CLASS HISTORY As we, the June Class of 1939, step from the merry-go-round of school life, ready for the walk into the great world, we take time to look back over the five happy years spent in Washington High School. Our thoughts first wander back to a fine day in September, 1934, when a group of about two hundred young boys and girls gathered from all parts of the city, were divided into groups, and put under the supervision of capable teachers. It was at the end of this first year that we were called upon, as a whole, for our first undertaking-to choose the outstanding boy and girl in our class, but finally the honors were bestowed upon Grace McKinney and William Headley. The next two years were spent in making new friends and becoming better ac- quainted with the school, until finally, in 1937, having become Juniors and feeling the need of leadership and action, we elected class officers, making William Headley, president, Dan Paul, vice president, Mary Ellen Langenbacher, secretary, and Anna Carozza, treasurer. We selected Miss Susan Maxwell as class adviser and chose as our class colors those of the rainbow. Feeling very proud of ourselves, we made up our minds to make the rest of the school sit up and take notice. On November 5, 1932, we sponsored, as our first entertaimnent, a unique Foot- Ballv and on the last Friday in April, 1938, we combined our efforts with those of the Junior Bfs and presented the annual Junior Prom. At this time our president crowned the May Queen, Helen Baumgardner, whose two Junior attendants were Nellie Anne Clutter and Mary Ellen Langenbacher. We entered other social activities, determined to outdo the preceding classes, and our participation in all the clubs and other affairs shows we have not failed. Our class produced more than its share of artists, debaters, and athletes. As Senior B's, we again tried our hand at entertaining by giving the Senior A,s a banquet at the Second Presbyterian Church. The presentation of our senior play, Stage Door, brought our class into the lime- light. The leading parts were all well handled by Nellie Anne Clutter, Lois' Durbin, Marjorie McAfee, Frank Rush, and Frank Richmond. As our last assembly in Washington High School, Move-Up Day was held May 24. The key oration was carried out by our vice president, Dan Paul, and Frank Long, president of the Senior B Class. Awards were made to members of the band and public recognition was given to boys who had won athletic awards. The officers presented each member of the class with a pin. At a Prom held by the Junior Class on May 51, Mary Ellen Langenbacher was crowned May Queen. As a climax to our pleasant, if somewhat strenuous years in Washington High School, the Commencement Dance was held at the George Wzisliington Hotel. And now, as We stand ready to step into tl1e world, it is only fitting that we should express our thanks and gratitude to those who have helped make our days pleasant and memorable. --BETTY BAKER BAND The VVashington High School Band during the concert season of the second se- mester demonstrated its ability as a thoroughly trained musical organization. The Zllllluill band concert proved to be an outstanding feature of the year,s work. The band played for the annual Gym Exhibition to bring to a close its musical calendar for the year. A ORCHESTRA This year's orchestra after a slow rebuilding program in the first semester devel- oped into an outstanding musical unit. The organization played for many of the school programs during the year, including the Memorial Day program presented in the school auditorium before an audience ot' students and parents. MIXED CHORUS The Vocal Department includes Junior Girls' Chorus, Junior Boys' Chorus, Sen- ior Girls, Chorus, and Mixed Chorus. Witliin these groups is included Girls, En- semble, Girls' Trio, and Boys' Quartet. Each group has contributed much in bringing recognition to VVashington High School through participation in the social tllld civic activities of the community. BOYS' QUARTET The Boys' Quartet is one ol' the outstanding musical groups ot' the school and has contributed much in service to the community in cluo, church, and social pro- grams. The quartet composed of Walter Ullom, first tenorg Jack McVehil, second tenor, Donald Rathbone, first bass, and George Paul, second bass, Won second place in the Wzisliingtoii County Forensic League Contest, and the rating of 'texcellentw in the Ohio Valley Music Festival in which they were guest participants. GIRLS' TRIO The Girls' Trio has taken part in numerous social, club, and church programs, and was awarded first place in Washington County Forensic League Contest, April 5g third place in the Sectional Contest, April 18, and superior rating in the Ohio Valley Music Festival. T The trio is composed of Merle Baker, first sopranog Florence Mathieson, second soprano, and Betty Jane Graham, alto. t ALPHA Hl-Y The Alpha Hi-Y Club is made up of a selected group of' Senior