COACHES 2 ' L QA Mr. Aldridge Mr. Matye MR. ASCHENBRENER HEAD COACH SEASON REVIEW Despite the actual won-lost record, the 1958 Football season was very colorfull with many exciting moments. The season opened in a Saturday afternoon contest which saw Washington defeat Franklin 18-O. Cardell Matthews made all three touchdowns with the aid of some expert blocking from Marc Sprague and others. A week later, the Colonials came from behind in the last quarter to tie Benson 7-7. In the last five seconds, Leon Warren went around right end to score, and the conversion was completed by Matthews. Unfor- tunately, there were several injuries, and as a result, the Washington team lost to Cleveland, jefferson, Roosevelt, Wilson, and Lincoln. The high spot of the season came when Washington beat Grant for the first time in ten years. When the final gun sounded, the score stood 44-O. Cardell Matthews, Leon Warren, and Oscar West each made two touchdowns, while Bill Candee, who is usually known for his excellent line play- ing ability, was switched to the back field late in the game and scored on a two yard run. Bill also scored both conversions which ran the total to 44 points. Washington can indeed be proud of Bill as he was not only elected to the All-City team, but also gained a position on the Sate Squad. In addition, he was recogniied by his teammates as the most valuable player and the best lineman. Eddie Vetsch and Cardell Matthews each received honorable mention on the All-City team, and Leon Warren was named to the Oregonian third team. Next year,Washington can look forward to a good season as there will be several experiencedjuniors returning .
