RUTH WVEGE THE SENIUR CLASS We are the Class of 1948-this is our class, this has been our year. We, as a class, have traveled along the same road for Iive vears now. Some of us have gathered many honors along the way, others only a few. We've worked on dance committees, class committees, we've sung in as- semblies together, we've had parties together, weive gone to a hundred and one sports events together, we,ve gone to dances together, weive watched the transition in one another from the time we were little Sth graders-awed at the greatness of our building-to the present time. Now, we were the Seniors. This was a little difficult to realize at first, for we felt no older and not very much wiser, but now we were the 9.0 Senior leaders, and four classes were looking to us to follow. So we did our best to be leaders. Again this Senior idea hifi us-for we were doing so many things for the last time, our last class, our last pep assembly, our last football game, our last Spring play. Then the last minute rush of writing final papers--last tests-and the bliss of Senior vacation. Then we were together as a class for the last time as we marched proudly up to where Mr. Knestrick, President of our Board of Education, handed us our diplomas with congratulations. VVe walked back to our seats. NVe smiled a wistful but happy smile. VVe were the Senior Class of 1948. SENIURS GLASS 0F 1948 MITCHELL ABBAS-- Mitch . . . Ambition-Airplane inecli- f anim . . . Our day of glory came when Mr. Lowry gave the green light for us to organize and elect our class leaders. For president We chose Eugene Conklin. Albert Cummins as vice-president, Gerry Dagg, secre- tary, and Marian Henry, treasurer, completed the list as officers for this illustrious class, which points to the best in classes yet to be graduated. Through our participation in class and school activities, Welre trying to make that statement ring true. Through the efforts of our otlicers, we have become more than a group of students who hap- 48 pen to graduate in the same year. VVe have become an important unit-pulling together and having fun doing so. Our first aim Was to establish a sizable bank account. We became money mad. We sold pop, potato chips, candy, and hot dogs to make this possible. Our next addition to the bank account was the junior Prom--at which event we elected a May Queen. ltis been a busy year, and one which We of the Junior Class will always remember as being closely linked with our happiness as students of VVash High. George Barlow, Prexie catcher, sparked the hitters with an average of .468 while compiling a total of 165 putouts for the season. Fine per- formances must also be credited to Ivan Forgie, outlielder, Glade Eakin, outfielder, and Don Wines, who despite a slow start, finished the season with a show of timely base hits. A further highlight of the season was the signing of Bill Craig by the Pittsburgh Pirates Professional Baseball Club. He is to report to one of their minor leagues for spring training, and it is certain that the school and townspeople as Well will be wishing him the best of luck and continued success. Dunn 71 FUOTBALL SUMMARY As the cooling breezes of September swept across the athletic field, Coach Hank Day issued his call for football candidates. Approximately 230 boys responded. Equipment was given out, and in a few days the booming thud of punts and the systematic count of future gridders going through their calisthenics echoed across the field. In a few short weeks Coach Day and his assistants had moulded a squad of gridmen who were to carry the Blue and Black colors through a gruel- ing ten-game schedule. Wash High opened the 1947 season against the Canonsburg Gunners and humbled them by a score of 13 to 7. Lahosky threw the winning pass to Sorice, and Frye split the uprights for the final score of the game. But our victory was short-lived For the next week, the power-laden Monessen team snap- ped the winning streak by a 20-0 victory over the Little Prexies. With a record crowd of 13,000 cheering fans looking on, Washington came from behind in the last quarter to edge our crosstown cou- sinsn, the Trinity Hillers, 20 to 15, at the Stadium, September 19. Hank Day,s little Presidents, with nine points scored by Trinity in the first 30 sec- onds of the game, struck back in the first quarter with 7 points. Later touchdowns by VVatson and Frye brought the score to 20 and a second victory for Wash High. The next week found the Daymen journey- ing to Monongahela where the under-rated Wild Cats clawed out a 13 to 6 victory at the expense of Wash High. Still feeling the sting from the Monongahela upset, the Little Prexies played host to McKees- port. The Tubers started a touchdown parade early in the first quarter, and the final whistle showed a score of 61 for the Tubers and 7 for the Little Presidents. For the next encounter, the Daymen traveled to Charleroi where they fell victim to a blitz- kriegf, Unleashing hidden power, the Charleroi team rolled over the Wash High team by a score of 33 to 6. Friday, October 17 found the Little Prexies boarding a bus for a trip to Erie East. Striking early in the game, the Daymen sported a margin at the conclusion of the first