Principal What makes a high school great? Some say that a great high school is one that has splendid buildings, spacious, Well equipped rooms and a formidable athletic plant. Others say that a superior faculty is the key to greatness of a high school. A third group of people maintain that successful athletic teams and superior musical organizations make a school great. As the principal of Washington High School, l am convinced that she is truly a great insti- tution, in spite of a very mediocre physical plant, and a very average recent athletic record. l agree with those who say that a superior faculty is necessary to greatness and Washington does have a superior faculty. However, a superior faculty, in my opinion is but one of several factors that make for an outstanding high school. Nearly everyone forgets about students when evaluating a high school. It is my conten- tion that students, by their attitudes, form the real key to greatness. Behind students are cooperative, hard working, sincere parents and if many of those parents also attended the same school, so much the better. This brings us to the matter of tradition and past records, scholastic, athletic and musical. Washington has all the ingredients for greatness that really count. She has a long and honorable history of excellence in academic, athletic and musi- cal accomplishment. She has a devoted faculty who are proud to be associated with a fine old school. She has loyal, cooperative parent groups who encourage and support the school in all its endeavors. Large numbers of these parents are graduates of this school as Well. She has students who are proud of her traditions and who are jealous of her good name among all high schools. Washington is a great high school! MR. HAROLD YORK, Principal
