As newcomers, in the 8th grade, they soon became adiusted to a strange building, many new faces, and a new way of learning. For a while they were content to remain obscure until their self-confidence returned. In the spring, Marian Abrams, Lorraine Haught, Ted Hammers, William Kellogg, and William Smith were sel- ected as American Legion medal winners on the basis of honor, scholarship, service, leadership, courage. The following September, initiated into the ranks as Freshmen, they began to mount the lad- der to high school achievement. They eagerly entered into all school activities-student coun- cil, club work, and athletic participation. As sophomores, they became more active- more interested in school life. Their social and educational growth was broadened through ex- tra-curricular activities which they had sampled as freshmen. The iunior class launched itself into a new life when it elected class oFficers-president, Gene Conklin, vice president, Albert Cummins, secretary, Gerry Dogg, and treasurer, Marian Henry. Here they established themselves as a capable group, for no class adviser was found, and the class went on its way, adviser-less. The first big event of their career was the Junior Prom, over which Ruth Burrell reigned as May Queen. With the beginning of their fourth year, the seniors took over the staFf positions on the Little Prexie and the Little President. Virginia Opoc- SENIORS zenski and Joan Snider acted as co-editors on the paper, while Jean Skillen, as editor-in-chief of the yearbook, and Mariorie Crosier, as her assist- ant, began making plans for the 1949 annual. Ted Hammers and Paul Harding took over the business records of the yearbook. In the class play The Case of the Laughing Dwarf the audi- ence was entertained by a mystery, which proved both amusing and confusing. ln May, Marlene Behner was elected to rule over the Junior Prom, with senior attendants, Martha Chicone, and Louise McClenathan. Climaxing the year's ac- tivities was the Senior Banquet. The class of T949 attained many high hon- ors in its final year. Arthur French and Louise McClenathan ranked first and second in a United Nations exam, and their papers were en- tered in national competition. Terry Syrek and John Morris represented the instrumental music department at Youngwood for district band, while Janice Hugi was selected as one of the soloists at State Chorus. Ted Hammers served as President of Student Council. After a hectic two-week senior vacation, they donned caps and gowns for graduation ex- ercises. With orations, seniors proved them- selves efficient public speakers. Gene Conklin, Arthur French, John Guyon, Ted Hammers, Louise McClenathan, Virginia Opoczenski, and Joan Snider were the Commencement speakers, and Norris Stephens entertained parents and guests with several piano selections, one being his own composition. And so, diplomas in hand, they faced the world equipped with a store of knowl- edge they had obtained through democratic schooling. Directed by J. Pepper Ellis of the John B. Rogers Company, this revue, presented March 24 and 25, was proclaimed the best ever presented by Wash High students. Among the musical selec- tions were the popular songs Buttons and Bows , Far Away Places , Lavender Blue , and A Little Bird Told Me . Orchestration was handled by the High School Band, with Marlene Behner as accompanist. The colorful costumes of the past intermingled with the present-day costumes added to the attractiveness of the show. The Second Act, in the form of a circus, starred Arthur French as ringmaster. There were barkers and clowns, vendors, wrestlers, mental marvels, weight litters, evn the intelligent horse -all that goes to make up a real circus. Soloists in the different scenes included: Vernon Bradley, Vincent Cancelmi, Reed Drauc- ker, Clara Fidelman, Joan Fox, Betty Griest, Jan- ice Hugi, Shirley Klinzing, Martha McCann, Ro- maine McDonald, Kenneth Mollenauer, Frederick Preston, Alice Spriggs, and Alma Zenner. Seated: Scott, Fidelman, York, Behner A new type of Senior Play was introduced to the public of Washington this year. It was a mystery entitled The Case of the Laughing Dwarf. A most interesting and thrilling detec- tive mystery, it was directed by Gaylord Hart- man. This was the type of play where complica- tion piles on complication with bewildering rapid- ity, until you begin to wonder how the snarl can ever be untangled--the type that keeps you guessing land guessing wrongl until the last breath-taking moment. The Case of the Laughing Dwarf is a three- act mystery which takes place in a rustic hotel called the Laughing Dwarf. Within a short time this ancient hotel, about to close because of finan- cial difficulties, is turned into a mad house. Its owner finds business rushing when the hotel is visited by a munitions king and his attractive wife, a doctor and his nurse, a mysterious young man and woman, and two detectives. As the legend goes, when the Dwarf laughs, a murder is committed. When this occurs, things begin to happen left and right, and never let up until the final curtain. The action is fast paced, but not morbid, and the comedy parts, taken by the Inspector, the chambermaid, the cook, and Wing, add much to the interest of the play.
