Mr. Rabeneau is responsible for student management, while Mr. Bray is responsible for counseling and instruction. Mrs. Smith provides services on the school’s curriculum. And finally. Dr. Talken, who is our principal at W.H.S. Let’s thank the administration for working so hard to make Washington the best! 7 Mr. Lane WASHINGTON Mrs. Polland Mrs. Real Mr. Stull Will it never end? So what exactly is a counselor? It’s someone to turn to when there’s an error in your schedule, when your hav¬ ing problems in a particular class, when you need some help in choosing the right college, or when you just need someone to talk to. Fortunately here at WHS we have four super counselors who, by getting involved and proving to us how much they care, make deal¬ ing with the ups and downs of high school all that much easier. 8 COUNSELORS And tor 3rd period we’ll put you in ... Paperwork, paperwork, paperwork . . Well don’t just stand there, c’mon in! Don’t Ya Just Love Em? Just wait. I’ll be right there. Yes ma’am, he’s doing just fine I assure you. It sure is a fine day. No doubt it would appear far from great. And although they’re rarely shown the appreciation they deserve, it’s the diligence and dedication of our janitorial staff that helps to make our campus a beautiful place. FRESHMEN “Come on surfin’ now, everybodys learning how, come on surf safari with me!” It’s time to hit the beach for the coolest surf contest ever with Hank the Husky pulling out into first place. Sudden circum¬ stances occur and it seems as if Hank has drowned. The truth is that he’s really been captured by the Moreau Mariners. Washing¬ ton is shocked and upset at the loss. That night at the Homecom¬ ing football game in which we’ re losing Hank appears giving spirit to all and enabling the Huskies to win the game! Make love not war. SOPHOMORES It was like any other day, until she walked in and told of the horrid crime. Someone had stolen the spirit of WHS. The clues presented led me to a bar where I met up with Papaya Joe. After countless tips, I finally got some info I could use, besides being able to pick a mean papaya. After traveling to the beauty parlor and then the shoe store, I came upon the trail of Big Foot, Little Foot. The trail led to his hang out where I recovered the stolen spirit. 37 JUNIORS The lights dim, an eerie silence occures, and an old man appears whispering, “Gather round children and listen as I tell you the story of Hank and the Beanstalk.” Junior spirit shines in an old fashioned fairytale depicting Hank ' s crusade for the anecdote to cure Washingtons loss of spirit. Courageously he climbed the beanstalk and lifted the bottle of anecdote from the wicked Giant. But the Giant did not give up so easily and pursued Hank until upon reaching the bottom Hank axed the beanstalk. Thus enabling him to restore the spirit of Washing¬ ton High. Juniors jammed in gym. SENIORS The Seniors take Center Stage, battling it out in lip sinc versions of STV. Bands from all schools competed to be picked to represent their Spirit of true unity and pride. Only one of the schools outshone all of the others. Singing Louie Louie, the Seniors of Washington High topped them all, capturing not only the featured spot on STV, but the trophy for Spirit Week also. Seniors capture trophy. 42 43 MR. To meet the designated deadlines took a lot of hard work and diligence on the part of everyone as each person was responsible for completing his her own layouts, choosing photographs, and typing copysheets. Each page of this book represents an enormous amount of effort and dedication, and although completing this yearbook was certainly no easy job. somehow it was successfully done Congratulations Staff! HATCHET Trade Onstad (Editor) The bi weekly publication of the Hatchet was produced by a number of dedicated students and a terrific advisor. The Hatchet makes current news, past news, and upcoming events available to students at Washington. FOREIGN EXCHANGE Hi, my name is Pierre Herbaud and I am from France. I am 18 years old and I came to the United States with an organization called Youth For Understanding. I have been to England twice on a student exchange program and I really enjoyed it. I started learning English when I was 11 years old. I came here to reach a higher level of proficiency in speaking English, to be in contact with the Ameri¬ can way of life, and to get some ideas concerning the development of the American society. I am having a good time over here and I have found that the people are very nice. I enjoy meeting new people and spending time with my host family, Mr. and Mrs. Rodgers. Teenagers are a lot different here than in France. When I return home at the end of the school year, I plan to attend a university in Marseille or Paris as I have already passed my “baccalaureat” to work for an airline company. Hello. Most American teenagers would like to visit Europe and likewise European teenagers want to see America. I am very curious and I love to travel. I decided, then, to drop everything and to become a Belgian exchange student (even though I feel more American than Belgian). This continent is so different, incomparable, gigantic, and interesting. This is