H appiness is ... a warm puppy? Well, maybe sometimes, but it is also the feeling we all get from being a Husky. Granted, everyone has their bad days when they ' d rather do anything than come to school and take that dreaded biology test they know they ' ll fail, or give that English report in front of so many people. However, such misery was easily overcome when we experienced the much more common feeling of happiness — cheering a winning team, finally under¬ standing that math problem, winning a match, or meet¬ ing a new friend. Such happiness was seen and heard constantly this year with sparkling smiles, bellowing cheers, and ecstatic shrieks of joy. U nity was an important factor at Washington. Never was this more evident than at sports events or at rallies when students came out to cheer, offer support, and egg their team on. Our athletes responded by providing their loyal fans with exciting matches and winning records. This feeling was also carried into the classrooms and the hall¬ ways. Students were more than willing to stop here and there to talk to old friends and meet new ones while teachers, once again, devoted their extra time to help out. Everyone ' s willingness to cooper¬ ate and to cheer on the school brought the Huskies together S tyle: mohawks, flat-tops, afros. or spikes — which hair style do you like? Coiffeurs from the vanguard to the conservative weren ' t the only styles on campus. This year, we were reac¬ quainted with paisly. which joined the realm of fash¬ ion here along with flowery prints, varsity jackets, rolled up pants, tee-shirts and blue jeans. These, however were only fads Whatever our students did, they put their own stamp on it. Originality, cre¬ ativity, and sophistication were styles of the Husky! K nowledge, the accumulation of information for the benefit of the people. To gain it is not always an easy task. Nagging parents, per¬ sistant teachers, thick textbooks, and late nights had to be tolerated by each student. However terrible it may seem at times, the students here realize that learning is a primary goal at Washing¬ ton, and we are reminded of this fact whenever we have troubles and need the help of a teacher or other faculty member. The time they are willing to spend with us makes us realize the importance of school and knowledge. I ndividuality can often times be destructive to a group ' s purpose, but what each person adds makes for a better whole. At Washington, the environment is perfect for students to contribute their personalities to the school ' s character. Ath¬ letes, funny people, and serious students all blend together to make Washington what it is. E ntertaining the students during school hours was a main concern this year. As a result, teachers and the faculty put in a little extra effort. Science teachers found it useful to demon¬ strate lessons through the use of bowling balls, bike tires, or even soup cans. The bizarre core of English teachers encouraged the abstract, the sublime, and the altogether different ideas swimming around in students ' heads. Students looked forward to visiting the outrageously decorated rooms they had helped to create. Lunch time offered music to our ears, rallies, class competition and intramural sports. ■I pirit is the fuel that keeps a school going. Nothing during the year can be done effi- k—7 ciently if the student body isn ' t behind it all the way. From the moment the year starts, efforts are made to help the new students fit in and to make the old ones feel more at home. Spirit isn ' t just a simple word to describe a ghost, a drink, or a feel¬ ing. It ' s an idea harbored by each student. It ' s the pride in the school, the enthusiasm behind the ef¬ fort, and the happiness that results when the goal is reached. This year happiness, unity, style, knowl¬ edge, and individuality, and entertainment were some of the forces that went into building indelible spirit of the HUSKIES. ‘of Woshingfcn 1 Vashingt nian l| Mr Stuart Lane graphs taken of tfcerr ‘Friendly. WE THANK ADMINISTRATION PRINCIPAL: DARYL TALKEN The never ending role of administrator can be quite a demanding task. Here at W.H.S.. we are lucky to have five administrators to teach us all about the wonderful world of learning. They are the people that teach us all about referrals, calling parents, and best of all how to spend our Saturday mornings. This year the administration staff has been divided into sections according to their tasks. Mr. Bray provides services on counseling and instruction, while Mrs. Smith provides services on curriculum and instruction. Mr. Rabeneau attends to students whose last names begin A-L, just as Mr. Snyder attends to students whose last names begin M-Z. Mr. Talken, on the other hand, serves as our principal. Their skit reflected the past summer ' s box office smash A View to a Kill . On the night before the big Wash- ington-lrvington game, Hank, the se¬ cret of Washington ' s victory, was ab¬ ducted. The Student Council held an emergency meeting and immediately agreed to call in James Bond, Jr., 0087. Despite, or maybe because of, the bungling of his lovely new assistant. Bond was able to locate where Hank was being held: Gilligan ' s Island. After staging a swift commando raid. Hank was freed And Bond? Well . The Juniors ' action packed perfor¬ mance earned them a tie for second place. And their spirit lasted the whole