MISS MARILYN BAER Spanish, English FCREIG LA GLIAGES Latin and Spanish have been a vital part of the Washing- ton foreign language program for years, but now French, Ger- man, and Russian have become equally important. This year new courses in these languages have been added to the curriculum. The members ot the foreign language de- partment have used new text books as well as new tapes in the language laboratory to the benefit of all. First and second year students learn the grammar of the language, while third and tourth year students read and dis- cuss various well-known authors. With modern travel we are actually iust hours from the MRS. DORIS GOLDBERG French MR. JEROME HOFFMAN Russian, College Algebra, H.S. Math countries across the sea. It is essential that a basic under- standing develop between the nations. The only way to gain understanding is through study of customs, traditions and languages ot others. JAY MILLER Orchestra MUSIC Whether one specializes in vocal or instrumental music, the courses made available by our Music Department help an artist develop and use his talent to the fullest extent. The glee club, orchestra, band, and music appreciation courses provide a foundation for years of pleasure through music. Throughout the year the glee club presents various seasonal programs and entertains before civic groups. With the expert guidance of their instructors glee club members learn to project and pronunciate well, and to blend their voices together to create the inimitable sound of the Washington High School Glee Club. The orchestra and band departments offer musicians the opportunity to further develop skills in instruments they have played for years. For those who want to study the reasoning behind and the history of music, courses are offered in music apprecia- tion and harmony. Each department being prohcient in its field, results in expecting only the finest when they combine and concen- trate their efforts on common protects. These productions usually offer more enioyment than one experts and leave no doubt that Washington High School's music depart- ment is an important and worthwhile part of the school's educational system. 30