half, but were un- able to hold the lead down and went down to de- feat at the hands of Erie East,18 to 14. Old Man Defeat still sat on the Blue and Black bench, for a powerful Brownsville eleven held the Daymen to a virtual standstill-with their passing attack netting them 4 touchdowns, and making the score 41 to 0. Donora was our sixth straight set-back when the strong machine of the River Bats began to roll, for they outplayed the Blue and Black to the tune of 39 to 13. Not even the cold spraying drizzle prevented the Wash High fans from enjoying the last game of the season with Mt. Lebanon, for Lady Luck smiled upon the Daymen. The field was very wet, but by utilizing a passing offense. Wash High came to the fore in the final quarter to tie the 6'Mounties', 7 to 7. For their services under the Blue and Black banner on the gridiron 22 varsity gridders were rewarded with the VV,'. Among this group were 18 seniors who hung up their cleats. Honors came to Wash High gridders, for Ioe Nicolella and Doon VVatson were chosen on the sports scribes annual second team, All Big Six, an honor well deserved by both of them. Joe Nicolella was listed among the honorable men- tion of the Post Gazette, All VVPIAL teams. The record shows that Bill Frye made 9 out of 13 placements attempted this year. One would have to travel away back to find a Wash High man kicking this many extra points. Opening against Connellsville on the home Hoor, Coach Laughlinis Little Prexies got off to a good start with a 45-30 victory over the Cokers. The first defeat of the season came when the Laughlin men ran up against a powerful Donora team in the latteris gvm. When the final whistle blew, the score stood 50-28 in favor of Donora. The next five games with Waynesburg, Mon- essen, Charleroi, Irwin, and the Alumni proved the real worth of the team, for YVash High em- erged victorious in all five contests. Going into league competition, the first game with Dormont on the home court was won in an overtime period by a 46-42 score. Brentwood, the next opponent, proved too much for the Little Prexies, however, for the tall lads from Brent- wood administered the third defeat of the season -56-25. Ianuarv 27 found almost the entire student body crowded into the Trinity Qvm for the first of a two-game series with the Hillers. Seesaw- ing back and forth for four periods, with the lead changing hands 13 times, Trinity came out the victor by a 45-44 count. Playing a return game with Dormont on the Dormont court, Wash Higlfs squad again proved its superiority with an easy 41-24 win, only to drop the next game to the towering Brentwood team 51-35. Hot for revenge for their previous defeat at the hands of the Trinity five, the Laughlin quintet met the Hillers on the Wash High floor, and out- passed and out-played them to take a 49-31 vic- tory from their rivals. This was the final game of the season. Marion Levers, a junior, was high point man for the season with 230 points, followed by jim Decker, a senior center with 214. Bill Simpson, also a junior, was third with 172. Missing from next seasonis line-up will be the three seniors-jim Decker, Paul Frye, and Harry Haas. Deckeris and F ryeis ability to take the ball off the bankboards and Haas, clever ball handling will not be easy to replace. The all-sophomore reserve squad, after los- ing three of their first five games, picked up steam and won the next 17 games to end the season with 19 wins and 3 losses. These boys earned a lot of credit for their scrappiness and adept passing ability. Kenneth Liggons was leading scorer with 163 points, followed bv Charles Thomas with 161, and George Dean with 111. The starting team consisted usually of Liggons, Dean, Knestrick, and Moore, with Cain and Balent coming in for their share of playing. Back for varsity competition next year will be four lettermen: Bick, Levers, Malone, and Simpson, with two other boys-Connelly and Henry fighting for positions. This situation, with all the reserve team being juniors next year, should lead to keen rivalry for starting positions on the varsity. QNV. H. ' 5 yr 'X xi., 77 WRESTLING SUMMARY The Washington High School wrestling team this season realized the dream of all coaches when it completed a 13-match schedule with an undefeated, untied record. From the very start i'Doc,, Harris, wrestling mentor, took an optim- istic view of the season, for with eight lettermen from last year plus capable substitutes, the out- look was good. The opening match with Iefferson in the WVash High gym brought the first victory. Then followed four matches with Waynesburg, Char- tiers, Jefferson, and Trinity--all aawayi' matches, and all keeping the winning streak intact for the Little Prexies. Next came the meet with Canonsburg in the Wash High gym before a crowd of 1600. This was a thriller, not decided until the final match, and annexed the XV ash High grapplers their first victory over the Gunners. The big feature of the evening was lack Churchis amazing defensive battle against Canonsburg's 165-pound WPIAL titlist, Addis. Church, who weighed only 127 pounds, brought rounds of applause from the crowd, who realized the weight difference and jackis struggle for victory. February 6 took the