ART MR. H. JAMES PARADIS MR MARION PILARSKI Studio Art, Ceramics Basic Art Commercial Art Man has created art that will live on forever. Generations have learned about the past through discoveries of ancient sculptures, wall murals, and buildings. On canvas and blocks of stone, the changing moods of generations have been de- picted so that new generations learn of the old world. Classroom artists learn the history of art and new break- throughs in the art field. Techniques in ceramics, sculptures, oils, and etchings are learned in order to create works of lasting beauty. Beginning artists learn the principles laid down by the old masters and innovating geniuses of today. Advanced artists have an opportunity to take part in a two-hour art course that caters to the talented. Works created in class are displayed in show cases located in the hallways. Visitors as well as the regular student body, enjoy the unique designs on display. Through studies in art, skills are learned that can be applied in a future career or in leisure time. Many young artists have their own studios at home where they can experiment ex- tensively with new ideas learned in the classroom. Prize win- ning works have been produced at Washington that have been named best in nation-wide contests. With encouragement and praise from teachers who are established artists in their own rights, aspiring young artists have contributed to the aesthetic values of their community and nation. 21

MR. PATRICK GULLIFOR Biology , cha Chix I MR. EARL T. HIBBS Biology SCIENC Any alumnus of the old building would be surprised at the size of Washington's modern science department with its ever-increasing en- rollment. The improvement of this department is a result of the great interest in science today. With the growth of science comes a better way of living and a new means of communication and travel. It is in the class- room that young scientists first acquire the knowledge they will need for future careers in this field. Chemistry, physics, and biology classes stress the basic principles of these various branches of science. Chemistry students learn about chem- icals and their reactions. Laboratory periods are quite popular since the text material becomes a reality with the use ot test tubes and chem- icals. Physics is the study of matter and energy. In the physics classroom problems are discussed and explanations written on every available board. Biology, the study of life, can involve both chemistry and physics. The chemistry of the body is greatly stressed and the principles ot physics are introduced in various aspects of biology. The science department has grown at Washington so that young scientists can have the best opportunity to develop their interests and skills. MR. LEONARD KAPSA Biology 'Fr .' lf. 'X . .5 Ms: pggg.
