Zin jinmuriatin Our flag, its red, white, and blue bars flying at half mast against the autumn sky, expressed more eloquently than any voice or any pen the anguish we all felt at the death of Robert Gray. Few of us realized the tragic magnitude of his illness: we were certain of his speedy recovery, could imagine no other course of events. But early in the morning of October 6, 1940, after little more than a week of illness, Robert Gray died. The stunning suddenness of his passing nun' bed our senses: at first we had difficulty in believ- ing that Death had removed from our midst one so near and dear to us as Bob. But not for long. Tear-filled eyes and choked voices soon attested to that. As a final expression of our sorrow, a memorial service was held in the auditorium of the high school. Mr. Soule. of the Y. M. C. A., Reverend Keagy, and Dick Anderson, representing the students, delivered messages appropriate to the occasion. Bob was a very popular student. He was well liked by all who knew him, and his cheery smile and kind remaiks were constantly winning him New friends. He participated in many school activi- ties. including' the Forensic and Commercial Clubs and the Hi-Y Club. of which he was Vice-Presb dent. His was a familiar figure also in the Pep Club. for his contagious spirit of goodwill and en- thusiasm made him one of the schoo1's most conspicuous Cheer Leaders. So in an effort to express our lasting respect and love for him, we Seniors devote this page of Hi-Life as ai memorial to our departed classmate, Robert Gray. The girls, under the competent supervision of Miss Morris and Miss Trewin, together with the boys, under the direction of coaches Geneva, Mecklenburg, Duea and Kimherlin have spent many profitable hours in the gymnasium and on the practice field. In enumerating the lasting value of something as important as athletic participation, it is not essential to recount the number of wins and losses of a season. The official score of this or that particular contest will soon be forgotten: but those who actually had a part in the zraxue will have actnuired somethin: of more lasting' importance. These boys and uirls have gained ai more substantial idea of real sportsmanship, and how to give and take generously. Such qualities are far too rare. and any activity founded on such principles should have mn- rleenest respect and admiration. The panel at the top of the page contains, reading' left to right, the pictures of coaches Geneva, lilecklenhurzr. and Duea. Fred Geneva comes to us from Clinton, lowa. where he had a successful coaching career in the high school of that city. Assistant football coach Orval Mecklenlmurg, a graduate of Iowa State Teachers College, is one of the newer members of the athletic department. Joe Duea, for five years fl member of the VVashing'ton' school system, has been active as assistant basketball coach. Kenneth liimberlin, a member of both the high school and junior college faculties, has clnirge of the Junior College football and basketball Squads. This year it boasts approximately two-hundred. of our some four-hun- dred fifty students. Under the commanding batons of M6551-S, Brayton and White, it has been able to achieve nationwide recognition. Maurice Brayton, pictured at the left of the panel, has directed instrumental music in the Wash- ington schools for the past six years, while Boyd White. to the right. has been in charge of our vo- cal music for two years. In past years. vocal and instrumental groups have entered pre-state, state and national contests with great success. Since the formation of music festivals, our vocal and instrumental groups have also participated in these, first at Burlington, and then at Iowa City. Washington citizens have always been proud of the fine record achieved by the Marching Band, which went to the national contest in Minneapolis and brought home a first rating. This year we have had the honor of having Various vocal and instrumental students selected for the All State Chorus, Orchestra and Band at Des Moines. This was indeed a great satisfaction for the participants. who were chosen from the whole state of Iowa. Every year the music department presents a Wide variety of programs. The Concert Band offers about three concerts a year, and the Marching Band appears at football games and various other occa- sions. The Orchestra has frequently presented programs at the school plays, and the vocal and in- strumental groups, combined with the Chorus, have given inspiring programs at Christmas and East- er. Unfortunately, few people realize how much time is spent by the director and his students in Dreparing these concerts, and as a result, they fail to receive the appreciation that they so much de- SGTVQ. The school page is published every Monday in The Evening Journal. Each student is given the opportunity to be editor and to give the assignments for the other Qlassmeh, lt is his duly to seo that all the stories are in and that the page is ready for the press. His duty is finished on Tuesday morning when the stories are pasted in the class record book, Of the various types of news re- porting: the most important is shown at the right by Raymond VVeeks and Juanita Miller. They are inter- viewing: Norma Hotle. Student re- porting consists largely of inter- viewing: the students, faculty, and- eitizens of the town. Since the school page is published every Monday, the students are anx- ious to see their work in print. .Those seen viewing: the fruits Ot R their labor are John Rothlisberger, Herbert Huber. Terry Anderson, James Gallagher, Merle Booth, and Holi Gates. Tuesday morning: the class is bus- ilv engraired in pasting: their work in notebooks. Every week the group is given a notebook assignment also, and so st-issors and paste are not in the least uncommon. Those seen busily engagetl in the activities of the class are llelen llavel, delving in the depths of the journalism hook, Phyllis Sisk, Vlas- ta Musil. and Marilyn Green work- ing on their respective notebooks, and Jean Applegate and Jean Math- ers comparing notes obtained from an interview. Another of the more important factors considered in journalism is learninrs: to write headlines. Almost every Thursday and Friday the students are seen trying to write a two-column headline or a smaller one. Headlines often cause confusion because some words just simply won't fit. The person who reeeives the big:- Qest workout is the typist. She spends all of her spare time typing stories. and fast minute stories keep her especially busy. But even after she has finished, a proofreader is necessary to go throuy.:'h and correct the mistakes. At last, when every- thim: is finished, the copy rushed to the newspaper office, everyone ean relax-until the following week.