wrestlers to Greensburg where they made it seven in a row with a 14-3 victory. Tony Gizoni carried his feud with Bill Grim into the fourth year and came out the win- ner by a fall. Ianni and Petronka also scored pins. In a return match with Trinity, WVashington demonstrated power in the heavier weights to top the Allison-coached matmen by a score of 10-5. Funk and Ianni registered falls in this meet be- tween the two schools. Petronka, Gizoni, and Lahosky provided the victory of 10-6 over Waynesburg in the next con- test. All three succeeded in pinning their oppon- 78 ents, before an enthusiastic crowd in the Wash High gym. Winning every match, the Little Prexies an- nexed a 16-0 victory at the expense of East Pike Run, for the 11th victory of the season. Three falls were recorded by Young, Laurine, and La- hosky. The Canonsburg gym was the scene of the return match with the Gunners. Competition was keen, but the final gong showed VV ash High the winner by a count of 12 to 7. Falls were sco1'ed by Gizoni, Wilson, and Lahosky. March 2 brought the final match of the wrest- ling season, and with it the 13th straight victory for the Wash High grapplers. The Little Presi- dents turned back the Sawhill team 15-4 with five falls and Eve decisions. Miller decisioned Seamon for the latteris first loss of the season, a feat performed also by Lahosky, who pinned pre- viously unbeaten Trombetta. Climaxing the season was the WPIAL Wrest- ling Tournament, staged in the Wash High gym on March 5 and 6. Miss Thelma Ritchie, a sen- ior, was chosen Queen of the Tournament, and with her attendants-Io Ann F ox, Alma Zenner, Shirley Chipps, and Ienene Stahlberg, reigned over the Saturday night finals. Farrell and Wash- ington tied as winners of the WPIAL Tourna- ment, with four of the Blue and Black entries-- Gizoni, Miller, Funk, and Laurine becoming the representatives of Wash High at the state finals at Kingston. A variety of subjects were used as topics for meetings: co-ed discussions, relig- ious discussions, and etiquette. The programs included guest speakers, covered dish suppers, a weiner roast at Camp Adelawan, and in the spring, a banquet to honor the members of the club who were in the graduating class. The club participated in the animal Christmas for- mal, and in all the activities planned and con- ducted by the Inter-Club Council. The pur- pose of this club, as of all Y-Teen Clubs is: To face life squarely, to Find, and to give the bestf, The enrollment of the club is 145 mem- bers, consisting of llth and 12th grade girls. They meet Wednesday evenings at the Y. W. C. A. EIGHTH GRADE Y-TEENS The Eighth grade Y group meets the first and third Tuesday of each month after school at the Y, under the capable leadership of Miss Doris McNary. This active group, interested in raising money, sold Christmas cards and sachets. Their activities included a Weiner roast at the Washington Park, a swimming party at the Y, and an educational series, con- ducted by ministers of WVashington on the sub- ject of religion. NINTH GRADE Y-TEENS This Y group has as its purpose, the en- richment of the cultural, spiritual, physical, and mental welfare of the teen-age girl. VVith Miss Eliza Grable as sponsor, their activities included swimming and bowling parties, group meetings with guest speakers, and dis- cussions. This club, interested in making money for their contribution to the new Y. W. Camp, and also to the International organiza- tion of Y-Teens, sold Christmas cards and sachets. At Christmas time, they prepared baskets of food for needy families. TENTH GRADE Y-TEENS The theme of the Sophomore Y-Teens is Me, Myself, and Othersf, They meet at the Y on Tuesday afternoons, for interesting meet- ings, planned by the club program chairman, Joanne Ross. Plans for raising money includ- ed a bake sale. This group is sponsored by Miss Dorothy Bryson. MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLUB This club, sponsored by Miss Teresina Marino, was organized for the purpose of cre- ating interest in the languages and peoples of other countries. Its membership is open to both French and Spanish students, and meet- ings are held once a month. The program sometimes centers around the world situation, or it may consist of a game or skit in French or Spanish. The Christmas meeting included groups of songs sung in both languages. A fiesta is being planned for the late spring. GO-TO-COLLEGE CLUB Membership in the Go-To-College Club is open to all senior high school students who are interested in education beyond the high school level. Through talks by the graduates of different colleges, and programs prepared by the club members, various aspects of col- lege life are presented. The Clubis purpose is to encourage its members to pursue higher education, to prepare them for better partici- pation in college life, and to arouse and main- tain interest in college training among stu- dents who might not otherwise go to college. This year, the Go-To-College Club of VVashington High School, in cooperation with the other Go-To-College clubs of the city, helped to sponsor the annual Christmas dance, the proceeds of which will provide a scholar- ship to the Seminary Junior College for a worthy student from one of the cityis high schools. 