week as peo¬ ple dressed up for fun days as Camp Day, Designer sheets Day, Gladbag Day, and Army Day. J A M E S B O N D 34 iU TES H ✓ You better watch out, you better not pout, you better not cry. I ' m telling you why, the evil Viking is coming to town. No, no, that isn ' t right. Unless you ' re talking about the Sophomores ' skit. It seems that once upon a time, on the outskirts of Fremont, there lived an evil Viking. And one dreary morning, the Viking woke up and decided to wreck all the schools in town. So off he went. One by one, the schools fell. Nobody could stop the Viking, not even the mighty Mission warriors. Then finally, the Viking came upon Washington, and at its gates stood Hank. As the Viking drew closer. Hank rushed out and at¬ tacked him. And after a fierce battle, the Viking was driven off and Washington was saved! The Sophomores ' superb showmanship earned them a tie for second place. The other days that were selected included Beach Day, Western Day, Bum Bag lady Day, and Love and Peace Day. 3 sE5 35 These are the voyages of the Freshmen Federation. Their mis¬ sion. to seek out and explore, to boldly go where no class has gone before. Do these lines sound familiar? Well, they should, those were the lines that launched the Freshmen skit. In response to an oncoming fleet of Irvington invaders, the Freshmen Federation (FRF) hastily sent out a starcruiser to the outlying planets of Sophmortas, Juni¬ per, and Seniorities. Its mission, to establish contact and unite their respective forces into one against the Irvington threat. Braving meteor showers and hostile aliens, the FRF suc¬ ceeded at their mission. And the next solar day. on the field of football, the Irvington forces were F repelled! The Freshmen ' s fine performance also earned them a tie for second place Their selection of days, which included Hawaiian Day. Safari Day. E Athletic Day. and the traditional Orange and Black Day, showed that while they were new at this, they did know what was going on. Good job. Freshmen! A R L E S S F R E S H M E N 36 1ST PLACE You may have heard of Band-Aid, Live-Aid, and maybe even Kool-Aid, but if you missed Spirit-Aid, then you missed it all. Spirit-Aid was sponsored by the Senior Class in an attempt to stop the ever growing threat of Irving- tonitis. MCed by Peewee Herman, the show featured guest perfor¬ mances by the Freshmen, the Soph¬ omores, and the Juniors. While these opening acts were good, they were dwarfed by the awesome sound quality of the Seniors ' live Rock Band finale. This extravaganza raised enough spirit to put an end to Irving- tonitis forever. For their imagination and creativ¬ ity, the Seniors were awarded the trophy for first place. They picked a number of unique and fun days for their last Spirit Week and these in¬ cluded Saharra Day. Injury Day, Peace and Freedom Day, Concert Day, and to round it off, the tradi¬ tional Orange and Black Day. Great job. After serv¬ ing as Vice President of the Class of 1986, he moved on to become President. These, however, weren ' t his only accomplishments. Kevin sacrificed his precious homework time to be an A Period Representa¬ tive and a Spirit Week activist for three years and a tennis player for another two. This year, he was also a Hatchet reporter. Kevin, with his willingness and hard working atti¬ tude, added so much life to the school. This is the kind of Mr. Husky that really represents the essence and spirit of WHS. Good job, Kevin! The 1985-86 Homecoming game was held the Saturday im¬ mediately after Spirit Week. This year the Huskies played against the Irvington Vikings. The score read 7-0 in favor of the Huskies just before halftime. The halftime festivalties began as the soon to be crowned royal queen and princesses were chaufferred onto the field in cars courtesy of Ash Studios. Lisa Dinh was crowned the new queen by last year ' s queen, Kelly Stange. The Seniors were also announced the first place winners of Spirit Week, and Kevin Chun, the senior president accepted the trophy. The first major produc¬ tion at W.H.S. since 1976, Harvey served as a needed boost to awak¬ en the once dormant drama de¬ partment. With the hard work of Richard Burkhart and the time and devotion of the Harvey cast the production proved to be an excel¬ lent interpretation of an established play. 1. Director Richard L. It includes the make up mis- stress, costume mistress, public rela¬ tions, and the very important tech crew. They build and design the sets, take care of the lighting and curtain and numerous other esstential details. The set for the spring musical proved to be challanging for the staff. There were tree ' s to be sculpted, vines and tiki ' s to be painted, and a phone booth to be designed. The Stagecraft staff met every sixth period as a class. A day didn ' t go by when one could walk by room 201 and not hear the noises of a set being pro¬ duced. The production crew took on a tre¬ mendous amount of responsibility. Why would any¬ one want to be at school that early on a Saturday? To the members of the ski club that ' s an easy question. Fresh powder, moguls, jumps, wind-burned faces, and chapped lips make it all worth while. This year ' s ski club enjoyed day trips to Sierra Ski Ranch on January 11, and to Kirkwood on February 8. Great interest was shown in the winter months, caus¬ ing spaces available for the trips to be filled up in only a few days. With early planning and organization, next year ' s ski club will hopefully share the same success. 