f . -4:31 1:-'f .in i g-fJeJ1mhfm This year's annual is dedicated to one of the men who was instrumental in the educational move- ment here - the late Mr. vlohn R. Dykes. In respect and gratitude for one who did so much with so little. the yearbook staff members use this method to ex- press their appreciation to a truly great American. Although little has ever been mentioned about this illustrious scholar and his achievements, his equal as a historian and educator has seldom been found. Not only did he sacrifice his ability and time, but also his money to accomplish a sound educational program. During the oil boom around l920-21, the city population increased and pupil enrollment outgrew the little three room building. Through the cooper- ation of several interested eitilens, Nlr. Dykes was able to meet the emergency. Although never complete- ly finished and under the name of XVashington Insti- tute, the high school had its beginning. Behind every great man, there is always a woman. Xlis. Mable Dykes, wife of the noted teacher, still lives here at her North XVa'shington residence. She vividly recalls her husband's strong determination to build a high school. In his great effort to start a high school, the emi- nent figure had many difficulties and disappoint- ments, but never gave up. He finally succeeded in accomplishing a plifl of what he wanted to do.