87 SORORES CLUB The Sorores Club, organized in 1932, is the oldest club in the Washington High School. The qualifications for membership are: excellence of character, ability in leader- ship, willingness to serve the school, and stu- dious attitude toward class work. Miss Lena Lively has been the Sorores adviser since the clubis organization. The seven senior members, reinforced by twenty-three new ones began the year by sell- ing greeting cards at the Teachers, Institute, but the clubis major project was the donating and wrapping of Christmas gifts for the Chil- drenis Home. SKETCH AND CRAFT CLUB At least one place in the school, beauty and perfection walk hand in hand-the art room. It is there that students meet after school to study painting, designing, carving, and work with plastics. It is there they learn the proper ways to blend colors in harmony. Under the helpful suggestions of Miss Flor- ence Van Nostrand, the Sketch and Craft Club of Wash High find adequate expression for their talents. The 48 members of the club are eager to learn to make beautiful things with just a few graceful strokes of the brush. Money is being earned for materials by the sale of Alma Mater pencils and by spon- soring after-school dances. LIBRARY CLUB The Library Club under the direction of Miss Zara Siegel, buys books, supplies, and equipment for the library, and maintains a staff of eighteen Librarians as well as Library monitors. School librarians, duties vary from admitting pupils to the library to dusting books and shelves. They also check library slips, aid students unable to find material, and mark the cards of those who wish to borrow books. The funds for the club are raised by oper- ating the concession in the lunch room, at bas- 88 ketball games, and at the Teachers, Institute. The thirty members of the club are planning an authoris birthday calendar and a book of local celebrities. W CLUB The Varsity Club is an organization of boys who have earned a letter in some sport. For the past nine years the club has aimed to promote friendship, loyalty, and cooperation among the athletes of Wash High. The mem- bers of the club work to furnish money to pro- vide sweaters for all who have won varsity letters in competition. KEY CLUB The Key Club is a newly organized club at Wash High, which is composed of boys from grades 10, 11, and 12. To become a member, you must rank in the upper third of your class scholastically, be of good character, and be a willing worker in order to improve yourself, your school, and your community. The objectives of the group are: to de- velop initiative and leadership, to provide ex- perience in living and working together, to serve the school and community, to cooperate with the school faculty, and to prepare for useful citizenship. The club is sponsored by the local Kiwanis Club, with Dr. William A. Harris, Ir. as adviser. USHER CLUB May I help you, sir? Right this way, pleasef, And so another student service mem- ber guides a stranger to the proper seat at a football game, a basketball game, a wrestling match, a band concert, a play, a Commence- ment exercise, and every other activity that takes place at the WVashington High School. The Usher Club has 65 members, consist- ing of students of the junior and senior classes. Members are voted into the club on the basis of their scholastic rating, leadership, and will- ingness to take part in school activities. For the past four years, it has had as its objectives- the development of student responsibility, initia- tive, leadership, school pride, and pupil partici- pation or management of extra-curricular activi- ties. The Council consists of a representative from each of the thirty-eight homerooms who meet every two weeks. Acting as an advisory board to the President, is the Executive Board. This board consists of the four officers and the chairmen of the six com- mittees. Members of the Executive Board are: Mike Sorice, James Funk, Alice Dubelle, Virginia Douglas, Gloria Casper, Robert Gvozden, Robert Laurine, Robert Vanek, Nick Demas, and john Lahosky. Leading this organization since its beginning is Paul Kratt, who has done an excellent job. Besides keeping the wheels of the regular Wash High activities in smooth working condi- tion, Student Council sponsors the publication of the hand book, the purchase of new records for the school, decorations for the Christmas season, the sale of magazines, and in general all functions that affect the student body. LITTLE PRESIDENT STAFF The Little President, the student newspaper, is the voice of the students, and in a sense the spirit of high school life. Taking the Little Presi- dent and the work that goes into each issue for granted is an easy thing to do. There were stories to write, layout to make, copy to proof, and a hundred and one other little details that go into putting out a newspaper. There were ads to be solicited, finances to keep straight, and subscriptions to be secured. But the Staff was a competent one, and the policies of the Editor were carried out. STUDENT OPERATORS' STAFF The S. O. S. Club was organized in 1945 for the purpose of operating all audio-visual educa- tion equipment for the