Washington High is fortunate inhaving a sister school located inPortland's sister city, Sapporo which is on Hokkaido, the northern most island of the Japanese Archipelago. This school is Sapporo South High. The Sapporo Committee was organized ln the spring of 1959 and this year it has carried on some of the activities of the previous year such as entertaining guests and giving assemblies. This spring the Sapporo Committee was instrumental inbringing to Washington High, Miss Yumi Ida, San Juan Capistrano's American Field Service Exchange Student from Sapporo South High School. Numerous activities were planned in honor of Yumi including a spontaneous welcome at the Airport by the City of Portland Officials and the students of Washington, a television interview, a tea at the Rickett's, dinner at the Bush Gardens, a tea and style show, acoiee hour for Yumi and many different city dignitaries, a banquet at the HillaVilla, a Girls League assembly, a pot luck dinner by the Executive Council, a Cotton and Cord dance, and finally a gift giving ceremony at the train depot as Yumi and her foster parents, the Hankys, left for San Juan Capistrano.