boys. The pur- pose of the club is to create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and com- munity, high standards of' Christian character. The officers are: President, Robert Reese, vice president, David Wilsoiig secre- tary, James Rick, treasurer, Frank Rush. SENIOR GIRL RESERVES The purpose of the Senior Girl Reserve Club is striving for the best. The club, a department of' the Young Wo1ne11's Christian Association, has enjoyed many activities this semester under the advisorship of Miss Rutherford and Miss Floto, Y. W. C. A. Girl Reserve secretary. This yearis officers are: Mary Ellen Langenbacher, president, Patricia Conley, vice president, Charlotte Allen, secretary, Grace McKinney, treasurer. SORORES CLUB J The members of' the Sorores Club are a selected group of Junior and Senior girls chosen on the basis of' outstanding qualities of character, service, and leadership. The purpose of the club is service to the school and to the community. Under the leadership of Betty Grace Love, Charlotte Goldfarb, and Doris Ann Smith, as president, vice president, and secretary respectively, and advised by Miss Lena Lively, the group has enjoyed such activities as an Easter Breakfast, a Mother's Day Tea, and a program for Senior members. VARSITY A The varsity UWT' Club, organized in September of 1938, is one of the most active clubs of the school. lts officers for the past year have been: President, Dan Paul, vice president, Clyde Davis, secretary, James Fuller, treasurer, Arthur Sandusky. The membership of this club is made up entirely from boys who have woI1 letters in varsity competition in the various sports of the school. The main purpose of the club is to furnish letter sweaters to its graduating members for the sports in which they have participated. Mr. Amos is the very competent adviser of' this group. GO-TO-COLLEGE . The Go-To-College Club is comprised of Seniors, Juniors, and Sophomores who have an average of C or above and are interested in continuing their education after graduating from Washiiigton High School. The year's officers are: President, Anna Carozza, vice president, Betty Baker, secretary, Anne Wariie, treasurer, Betty Thistlethwaite, program chairman, Florence Lombardo. Miss Dorothy Lewis is the adviser. ' CLASSICUM CONCILIUM Advisersz' Miss Bartlett, Miss Lively, Miss Siegel. . Officers: Consul, Patricia Conley, Scriba, Esther Morris. Roman Dinner, planned for May 18 with Roman style and dress. The purpose of this club is to acquaint the students with the manners and cus- toms of' the Romans and their effect on Roman civilization. GAMMA Hl-Y The newly organized Gamma Hi-Y, the first colored organization i11 the history of Washington High School, was created to maintain high Christian ideals and take an active part in school events. lt now has a membership of 30 and is finishing the school season by holding a Youth Conference, June 15, which approximately 200 youths from this district will attend. 1 The club officers are: President, Howard Wasler, vice president, James Ken- nedy, secretary, Melvin Richards, treasurer, Fred Giles. . 3 nu ' MAY QUEEN The highlight of W2lSl1lHgiOl1 High Schoolis social events was the crown- ing of Mary Ellen Langenbacher, Senior A, as the school's fourth May Queen, at the annual Junior Prom. After much suspense as to who would receive this coveted honor, Miss Langenbacher was chosen on the basis of personality, popularity, scholarship, and beauty. They rounded into shape amazingly fast and reeled off five straight victories before once tasting defeat, this at the hands of Trinity. Starring on the inound for the Little Prexies were Bert Miles and Roy Shilling with Earl Miller doing the catching. Wliile the season was not a success in the matter of winning percentages the team did a fine job considering the brief training season they had. Giles, Marincov, thc Paul Brothers, Pettit, and 'Ward were the standouts of the squad. The season was climaxed by participation in the W. P. I. A. L. meet held in Pittsburgh. l 4 BASKETBALL Wasliiiigtoii High School presented to district fans the outstanding basketball team in the entire history ot' the school during the 1938-39 season. The team Won 2.4 consecutive games, the longest Winning streak in the entire state for the year. Teams were played from three states, indicating the caliber of their opponents. After Winning Section II of the W. P. I. A. L. for the third consecutive year, VVashington then entered the climinations for the W. P. I. A. L. championship. In the quarter-finals the team eliminated a strong McKees Ptocks quintet. In the semi- finals with Homestead the team put on one ot' the most thrilling games ever Wit- nessed in the Pitt Stadium. W3SlllIlgtOI1 started strong and built up an early lead but this was whittled to a one-point lead by halt'-time. In the third quarter, Homestead rallied and grabbed the lead and Were comfortably ahead at the start ot' the final stanza.
