U That's uslnour ancestors made a great discovery back in 1849 when they discovered gold in California. Mr. Huyck's discovery in 1945 was even greater---he discovered 105 gold nuggets right in the halls of Washington. He also discovered that each of them had a different sparkle. This discovery by our U head mann began the high school phase of our search for success, which we con- sider just as important as those other 49'ers search for gold, for doesn't success make one rich? And success it has been, from the moment we first stared, wide-eyed, at the big sober face of Mr. Wash- ington fnow we call him Uncle Georgel, staring down at us from the office wall. We took up the proper tools for our journey-books, pencils, and enthusiasm-and set out to discover the treasures before us. The first leader of our fruitful quest was Cecil Rogers, elected president at our first class meeting. Henry Soptich, vice president, and Nick Eisman, secretary-treasurer, helped to get us off to a good start. Mary Anne Rodina was class Cheerleader. From our vast store of beautiful girls, Evelyn Allen was chosen as freshman Homecoming attendant and Joyce Prichard and Jim Peerson were candidates for Hatchet royalty. Joyce Prichard, Evelyn Herdman, George Gottman, and Jim Peerson took their places on the Student Council and twenty-nine young athletes made our class noted for its contribution to sports. Cecil Rogers made an exceptionally good start, becoming the first Washington freshman ever to letter in varsity basket- ball. ,Mary Anne Bell and Peggy Crawford represented our class at the speech and drama festival in Lawrence. Mr. Roberts, Mrs. Waugh, and Mrs. McCaffrey helped us to complete a successful first year and September, 1946, found the same number of sophomores ready to embark on the second lap of their journey to success. Again Mr. Roberts took the lead, with Miss Covell and Miss Williams as able assistants. Officers for this year were Keith Gallehugh, president, Allan Andrews, vice-president, Allie Kay Grove, secretary, and Mary Lou Millich, treasurer. Pat Loguewas chosen Homecoming attendant for the sophomores, and Joyce Prichard, Jim Peerson, Elizabeth Mourning, and Henry Soptich were Student Council members. This page through the courtesy of White Church Hardware. 20 Eighteen athletes stuck to their guns and lettered in football and basketball. Another successful year begun and finished. Now the 49'ers were ready to blaze new trails-in Journalism, scholarship, and social activities. Fifteen budding journalists entered, with ideas galore, into the task of being reporters. Out of this little group came the campus magazine, WA-HI-LIT. Who knows to what heights it may climb? Leading the school in honor roll students, the Juniors elected Jim Peerson chief executive, with Jim Rand as vice- president, Cecil Rogers, secretary, and Leslie Gilmore, treasurer. Elizabeth Mourning was elected school cheerleader, and the debate team included three Juniors. Mary Anne Bell and Virginia Winner were majorettes. Still going strong, thirteen athletes lettered in varsity sports, Cecil Rogers and Frank Bigham claim- ing all-star ratings. Peggy Crawford, Virginia Boaz, and Jim Walker had cast parts in the Operetta, The Fire Prince'L Allan Andrews, Keith Gallehugh, and.loe Wray were chosen by the Juniors to go to Boys' State in Wichita. The class actually almost shook the rafters of Washington when they presented HWe Shook the Family Treen, under the direction of Miss Ruth Ann Gatchell. The cast of the comedy included: Allie Kay Grove, Cecil Rogers, Bill Nye, Mona Piper, Richard Sambol, Peggy Crawford, Keith Gallehugh, Bill Potts, Pat Logue, Alice DeVore, Joanne Rosentreter, and Evelyn Allen. The class, along with Mr. Roberts, Miss Gatchell, and Mr. Green, found themselves surrounded by the mysteries of King Neptune's Court, the scene and theme for the annual Junior-Senior Prom. 'Mid whales, fishes, nets, and ship hulls, the class proved that they could pull together through thick and thin. King Neptune is forever real in the minds of the 49'ers. Leaving the halls of W.H.S. in the spring of '43 meant the end of S0me of the happiest days of our lives, but happier still were the experiences we've shared these last nine months. September, '48! Seniors! One hundred four of them. Class election found Allan Andrews leading the surge of enthusiasts, while Frank Bigham was chosen vice-president, Joyce Prichard, Secretary, and, once more, Mary Lou Millich was class money collector. Rosemond McGraw, Albert Abernathy, and Elizabeth Mourning peered at us from the line of school cheer- leaders, and Evelyn Herdman and Nick Eisman reigned over the Homecoming celebration. Joyce Prichard, Keith Gallehugh, and Frank Bigham were Pep Club choices for Homecoming attendant and escorts, and Joanne Rosen- treter and Ivan Theroff represented the Senior Class as royalty. The Seniors truly took the lead this year, in nearly all of the school clubs and activities. Presidents of various activity organizations are: Allie Kay Grove, Student Council, Joyce Prichard, Y-Teens, Keith Gallehugh, Pep Club, Evelyn Campbell, Band, Pat Logue, Spanish Club, Evelyn Herdman, Horizon Club, Cecil Rogers, W-Club. Three seniors, Mary Anne Bell, Mona Piper, and Betty Campbell, represented Washington as a part of the school debate team. Joanne Rosentreter and Frank Bigham reigned as Queen and King of the Hatchet Ball, and Joyce Prichard, Marjorie Brown, Elizabeth Mourning, Berniece Delich, Cecil Rogers, Lester Kinder, Jim Peerson, and Bill Pannell were attendants and escorts. The varsity football