the most exciting year of my life. I ll be glad to go back to Belium but I know that I’ll miss America a lot (and I ' ll be in trouble with my French). I am sure that I will come back again and see you in a few years. “Amicalement,” Martine. My name is Omaira Rivera and I’m from Panama, a fun little country with a lot of soul. It has been a great experience to come to the United States, since in my country, America is very popular. Now I have the chance to really get to know how the Americans really are and not just in the movies. Maybe Americans will get the chance to get a sample of my little teenagers paradise. My name is Tarja Kaipainen and I am your Finnish exchange student. I came here on the 14th of August and I will leave on the 13th of June. I’ve enjoyed my year here a lot. I have many good friends here and it is going to break my heart when it comes time to go home. School is boring everywhere, but I like Washington very much. When I am back home, I’ll be going to college. Someday, hopefully, I want to be a veterinarian. I want to say “Thanks” to all my teachers and especially to my family. They are great, Mr. and Mrs. Lucas and my sister Jackie! It’s great when home’s for us. I will never forget you, Tarja. Me Tarzan You Jane Raise your hand, if you’re sure. It ' s Showtime TROT TURKEY Will John s real date please stand up? We got the beat. 82 WINTER Hey, Lance, Turn around. Trying to make the most of standing in line for pictures. All J.V. squads were eliminated and the Varsity squads were increased in size. This did not mean however, that the Junior Varsity sports were forgotten by the spirit leaders. Every week an alternating portion of each squad was present and cheered on both the J.V. and Varsity teams. The girls adjusted magnifi¬ cently to a new and unfamiliar routine, and all should be commended on a job well done. ACTION KICKOFF! The 1986 Husky football team featured a young squad with only six Lettermen returning from last season’s NCS Semi finalist. Because 29 seniors have departed from that glori¬ ous bunch, local sports columnists wrote off the Huskies in preseason about their chances of repeating their champion¬ ship status. In fact, no writer expected them to finish higher than fifth place. But boy, did those Huskies prove them wrong. Not only did the young team improve and mature as the year went along, but they were in first place for five weeks and found themselves playing for the league cham¬ pionship in the last game of the season. Unfortunately, their bid for a third consecutive trip to NCS came up short as they were defeated, but not without a fight, 21-7 by Mission San Jose. This young Husky team has done a great job this year and will definitely be a great threat in the MVAL next year. “We love you. Huskies!” 169 HOMECOMING 1986 Jamal Norwood makes a cut. Why do I subject myself to such torture? “SWIMMERS TO THE BLOCKS, PLEASE.” O.K. I can handle this. Hmm, is my cap on tight? I hope it doesn’t fall off. There is nothing worse than going into your turns and feeling it slowly slip off your head. “ LANE 3 TO THE BLOCKS. THIS IS THE 500 YARD FREESTYLE. TIMERS, THAT IS 20 LENGTHS OF THE POOL. TAKE YOCJR MARK.” BANG!!! Anyway, it seems we all made it to the water together. Hey, this isn’t so bad. The first turn, it felt great. Come on, hold back a little this is a long race. Well, what goes through a person’s mind now varies from swimmer to swimmer. You can have a super advanced swimmer, who is thinking to increase their kick to a 6 beat or to breathe every 6th or 8th stroke. Then you have the semi-serious hopeful swimmer, who is thinking, ”1 think I can, I know I can, NO PAIN! Hmm, maybe tonight I’ll have a mushroom pizza with extra sauce.” Well, now I’ve hit the 200 mark. I’m slowing down. I want to be able to sprint at the end. O.K. that’s real cute. Please quit bobbing the counter. Sure that’s fine just take out the counter before I can even focus on it. It ' s a good thing I learned how to count in the 1st grade. Do, Do, Do. So now I’ve reached the final 200. Only 8 more laps. Fudge, there goes the cap. It’s almost torture to turn. With each turn the cap falls a centimeter or two. The lungs are starting to wheeze. All you can do is push. My worst fear — Having to sprint the final 100. Now what goes through your mind? Usually the Rocky Theme and The Little Train Who Could. You can do it. This is called positive thinking time. Sometimes it gives you that little extra push to make it. What is this? Year, it’s the bright orange counter designating the last lap! I’m going to finish! I’m going to make the final turn with zeal and determination. Now it comes down to who can dig deeper into their gut. I’m digging, but will it be enough? All I hear are the bubbles of air coming out my mouth. Only about 10 more yards. I hear the crowd. My arms are burning NO PAIN blares through my mind. I touch, she touches. Who won? It’s not important. The thrill of the 500 is what makes it appealing to the swimmer. A real swimmer is not afraid of an event. You can get nervous, but fear is not a part of the sport. 224 SENIORS LEFT TO RIGHT: Stacy Wheeler, Kristi Duke, Renee Chamblin, Jana Stewart, Lenora Shipman.
