E it R OS E S To Portland, Oregon, the city that lives in a mythical kingdom ot roses tor one week in lune of each year, We proudly dedicate this publication. The rose, which is a symbol of love, typities the spirit of every Portlander all year round and especially during the week that We pay special tribute to it. Like a rose growing within a tertile garden, Portland lies nestled in a valley sur- rounded by towering mountains, crystal clear lakes and rushing rivers. We are very proud to live in this city and to dedicate our yearbook to it. -4 MR. WINDNAGLE It was with the deepest regret that the students and faculty of Washington High School had to say goodbye to Vere Windnagle, vice principal, near the end of the first term of school this year. Although we are saddened by his departure, we look with pride upon his advancement as coordinator of school buildings and equipment with the Portland public schools. ' A member of the 1912 graduating class of Washington High School, Mr. Windnagle compiled an enviable record both academically and in athletics. We wish to express our sincere best Wishes for every success to our vice principal in his new position. 'Nt 5: 'L .ff- iii, hy ' t. c f s f , ' 4 91377 I, wwf! The large step We are now taking, has been made possible by the excellent facilities we have shared at Washington. The practical experience we have acquired is something which we all realize is priceless. lt would be very difficult to thank any one group or any one person for the valuable assistance that has been given to us: but without the guidance and co-operation of the administration, the leadership and assist- ance of the faculty, and the outstanding spirit of the student body, we would not have achieved the goal which We set. Although primarily concerned with the handling and labeling ot new books, plus the mending of old ones, the depart- ment is also the distribution point tor school audio-visual aid equip- ment. STUDENT BODY STORE Under the direction ot Fred Parkes, Washington High math instructor, the student body store was efficiently managed and ope erated by a student stall. Well-lighted and spacious, the store enables the co-operative students Who work behind the counter to provide better service to the store's student customers, STAGE CREW Much appreciation must be given to the Washington I-ligh School stage crew for the tremen- dous job they have done in the line of dramatics behind the scenes. They are equally impor- tant as the performers themselves, who take it tor granted that props will be moved and scenes changed quickly. Among the many plays which the stage crew helped to make successful Were the May Masque and the Senior Class Play. FIRE SQUAD One ot the most important or- ganizations in our school is the Fire Squad. On the members of this depends the security of the student body. They must be alert and ready at all times to calmly evacuate the building swiftly in the event of a tire. This year ten girls were added to the Fire Squad to contribute to the safety of the school. vs 5 3 E E S Q v E 1 I 'hw Q 'Nm '13 'WW F LL HUFTY COVERT Fall President TER SUE SCHWIND Fall Secretary M B9qfrice I Ion B H Olly-- Y co,en-vb... Its letters embody the three qualifications for membership in the club: interest and ability in art, reliability, and obligingness. Every member of Aro is selected on the basis of these three qualities. During every year at Washington, Aro members lend a helping hand to those desiring aid in projects concerning art. Many posters that Washing- tonians see in the halls each year are those made by members of this club. Two of the most important projects of Aro this year were the sports board and the Aro ginger bread Santa Claus sale. The cartoons that come out in nearly every Washingtonian are drawn by an Aro member, Karla Steinhauser. Cartoons in past editions are also Aro products. Toiling for the well-liked mentor Bill Gray, the locals struggled through a season th was highlighted by a l2-6 upset over highly rated Benson, who lat was a finalist in the state tournament. The Washington squad wt constantly plagued by injuries, the result of the overeagerness to w at any cost. Warren Bolin, line coach, developed a line which, wht it clicked, proved to be one of the toughest defensive walls in the cit The Coloniais rated for the cellar, got off to a slow start as the IV Minnville Bruins romped past the locals, Zl-7 in a slow preseason gar that saw 200 lb. Fred Casey score l5 of the Bruins points. At the Iamhoree, much to the teams's delight, tlater their plightl the were matched against the Generals who powered to a lopesided 31 win. This game was later chalked up as a win for the locals becau Grant used an illegal player and was forced to forfeit several games. ln this heartbreaker, the Washington forward wall clicked beautifull stopping dead the league leading Indians. Desperation play by tl Cleveland squad in the second half paid off in two touchdowns, tl deciding factor. At long last the home aces won a game, and what a game! The u derdog Washingtonians, sparked by the brilliant passing attack Duane Phelps, completely baffled the tremendous Techmen. The teal work of the Washington clan shone in a game that saw Benson's I City fullback, George Beardsley slowed to practically nothing. Tl defensive abilities of Dick Wilson were brought to light in this gan as he boomed through the big Benson line to block Bardsley 's kic Ken Pierce on the alert, picked up the pigskin and galloped into tl Maurice Dems-+Fu11bac1c Dick wi1gon..Tag1de mam 1 BALL and zone for the winning six points. Iimniy Williams tallied the Tech- nen's only