' if , .1 yjq-, ' s 1.,-1 -- 1 , ,t V. 1 x ' .- Its' -V years he has proved his interest in the school by providing for such things as a snack bar, first in the city in 1947, a student body store, a band and costume room, a counselor's room, and a recre- ation center. Mr. Smith's varied background may be one of the factors that promoted his success today. He attended high school in Billings, Montana, which was, at the time, a rough frontier town near the Crow Indian reservation. Buffalo Bill was often seen on the streets, and this blending of the old and new West caused Mr. Smith to become greatly interested in western history. He now conducts lectures on this topic at the Extension Division of the University of Oregon and at Portland State. Mr. Smith gradu- ated from Montana State College with a major in education and a minor in science. He also graduated from Oregon College of Education. He took his graduate work at such well known col- leges as Stanford, Columbia, University of Colorado, and Oregon State, where he obtained his master's degree. While attending Montana State College, he met Mrs. Smith. They have been mar- ried for thirty-six years. During this time Mrs. Smith has loved and shared the interest of every school with her husband. To make their life more complete they have three daughters and six grand-children. If interest helps to make a personality, our principal certainly has an amazing one. He has an enormous collection of jazz rec- ords of both old and new vintage and also a variety of classical compositions and musical show scores. Mr. Smith hopes to fulfill his desire to travel when he retires. He plans to visit the Mediter- ranean area and see the Valley of the Kings in Egypt. Being of ' ':. .- kf 5 3 ,I , . Q It'.,'ig5!
