Linus Pauling, Ph. D. , Sc. D. , L. H. D. , U. J. D. , D. H. C. , D. F. At , Nobel Laureate Chemistry We dedicate the Lens of '59 to all the Colonials who have trod the halls of Washington High School in pursuit of the knowledge which helped themto attain their rightful places in society. We, humbly yet proudly, make this dedication in particular to the most outstand- ing Nobel Prize-wixming scientist, humanitarian, and author, our own beloved Dr. Linus Pauling, who personifies our highest ideals . Dr. Pauling learned the fundamentals of chemistry at Washington High School under the direction of Mr. William Green, Harvard grad- uate and former Lens adviser, now deceased. Professor Linus Pauling, Chairman of the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, California Institute of Technology since 1937, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 1954 and awards in the fields of chemistry, medicine, and international law boo numerous to list. In addition to earning his Ph. D. where he is now a professor, he has been given.honorary doctorates by fifteen universities, including Chicago, Princeton, Yale, Cambridge, Oxford, London, Paris, X Leige and Montpellier. He has won the Pres- idential Medal for Merit for exceptionally meritorius conduct in the performance of outstanding service to the United States froml940 to 1946. He has published 300 scientific papers and the following books: The Structure of Line Spectra, Introduction to Quantum Mechanics, The Nature of the Chemical Bond, General Chemistry, and No More War. We quote exerpts from Albert Szent-Gyorgy, Nobel Prize-winner'sbook review of No More War by Linus Pauling. The book brings out clearly the monstrosity of war, the difference of the 'peace of plenty for all' we could have, and the miserable end we are heading for by continuing to heap up the instruments of destruction. The difference between these two possibilities is so evident that one feels ashamed that sucha book has to be written at all, that we still squander our treasures building gigantic war machines while there still are hungry mouths to fill and many schools to build. But such a book did have to be written and Pauling's policy is the most hopeful oneg to go to the people at large ...... and convince them that there is no safety in the metastable balance of terror. One must ask himself why Pauling, one of the greatest scientists of our time, who could gain nothing by writing such a book should do so... .,. . . The answer is evident: this book is the expression of the anguish, anxiety, and moral responsibility most scientists must feel, once they look beyond the narrow limits of their actual research. This makes the book one of the most important historical doc- uments of our age and makes Pauling stand out among us as one of the greatest figures of science. He reminds this reviewer of the Bible story of Sodom, condemned by God to be destroyed. Eventually God promised to spare the city if it could produce a sufficient number of virtuous men. Pauling maybe among those men for whose sake we will be forgiven and spared an atomic war and the possible extinction of our race. ,Q