62 TRAGOS COMOS Aside from the tremendous reviv¬ al he brought to Washington ' s dra¬ ma department, Mr. Burkhart also organized the formation of the Tra- gos Comos club. Trago Comos, a Latin team meaning tragedy com¬ edy, is a term of drama, which is what this club is all about. The orga¬ nization of the club began towards the end of last year in order to spark students ' interest and plan activities for the following year early. One of these activities was to see the per¬ formance of the musical GIGI at Cal State Hayward. After the show, students had the opportunity to speak with cast members and gain additional information in the field of dramatic arts. With continued and increased student interest, more such excursions will be enjoyed by the Tragos Comos Club. OFFICERS — President Dalrie Summers. Music Rep : Sam Zabor. Smile for the camera. 1 r The Washingtonian staff showed their hard work and determination once more on making the 1986 year¬ book. The effort of the edi¬ tors with nudges here and there from the advisor. Mr. Brower, gave the group an incentive to make this year ' s yearbook special. The experience of putting a yearbook together included making layouts, using pro¬ portion wheels, writing out captions, and mainly work¬ ing efficiently. Our special thanks go to Ash Studios for providing and developing our film, and to Jostens for printing the yearbook. Good job. yearbook staff! Kevin Chun This year 48 students were nominat¬ ed for Husky Awards. They were cho¬ sen by faculty members and Student Council based on their contributions to their class and to school. Applicants submitted their qualifications to a committee composed of the Activities Director, Jr. Class President, counselor and an Assistant Principal. The Husky award is the highest award given to a senior at Washington High. Winners are presented a certificate on Senior Awards Night. BANK OF AMERICA AWARDS PLAQUE WINNERS 74 Each year. Bank of America acknowledges the academic achievements of the top Seniors To be eligible for these awards, students must have at least at 3.0 GPA This year, competition for these prestigious awards was keen as faculty members found it difficult to choose the best students out of the highly qualified fields As a result, disagreements were anything but uncommon Certificate winners were awarded for their overall performance in one subject area over four years, such as mathematics, foreign languages, or English Plaque winners, who became eligible to win between 500 and 2000 dollars in competition against other schools ' honorees. were rewarded for their outstanding achievements in more general subject areas Considering the other deserving students who were nominated, these people have every reason to be proud. Sumits in Geneva did not bring about a treaty but they didn’t make things any worse. That is more than can be said for many of the years other events. In the Middle East and abroad, terrorists kept finding variations on their favorite themes, murder and mayhem. At the eastern rim of the Pacific, the great tectonic plates that make up the earth’s crust gave tremendous shrugs that produced a catastrophic earthquake in Mexico and a volcanic eruption in Columbia killing thousands. 1985 was the worst year in history for air fatalities with the worst being the crash of Japanese flight JAL-123 killing a record 520. NASA mourned the death of seven astronaughts including a school teacher in the space shuttle tragedy and the violent murder of two Fremont girls let us know we’re not just a sleepy little town anymore. Famine stalked millions in East Africa, and no cure has yet been found for AIDS the lethal disease that has caused mass hysteria. Many battle in South Africa for freedom from aparthied and Haiti and the Philippines win their battles to over throw their governments. The Live Aid concerts, with an audience of a billion plus help to feed Africa’s starving and We are the World scored big in aiding the African relief fund. The Chicago Bears dominates the league and completes the season with only one loss beating the New England Patriots in the super bowl. The nation is overtaken with Hulkamania and prince Andrew finally marries. 1985-’86 leaves us with images of sorrow and happiness yet when we look back what will we remember? only time will tell. With this page. I am given the opportunity to express my gratitude to these people. All those who did their pages without complaining, with flair and style, somewhat on time, and had maybe a little bit of fun while doing them, deserve a hand and a thank you from me; thank you. And to all those on the outside who had to put up with our mistakes — thanks for your patience. Special thanks from me go to those who had nothing to do with the yearbook class, but who took their time to help us out either finding names, writing copy, or just suggesting ideas. Little bits of input really add up. Before I go. I ' d like to say that being the editor this year has been a very important job for me, one which I ' m sure I ' ll never forget. I know, of course, that this book isn ' t perfect, but I hope that, despite whatever flaws it may have, it brings back many fond memories of your year at Washington. £ a!lCC L Senior divider page photograph taken by Ronald C.
