies course acquaints students with actual community problems and problems of human relations among people in every section of the world. SOCIAL STUDIES Juniors are required to complete a U.S. History course which pro- vides knowledge about the past Through the study of our Ameri- can Heritage. The Contemporary Society course is completed in the senior year. This government course familiarizes the students with the basic functions of de- mocracy at work. World History and Geography are elective courses which improve the un- derstanding of man in relation to his environment and world civilizations. N? i?W! The custodians here at Washington High School are some of the most important people we have. They are the ones who have to drop what they are doing at any time of the day and uniam a stubborn locker, replace a faulty light or fix a bent desk. Coach Roggeman returned to Purdue University, his alma mater, to become freshman coach. Washington will miss him. He was not only a great coach but a great man. His teams had tremendous spirit, determination, and pride. He instilled deep moral convictions in his players so that they might have strong character as future citizens. The torch has passed. Good luck, Coach Roggeman, our tradition will live on and you will not be forgotten.
