Likewise, let's take another glance at a very worthy team. The Wildcats started the season off with a bang and a 13-6 victory over a strong Leavenworth eleven. lt was the first time Wa shington handed Leavenworth a defeat in nine years. .lourneying to Atchison, the Maur Hill Ravens were attacked by the Wildcats, and devoured to a tune of 13-2. The Olathe Eagles were thenrouted by the Red and White clad team in a league opener. The Wildcats notched their second league win ina duel with Bonner Springs, and ruined the Braves' an nual homecoming by handing them a 26-13 defeat. The Rosedale game was postponed from Friday, October 21, to the following Monday. After an early Saturday morning practice, the Washington Wildcats were ready for the Rosedale Wildcats, and vice versa. Both teans exerted every effort in a bid for the East Kansas League crown. The Washington ball club e- merged a 1-point victor, with a final score of 7-6. Turner pulled off the big upset of the year in de- feating the much favored Washington eleven, 19-13. Washington then wm 19-0 victory over a strong Paola team and a 14-7 over Osawatomie. Assistant Coaches W. WREN, K. DICK, W. Volume XIX Washington High School, Bethel, Kansas, May 10, 1950 No. l anhingtunian LEVER ICH HEADS PAPER The Washingtonian staff was se- lected from the second year iournal- ism class in September to serve the entire year. Though some positions were changed and many of the iournal- ism students are not on the staff, the paper could not have had such a suc- cessful year, without the efforts and complete co-operation of everyone The staff is as follows: Editor, Opal Leverichy News Editor, Joyce Walker, Sports Editor, Marilyn Gorsline, Feature Editor, Marjie Duncan, World Affairs Editor, Jackie Hill, Literary and Music Critic, Mariorie Shoreg Alumni and Scholastic Editor, Betty Blair: Special Assignment Writer, Nina Maupin: Copy Reader, Catherine Robertson, Librarian, Betty Deckmanf Exchange Editor, Peggy Gangwes: Business Manager, Edwin How- ard: Assistant Business Manager, Ber- nard Grindely Advertising and Circulation, W. B. Palmer: Promotion Manager, Henry Miller. JOURNALISTS FIND TIME FOR FUN In spite of the never ending tasks connected with the publi- cation of a newspaper, the iournalists atwashington I-liqh School still find time to have fun. A Valentine's Day waffle supper, with all the trimmings, was enioyed by this group at the home of their instructor, Mr. Kenneth l. Dick. The waffles were supplemented with Canasta games and home made Valentines. NEW JOURNALISM EQUIPME NT IN BIGGER EDITION The Washingtonian is published every fortnight, devoted to the students, faculty, and patrons of Washington High School. ln the new wing of the high school, the journalism room is located, equipped with a private phone and a printing press. All the new equipment is primarily means for saving time. The extension of the phone saves many a student a trip to the office, thus having that much more time to prepare copy, dum- my up, and so on. The printing press will cut the expenses of the newspaper as wellas providing for printing training to those who desire it. Starting with issue number twelve, the Washingtonian was made up of six pages instead of the usual four. This change was due to the efforts of the hard working staff and Mr. K. l. Dick, journalism instructor. Besides complete news coverage, columns dedicated to World Affairs and music and literature were placed in the publication. The editorial policy of the paper was impor- tant to school life, as it gave anyone the opportunity to express their opinions, and to better school life. The next goal of the ioumalism department is to print a weekly publication. C ui' STANDING: N- Maupin, J. HiII, Mr. K. Dick, sponsor, B. Deckman, M. Shore, Robertson, W. Palmer. SEATED: M. Gorsline, B. Blair, M. Duncan, O. Leverich, Gangwes, H. Miller, E. Howard. STAFF WORKS DILIGENTLY Getting a paper out is not as easy a iob as some surmise. First, assignments are made by the editor and the page edi- tors. After the copy is reported in, it must be edited completely. After all changes are made by the editors, the copy is turned over to the copy reader for a final check, then to the advisor for a d ou ble check. The stories are then on their way to the typesetter. They are linotyped and returned for proofreading and make-up. The printers is the next stop for the contents of the paper. Here it is prepared for publication: but before the paper is printed, a stone proof is run off tocheck make-upand any errors that could have been overlooked. After that the individual stories become composite publication, The Washingtonian. Due to the new journalism room and equipment, however, the iob of getting the paper out will be lessened greatly. The con- stant running from town to school is partly responsible for the fight against time. C P v '1- S74 STAND ITSG: P. Wykott, B. Tolrrun, P. Hulbert. SEATED: M. Roberts, C. Bollenger, L.