student body. It has a membership of sixteen students who show all films to the various classes of the Washington High School, play records at after-school dances, and keep our public address system in top condi- tion. IUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL CHORUS This year with the addition of a new vocal music instructor at WVash High, a junior High School Chorus of 100 voices was organized. Since its beginning in October of 1947 this group of boys and girls has presented programs before the Democratic Women's Council, the Current Events Club, Washington County Pomona Grange, and in cooperation with the other vocal and instrumental groups of the school, the Christ- mas assembly program. MIXED CHORUS The Mixed Chorus, under the directorship of Mrs. Etha MCC. Richardson, was reorganized this fall. This group, composed of students in the Senior High School, must have been enrolled in a junior choral group before being admitted to Mixed Chorus. They have presented several musical programs to the student body. Accom- panists are Lois Bigler, Marjorie Burig, and LaGene Day. JUNIOR CHORUSES The Junior choruses-both girls and boys- are all underclass students, selected for their in- terest in group singing. Both groups assisted in making the Christmas program a success. Accompanists for these groups are: Betty Hum- phries, Martha Clarke, and Patricia Dillard. 93 DUR STUDENT DRGANIZATIUNS Little President Staff Student O erators Stall P Xlilllilglllg Editors , ,. . Every eye follows the blue and gold uni- formed band as it steps lively up and down the field, weaving in and out of intricate maneuvers with startling precision. The band is a feature attraction of WVashington High Schoolis entire music course, Once each year the band presents a com- plete program itself, when students heartily ap- plaucl the rendition of classical and semi-classical selections, indicating they, too, have captured some of the satisfaction arising from the culture of the ages. The Washington High School Band was organized in the fall of 1927 by its present direc- tor, Paul E. Harding. Since its beginning, it has attempted to maintain high musical standards. This year it received new uniforms which con- tributed to the excellent shows at the football games last fall. The radio and press both at home and away praised the WVash High Band as one of the outstanding musical and marching outlits in the district. This was emphasized when the band was awarded first prize in the Armistice Day parade at Charleroi. The annual concert was built around thc twentieth anniversary theme. Band alumni, of which there are now approximately 500, expect to celebrate with a reunion and banquet some- time in the spring. 103 -'villvwy 515511 OR ffm v4' Lfziffswwad JUNIOR afby .Qi 9' ' M 3OPHOM wwf WEIBN ATIBNDAN 'rs I Q-48 'fl . ff1'ffA?'l'5zii!f EIGHTH GRADE --QT' EKG!-1 'IH CDR-'ADB Qlfwiiiwgfn Hs ma? x . Betty Smith Beverly Harter Fred Andy Beauty and the Beef A Beauty and the Beefv was presented November 25 by the members of the Senior Class under the direction of Gaylord Hartman. The play is a three-act comedy about the Allen family. Ginny, their daugh- ter, finds herself and her friends involved in many amusing incidents. Through- out the play one hilarious situation follows another until matters seem utterly helpless. Ginny has inixups with her ideal football hero, her family, her teachers, and her neighbors, which get her into situations that take a lot of explaining. There is a laugh in every line. Queen for a Day Queen for a Dayv, the second play presented by the Class of 1948 was given April 23. Based on the hilarious stage version of the radio program of the same name, this play brought to the audience a little of what actually takes place on the regular program in Hollywood. Ronald Jacobs was cast as jack Bailey, with Hve senior girls serving as candi- dates for the title of Queen. The introduction of each candidate, the final selec- tion of the Queen by the Ladies of the Grand Council, and an amusing mix-up in identities, all made this one of the best Senior plays p1'oduced at Wash High. This was definitely a different type comedy, and thoroughly enjoyed for its humor and originality. ,. Paul Beck Virginia Knox Ellen Smith Jean Fetherlin Carmine DiVincenzo Marilyn Morris .. To these, the staff Wishes to give its sincere thanks for the work they have done and the headaches and Worries they have saved us. First, our thanks to Mr. James R. MacVVilliams of the Iahn and Ollier Engraving Company, who has helped with suggestions about our theme and with our engravings. Then there is Mr. Wfalter VVyant of Kurtz Bros. who helped put our theme on paper. Mr. Hon Christman, lr., our smiling photographer, made his time our time, and spent many trying hours getting our candid and group shots as We wanted them. Mrs. John Harlmaugh took our Senior picturesg Charles Arnold furnished us with the front cover photograph and the air view of our schoolg our faculty collected the money for suhscriptions. All these and many more have aided in the production of this yearls hook-and the thanks and recognition given here is onlv too inadequate for the help they have given to the 1948 Little Prexie.