score when he found one of the few holes in the Colonial ine and sprinted to the goal posts. For the first three quarters the play was dominated by the Quakers is they racked up 26 points to Washington's O. Finally late in the hird chapter and the last quarter, the Colonials clicked and piled up l4 points in about that many minutes for the final count-Franklin 26, Nashington l4 . In the next game the home clan tipped the revengeful minded Car- iinals 7-U in a penalty filled contest. The lone touchdown came via I pass which little Sam Nicoletti grabbed. Sam wormed his way hrough most of the players on both teams and finally to everyones surprise broke out clear in the stripped zone to score the winning tally. Iefferson's Demos turned all their power lose on the hapless Colonials, is they roared past the locals Zl-O. The only highlight in this game rom a Colonial standpoint was the strong Washington defense which several times held when backed up against their own goal line. ln the final game of the season, the locals lost to the Roughriders Z5-6 in a rough little contest. Tempers flared to the extent that twice he referees stopped the clock to allow the boys to cool off. Washington, despite its new turf, played no home games. Also, he Colonial Kids were plagued with injuries which kept star players ike Bill Barnes, Ray Delfant, Dick Wiles, and others out of action much sf the time. When the locals were hot, they were unbeatable, and when they were cold, at least we called it cold, they were a mediocre team that just cou1dn't seem to find their range. ft seemed when the going was rough, the home clan got rough breaks. Bill McCluskey's Maroon and Gold hoop- sters, however, had the highest scoring offense in the city, averaging 58.36 points per game. Washington ended on the long end of a hot 'n cold preseason cir- cuit, winning five and losing three. The final game saw the Colonials up-end the highly touted Vancouver Trappers, 62-60. The Trappers had previously trampled Cleveland and Central Catholic. The Colonials got off to a slow start in regular season play, dropping the first tilt to Cleveland 74-54, on the cold end of the local cagers hot 'n cold warfare. ln this rough contest, twenty-one trips to the foul line were whistled by the officials in the first quarter alone. ln the return match, the local lads gave the champs a real scare, finally, in hot games in their, by now famous, hot 'n cold play. After their disheartening starts, the Stark Street Stars came to life and found their range to thump Iefferson 71-62. ln the second game of the two-garne series, the revengefully minded Democrats smashed Washington 64-46. The 14th Streeters were surprised by Franklin 51-48. This loss was due mainly to the Colonials' inability to hit from the charity strip. In the second contest, the Washington Wonders, still steaming from the first upset, soundly trounced the Quakers 67-47. Again breaking into the win column, Washington sneaked by Grant 63-57, on the local court. The return game saw Eli Morgan, who was too tall for anybody to stop, dunk 28 points to pace Grant to a 52-44 the last quarter giving in by a 59-57 count. ln the first game with the Rough Riders, Washington was upset by the then underrated Teddies, 63-53 on the Co1onia1's tight court. The Colonials got their vengence Kids 69-62, on the 1atter's spa on the Teds, by humbling the St. Iohn's cious maple. This was one of the locals victory. Washington soundly trounced Benson 73-57 as Richie Costi poured 36 points through the hemp, and in so doing, establishing a school record. The second game reached the freezing level of the Colonials hot 'n cold competition as Benson swamped the local lads 60-39. Washington had one very bright spot in the league. This was the double triumph over the Cards. ln the first contest the Red Birds gave the Kids a scare but some clutch foul shooting paid off 54-51. This year's rally squads succeeded in re- arousing the long dormant Washington spirit. A thrilling climax came in a late football rally when the Colonial forces held a steady yell for sixteen minutes. Other demonstration signifying a will to win in the students followed during the next lunch in the athletic field. An abundance of rallies both on the stage and on the ramp sug- gested the tireless effort expended by our leaders Don Ross and Vaughn Castle as well as the entire squads toward backing our teams in the city race. Through this effort a steady attendance was achieved at the football and basketball games, the local gym was always filled to the capacity crowd. Let's hope that a con- tinuance of rally squad as we had this year will be instrumental for championship teams in the future. The club, this year, has participated in many activities, both in and out of school. Since it is affiliated with both city and state groups, a great portion of the club's activities have been meetings with other groups. City council meetings are attended by two designated club members. At school, the club has sponsored two assemblies: one on UN Day which was a mock meeting of the United Nations Security Council and was broadcast over station KOlNg the other was for all seventh period history classes, and featured a visiting teacher at Reed College, Dr. Edwards, who gave an interesting talk on Australia. The executive system is some what unusual as it is composed of a board of five members with an alternating chairman. However, all board members are elected to certain jobs. This system is used to divide the work equally among five people rather than directing it to one person. SPRING BOARD Sec. .. . FALL BOARD Sec. . 7 - Y IOAHHS I-GMC! ..
