It is his job to see that all activities of the clubs conform with the school regulations and help to solve any problems therein. He is respon- sible for the meetings held in our recreation center which must all be scheduled through him. He has gained the confidence and ad- miration of all those who come in contact with him. Below: One of Mr. Ma1oney's many jobs is to answer any questions the students may have about the club program here at Wash- ington. i 53 The Washington High School Recreation Center, located in the basement of the Haw- thorne Building, is the center of many stu- dent activities. It was completed in 1950 andi cost approximately 343, 000. Club meetings, dances, the annual Daffodil Shows and recreational programs are among those activities conducted here. It is composed ot three club rooms: the Birch, the Pinyon, the Ponderosa, as well as a pantry where re- freshments and snacks are served. Mr. Ma- loney's otfice and a large dance floor, com- plete with coke and candy machines, are also included. REC. LIBRARY The class of '54 would like to express their thanks to Miss Lancefield for her willing assistance these past four years. We at Washington are blessed with an organized library and an efficient Librarian. This is something to be proud of and to make good use of. F IRE SQUAD These students have a terrific responsibil- ity. The efficiency and speed of our fire drills weighs heavely on their shoulders. They cer- tainly deserve the most credit for the success of these drills. With Mary McCloskey and Al Soderstrom as captains these students have performed a highly commendable service. nf' A . at by STAGE CREW These are the men behind the scenes in our dramatic productions. They have efficiently taken care of the props during our assemblies and operated the noon movies. Under the management of Myron Forsyth these fellows have done a job that cannot be minimized. I29 M133 MRS. BAUMAN MRS. SHIRLEY SECRETARIES MISSSYKES In the main office these faces are a pleasantly familiar sight. Mrs. Bauman, Mrs. Shirley, and Miss Sykes are always willing to help the students and their cheerful attitude has won them respect and admiration. BOOK ROOM For two years now Mrs. Williamson has been in charge of the book room. She is responsible for the circulation of our textbooks and audio- visualequipment, and she also does a bit of book repairing on the side. STUDENT BODY STORE The well beaten path to this counter is fam- iliar to everyone. Under the able supervision of Mr. Parkes and Mrs. Manion this group ofstudents is ready to change your quarter or to outfit you with the necessary term report equipment. Although the Colonials failed to break into the winner's circle the entire season, they could never be accused of not giving their best or quitting before the final buzzer. What more can be expected from an one? Gone from last year's team were the familiar faces of stalwarts Ken Pierce, Dick Wilson, Ed Davis, and Bill Barnes, all of whom captured positions on the l952 All-Cit squad. with only two weeks of drills behind them, the Colonials invaded McMinnville for their only pre -season test. The finalbuzzer found Washington on the short end of a 32-0 count. Openincg league action against Frank O'Neil's rugged Roosevelt crew, the locals again foun competition overwhelming as they were buried beneath a 47-0 assault. Jefferson's Hopkin Jenkins field was the scene of Washi1:gton's next stru gle. The Colonials staged a determined battle before falling to ill, Hogan, ang ass- ociates, 32-6. Paced by Jimmy Precio11s Williams, Benson, the eventual city champion, rolled to an impressive 21-0 decision over the Stark Streeters the followin Friday. Rain was the main feature in Washington's next encounter. The Eolonials battled both the elements and Cleveland, losing on both counts, with the score 2l-0 besides cleaning bills for muddy uniforms. In the following contest, the win-starvedColonials fell prey to Lincoln's Card- inals 25-O. Bill Jackson crashed 'over to give Grant a narrow 26-19 victory after the two clubs had put up determined struggles for three quarters in the sixth round of league action. Franklin downed Doug Vickery's charges 14-13 in the tightest contest of the year to wrap up the 1953 season. Half back John Hall, who missed the early part of the season, but still man- aged to lead the Colonial scoring parade with three TD's and Joe Key, who sparkled at end and tackle, both offensively and defensivel were named to the 1953 All- City team. Both are juniors and will be returning ?or action next year. ik'- 5. Therefore, while the Colonials did not compile an impressive record, on the whole, they gained the experience that will be valuable in coming court campaigns. Under the able leadership of genial Coach Bill McCluskey, who rounded out his seventh season as Colonial maple mentor, Washington finished with a 4-4 pre-season slate and a 2- 12 league record. Only four members of the 1952-53 team were on hand at the season's outset and of these four only Ray DeFant and Terry Blair played enough to earn their letters last year. Guard Bob Jorgie Jorgensen, who was elected captain by his team mates, and guard Paul Cook were the other two returnees. Besides the previously mentioned four, the local hoopsters were paced by speedster John Hall, number two Maroon and Scorer, fbehind Blairj center Joe Key, and forwards John Win- ters and Cecil Hughey. But when the time came to pass out laurels We could not forget the devoted service of these following reserves: Eddie Wright, Dick Darby, Al Hatton, and Bill Meany who all had their moments and were truly indispensable. At the climax of the season, Mr. McCluskey beamed happily into his priceless crystal ball and was plainly overjoyed on sighting the reflections of the many squad members who will be returning to toil in Maroon and Gold gear next year. 'S ,flu-' L Warren Bolin--Coach QBelowJ Joe McCarthy, the old fireman of the Colonial mound staff, displays his feared fast one. Although slated to wind up in the depths of the Portland Interscholastic League basement, Warren Bolin's Colonials were fighting it out for the loop's third slot with a 4-3 record at this writing. Aided a great deal by the effective chucking of the mound staff composed of Joe McCarthy, Tom Richardson, and Warren J ackel, the Colonials have established themselves as constant threats in the eyes of league opponents. So far, Terry Clif- ford, Walt Hilands, Bob Jorgensen, and Jim Hilands have been carrying the big bats for the Maroon and Gold squad. Due to an early publication date, the campaign's outcome was not known at this time. If these first contests are any indication of Colonial diamond potentialities, they can not be excluded from the championship contenders list. ..4n.hln.......... Greeted by an exceptionally large turnout, veteran cinder mentor and athletic director, Gerald Exley, proceeded to create a capable cinder squad.
