industrial world. We hope that the lessons taught you here will remain with you that those with whom you come in contact will be made happier from knowing and being associated with you. In taking your places in the professional and social life of the com- munity you cannot hope to avoid at least some of the reverses and dis- appointments that have come and will continue to come, to all of us. Let not these discourage nor overwhelm you. Rather let them be the means of developing and strengthening those mental and spiritual qual- ities that are essential in the growth and stability of character. Your success in life will depend, in a large measure, on how you meet the difficult situations of life and the spirit in which you strive to overcome them. In our games and sports we emphasize that it is not the winning of the race that counts but how the race was run. So it is in life. The attainment of material wealth or social position are not necessarily a standard of success. Rather it is the way in which they were won-the way the game of life was played-that measures success. Your four years in Washington High School have been, I trust, happy ones, and as the years go by you will look back upon them with fond recollections. I, too, have spent happy years in the old school and my memories of Washington High and the Class of Ianuary 1942 will always be pleasant ones: I prize most highly your kindness in making me an honorary member of the Class. We are, in a sense, graduating together and l will always feel that I am an integral part of the class. May Divine Providence smile upon you and bring peace and con- tentment. -HUGH I, BOYD

During the time that you have been here We have earnestly endeav- ored to instill in you high ideals, the spirit ot fair play, and respect tor the rights ot others. Now, suddenly and without your volition, you have had thrust upon you a principal role in one ot the most critical dramas ot all time. Fate has decreed that your generation shall make history as tew generations in all time have done. Al- ways remember that you are an inte- gral part of man's great democracy, that you are not inanimate pawns but masters of yourselves and of your fu- ture. The winds and storms may beat but it holds its own. l cannot think of a more appro- priate symbol for the Class of Ianuary 1942.
