Stubblefield Superintendent As one of the many in whom you evoke the keenest admiration and respect, the Yearbook Staff takes this occasion on behalf of the stu- dents and faculty at Washington High School to say--many thanks to you. Since 1951, Mr. J. Kendall Hog- gard, Director of Instruction, has contributed much to the aca- demic growth of Washington High School. Consultation in scholastic matters and direction in course evaluation have proven his capa- bilities. Sincerely, quietly, modestly, and with grace and dignity has Mr. Hoggard demonstrated his deep in- terest in the students of Washington High. Our superintendent is more than an able administrator. He has a deep interest in education, and has de- voted his concern to those values which Washington High School en- deavors to maintain. Courage, loyalty, understanding, initiative, vision and a saving sense of humor are all attributes of a good administrator. We, the students and faculty of Washington High School, salute you as an out- standing exponent of all these qualities. Under your leadership our school has been built up to a high point of efficiency and to a high standard. It is an honor for us at Washington High School to have you as our superintendent. Paqe 2 Mr. J. Kendall Hoggard Director of Instruction OUR SCHOOL BOARD Many watched Washington High School grow from an impersonal frame- work to the beautiful steel structure it is today. Our school represents the combined efforts of the School Board and Administration in the program of expansion in both the physical facilities and in the scholastic program as well. We, the students and faculty of Washington High School, express our sincere thanks and appreciation to the El Dorado School Board for its achievements in behalf of our school. ..........4r ,, Seated are: Mrs. Merle Cunningham, Mr. Olen Taylor, Mr. I. Robinson, Principal Coordinating instruction, activities and service into an effective educational program rests with the principal. The administration and staff of Washington High School are ever seeking ways to broaden the dimensions of learning. For the past two years, Mr. Robinson has performed his arduous tasks with a seriousness, a sense of responsibility and a feeling of the gravity of the issues involved which deserves the highest praise. He received the distinguished NASSP award for professional service given in the promotion of secondary education. He is also listed in the 1962 Who's Who in American Education. Page 4 lk A 1, . The news of the -I untimely death of Mr. Glenwood f .l . Soldon came as a startling shock and the anguish induced by his passing was, and still is, visibly and profoundly felt by all those with whom he came into daily contact. The staff and adviser of the 1963 Hornet dedicate this year's edition as a tri- bute of love, affection, and respect to his cherished memory. Mr. Soldon died in the full tide of a career which gave great promise for fu- ture usefulness. He was greatly esteemed in our school and in the community as well. Here was a man of superlatively high standards as reflected in the ex- cellence of his record at the Agricultural, Mechanical and Normal College, Pine Bluff, Arkansas, the institution from which he was graduated with honors in 1962. Other honors granted to Mr. Soldon at his Alma Mater were: election to Alpha Kappa Mu National Honor Society, Captain of the Lions, A. M. and N's football team, 1960-1961, Scholastic All-American, 1961, and election to the All Southwest football team. The genial personality and the high caliber of service rendered by this fine man will long be missed by those of us at Washington High. All of us who cher- ish his memory can perhaps find some small measure of consolation in the words of the poet Walt Whitman who wrote: He is not gone. He is just away, With a cheery smile and the wave of a hand, He has wandered into an unknown land, And left us wondering how very fair that land May be, since he taries there. It is our hope that this small tribute will serve to edify, preserve, and per- petuate the memory of Mr. Soldon, to whom this year's Hornet is dedicated. May he enjoy the eternal rest and peace that he has so nobly earned. by - B. D. Ross Page 7 FACULTY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT FOREIGN LANGUAGE Dietician Miss Betty Eason A . B. English Mrs. E. M.