and basketball squads claimed ten seniors, and Frank Bigham chalked up a new league record when he scored twenty-nine points during one basketball game. Lighthearted and ready for fun, the seniors plunged into the production of Our Hearts Were Young and Gayn, and broke all records for filling the house. Cast in the play were: Allie Kay Grove, Frank Bigham, Elizabeth Mourning, Allan Andrews, Keith Gallehugh, Evelyn Allen, Albert Abernathy, Connie Stanley, Gay Bath, Bill Nye, Joanne Rosentreter, Henry Strohmeyer, Richard Sambol, Joe Wray, Barbara Dooley, Anita Adams, and Bill Potts. Mrs. McCaffrey directed this comedy, and the class sponsors, Mr. Roberts, Mr. Wallace, and Miss Stoll helped with the production duties. Six seniors had cast parts in the Operetta, The Mikadon. These were: Joyce Prichard, Jim Walker Peggy Crawford, Virginia Boaz, Dolores Kelley, and Keith Gallehugh. Y Fifteen members ofthesenior class were admitted to National Honor Society: Ruth Logan, Betty Campbell Allie Kay Grove, Keith Gallehugh, Evelyn Campbell, Mary Anne Bell, Joyce Prichard, Carol Mahr, Peggy Crawl ford, Pat Connor, Lilah Laughlin, Anita Adams, Allan Andrews, Richard Sambol, and Joe Wray. Now after four years of accomplishment,we, the seniors of 1949 must leave our successes and experiences as landmarks on the road to success-for others who follow-that they may accomplish, as we did, the maximum amount of happiness and unity throughout their journey here. In our memories forever will remain these years, and as we leave, we take with us these words LET YOUR STEPS NOT FALTER ON THE PATH OF TIME: SUCCESS IS AHEAD, NOT BEHIND.U R. L. One of the best bands in the parade boomed over the loud speaker as Washing- ton's band rounded a corner and marched past the announcer of the American Royal Parade. In their red and blue uniforms, the band gave performances at football games and a special drilling routine at Homecoming. Mr. Roberts received several invitations for the band to appear at various places during the year. Decked out as ladies and gentlemen of Japan, the members of the chorus reacted with shouts and ringing cheers to the various turns that the story of the Mikado took, and proved themselves a worthy musical organization. Besides the Mikado , the chorus presented the annual Christmas vespers, and took part in the League musical fest- ival at Olathe. Throughout the halls the songs that were sung in the morning's chorus rehearsal can be heard for the remainder of the day. Mr. Roberts enjoys the ups and downs of singing as much as the chorus does. 5 FOUR TH ROW: B. Nye, B.Maupin, R. Klee, J. Thompson, B. Nelson, I Rosentreter, R. Porter, B. Dooley, C. Olson, M. Walker. Right in season was the Junior Play, 'A Case of Springtime, which the class of '50 presented April 19. The three-act comedy, directed by Mrs. Vivian McCaffrey, was a rol- licking, fast-moving story involving Bob Parker, his family, friends, and the ever-mindful P. T.A. ladies. Hidden in the castle of the Winter Wonderland , the royalty of the Hat- chet Ball stepped out of their snow castle to face cameramen and crowds, and be the honored participants in a dance all their own. .To- anne Rosentreter and Frank Bigham reigned as Queen and King. The Hatchet Ball is one of Washington's prettiest affairs, and this year's Winter Wonderland was a perfect setting for light hearts and danc- ing feet. Beneath the lights on the night of nights, Homecoming, the Royalty made a beautiful spectacle for the crowd of Washington fans. Queen Evelyn Herdman and King Nick Eisxnan were the royal couple. Provided with a special seat for the remainder of the game, the Royalty are perhaps the most honored students at Washington, and are nobility for at least one night. . Cr. Clark, B. Cummings, J. Under the able direction of Coach Edgar Eikermann and Bud Foster, and with weeks of strenuous practice the gridsters turned in a season to be remembered. After the first game with Leavenworth a person might have thought we had a lemon, because we took a shellacing to the tune of 25 to O. The second game told a different story, when the Olathe Deaf School was beaten by a 27-19 score. The victory Serenade had begun in earnest when the Olathe Eagles suc- cumbed, 13-6, to our scrappy band of Wildcats. After the Olathe game, the Wildcats really began to throw that pigskin into high gear. In the last five games the W.H.S. gridsters were not scored on,while scoring 134 points them- selves. The scoreless foes were Rosedale, Paola, Turner, Bonner Springs and Osawatomie. The demobilization of Turner put a damper on their homecoming as the Bears lost 32 to O. The glory goes to the boys, for Turner was no push over. It took good clean football to rack up that score. The mauling of Bonner made our League record complete with no defeats to receive the championship of the East Kansas League. In the line Edgar Grafke and Bob DuBois were stand-outs. These boys next year will give anybody a run for their money in the tackle and center spots , respectfully, on the varsity team. The Wildcat seconds had a very successful season as they ended upwitha 14-3 record. This shows Washington will have a team to fear next year. The starting five were B. Trout, P. Wheatley, E. Grafke, W. Terry, and D. Cooper, but the others played lots of ball and showed lots of possibilities. The Wildkittens had a fair show- ing with 6 wins and 9 losses. They won over such teams as Leaven- worth, Turner, Olathe, and Bon- ner. A close game with Rosedale showed that we should have a chance for the East Kansas Lea- gue when these boys are seniors.
