I V- Whiley Dahl Hurry Brown Buddy Clay Boys' League -- Fall '48 Since its organization in the spring ol 1948, the Boys League has rapidly become an integral part of Washington High School. During the fall of l948, under the competent leadership oi President Bob Stoll, the organization embarked upon a tars reaching program which projected its influence not only to all boys of Washington, but to the entire student body as well. On the eve ot Thanksgiving vacation, a semi-formal dance was held in the gymnasium. Bob Hughs and Bob Wheeless, as members ol the Boys' League, entertained during the inter- mission with several novelty numbers with trumpet and drums. Bruce Vester and lerry Wells, co-chairman of the dance, were largely responsible tor the success of the venture, which prom- ises to become an annual event in the years to come. The Christmas season was made considerably brighter lor many of the men in the Veterans' Hospital when they received candy-filled Christmas stockings, the Boys' League was one ol several school groups which took part in this program. Un- doubtedly the most commendable project of the fall term was the regular visitation of two handicapped boys. With projects such as these, there can be no question as to the importance of an organization of this type, it has amply proved itself and has given promise ol even greater things to come, o Lyons Wheelus Denney KoGPk9 Shannon Stirnwiess Bob Skene Paul Byhre Eddie Caldwell Boys' League -- Spring '19 The spring L49 Boys League Council accepted as its purpose the promotion of the interests of boys at Washington. An effort was made to present a well-rounded program of activities that would appeal to all boys. lntramural athletic programs were planned and carried out, Boys who did not play on organized school teams were given the opportunity to participate in intramural contests. Winning teams and individuals have their pictures in the Lens. A conference was held for junior and senior boys in the Portland area. They met with representatives of the state and independent colleges. Problems of entering college and adjusting to campus life were discussed. This was the first time such a conference for bovs was held. The Boys' League Week was held in April. lt was climaxed by an assembly put on in conjunction with the Girls' League, Throughout the term, special emphasis was placed upon partie cipation. Everyone was given the opportunity to sign up for com- mittee work. lffanj: boys took advantage of this opportunity and it was through their efforts in helping to organize and plan activities as well as to participate that the Bo '4.' s League was enabled to have a most successful term ff? Bushman Welch Fisher Vostor Iackson Ingrid Carlson Ianet Wick Eleanor Colwell Marilyn Coulter Girls' League -- Fall '4 During the tall term, the Girls' League of Washington High School sponsored many activities, the most outstanding of which was the annual Girls' League Week, October 26-29, Melita Piazza was crowned queen ot the League at the tradi- tional assembly on October 28. ln addition, birthday cards were sent monthly to the children at the Shriners hospital. The tall '48 Girls League Council expresses sincere thanks to Miss Hazel Ohmert for her capable assistance and compe- tent advice. Mrs. Louella Metcalf, in addition to her duties in the capacity of counselor to freshmen boys, has served as coordinator of scholarship information. She has compiled data on several hundred scholar- ships, local and national, and has set up a program of guidance that has added much to Washingtons already excellent counseling program. Through Mrs, Metcalf, those students interested in scholarships of any variety have found the much needed information and assistance so necessary to the realization of their scholarship aspirations. As a result of this assistance, the total number of scholarship winners in the class of Iune 49 is ex' pected to exceed that of any other graduating class in the history of Washington High School, The 485 members of the senior class wish to express their sincere appreciation to Mrs. Metcalf ior her patience, sympathy, and understanding in assisting each individual student with his own par- ticular problems. lt is our hope that this coordination of scholarship data will continue to be an integral part of Wash- ington's counseling program in years to come. fy f , .Q , 1 ' xv? fn V f Tv , . 1- Carol C. This Lens contained many innovations. This year for the first time all pictures have been taken by the school Camera Club, and a great deal of credit is due to Miss Grace Hobbs, advisor, for her assistance. The four-color pictures on the division pages are scenes throughout the state of Oregon to which this book is dedicated, Larger page size makes possible originality in picture ar- rangement. A feature section picturing student life and activities is an interesting addition. The Senior class hopes that this publication will be well received, and that future Lens staffs will carry on some of the ideas developed this year. There are t'.-:o factors that help to explain the unprecedented size ot this years senior class. First, the 423 students enrolling at Washington in lune of l945 made up the largest freshman class in Washinatons 43-year history, Secondly, the senior class of lune '49 includes in its ranks approximately 70 '.-:ho chose to remain in school an additional semester rather than to leave in lanuary' '.-:ithout the customary oeremonzes that go '.'.'it?1 formal graduation Thus the Fort'-,'fNiners enjoy' the aistiricuon of being the largest graduating class in the history' of Washington l-liah School, and auite possibly the largest of all time. Admission to the carnival, which was staged in the basement and on the first floor of the main building, was open to all, Scores of people from 7 to 70 attended the gala affair. The carnival featured three grand events-concessions, of which there were some 25, ranging from a country store to an affection meter, a three-act vaudevilleg and a juke box dance in the cafeteria. Nearly all of Washingtons clubs and various student organizations spon- sored a concession of some sort. The vaudeville included acts by students and faculty, and a Gay Nineties production by the Parent-Teacher Association. Playing o major role in the carnival was the PTA. The Washington drama and music departments also assisted with the auditorium show. 5 X i4 L 151 ,QA Q4 Dean St. Dennis Suzanne Slovall lerry Thielen Mary Unash Dick Waltie Bob Steib Pat Strandy Rosemary Thomas Pat Vail Dean Wangeren q-D ox ,Q C7 1-v G. if f L' 3' W7 w M W ' fy , I ,A V , V 7 v' I' V I 4, , 1 f aiu Av I Wi: 154 Anne Stevens Phil Sutherland Pat Thompson Betty Van Buskirk lack Warren w David Slevens Pete Swimm Ron Throckmorlon Ron Vandehey Ted Watarworth Flay Slewart Tom Takeoka Beverly Tabbens Nancy Vandergrili Carson Weddls 5, r W Yah 1,4 , , X Gilberl Si.
