This year we welcomed two new adminis¬ trators, Mr. Daryl Talken, principal, and Mr. Mark Adams, assistant principal. A change in administration often brings a change in campus atmosphere. We have witnessed many new clubs and organizations. We have seen the return of Music and Drama to our campus. Faculty participation with the Student Body is undergoing a tremen¬ dous upsurge. Washington ' s future is being shaped now. The students now have more opportunities to become involved with their school than ever before. The 1982-1983 school year surprisingly started off with a very successful ASB sponsored HELLO DANCE which took place on the 10th of Sep¬ tember, 1982, at our very own WHS South Gym. The MUSIC MASTERS mobil sound system supplied the sounds. The dance hours ex¬ tended from 8-11 p.m., with a surprisingly large student turnout. The Class of 1983 showed off their well known class spirit by dressing up for the occasion; shorts, ties, blazers, tennis shoes and even so far as to look punk”. Though the ASB treasury did not make much money out of the dance, the profit lies in how much school spirit was displayed by the students here at WHS. Punk rock 4 3 If you saw cowboys and Indians running around school this year, they were probably members of the junior class on the first day of spirit week. Why? Well, that was the theme of the junior skit, of course! Entitled How WHS Was Won , the class of 1984 took us from a modern day classroom scene, compete with rah-rahs, jocks and nurds, back into history where we saw spirited Husky settlers and calvary beat the brightly painted indian Warriors. The crowd ' s favorite part of the Junior skit, however, was watching the numerous cattle crawling all over the hay-strewn floor! Now, if you didn ' t see Juniors dressed up as Cowboys or Indians, maybe you saw them dressed as punkers, looking gumby, all decked out in formal wear, or in toga ' s and Burger King crowns, because these outfits were all part of the Junior class ' show of spirit that week. And an incredible amount of spirit it was, pulling the class of ' 84 into the second place spot this year. On Tuesday, the Sophomores showed us their spirit with video games as the theme for their skit. They sang and danced and entertained us in tune to such games as Asteroids, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and Space Invaders, which we can all relate to. Although their spirit was high, the Sopho¬ mores took only a fourth place spot in the Spirit Week competition. Well, they still have two more years to work their way to number one, and were off to a good start with some excellent dress up days this year including beach day, punk day, generic day, and gumby day. Better luck next year to the class of 1985. Keep your spirit high! 1. Pac-Man ghosts. 2. Diana. Litha. and Amy. 3. Donkey Kong danc¬ ers. 4. Diana Brum¬ baugh does her dance. 5. The Freshman c lass went aH out for Spirit Week this year, proving that it ' s not only upperclassmen that have spirit But the yearbook staff must ex¬ tend sincere apologies for an unfor¬ tunate accident in which all the color pictures of the freshman skit were lost. Luckily, there were black and white photos taken that Wednes¬ day. as the class presented to us a rousing football game — Washing¬ ton vs. Mission — in 1950 ' s style. The class of ' 86 showed tremendous spirit in their skit, complete with music like Jailhouse Rock and other 50 ' s faves. and were able to bring the other classes into the excitement of the game, in which the Huskies natu¬ rally triumphed! The judges enjoyed pizza while watching the show, and saw the freshman showing spirit all through the week dressed up in space clothes, togas, pajamas, and school colors. 1. The Senior class started out Sprit Week with a show of peace and love on ' 60 ' s day, and kept the spirit level high all week, leading them to a first place victory. Other days, seniors were seen dressed in war attire, all wrapped up in foil, clothed in tourist garb, (complete with cameras, maps, and bermuda shorts), and dressed up in Angel and Devil costumes for their skit, Heaven and the Huskies , presented on Thursday. In Husky heaven, a traitor named Lucy was exiled to Hell, which she named Mission after stealing the Golden Husky for her own selfish kingdom. After several attempts to rescue the Husky, Lord I and his subjects finally succeeded, proving once and for all that Husky spirit al¬ ways triumphs! And Husky spirit was shown exceptionally by the senior class throughout the week. They really worked together, showed a lot of class unity, and had a whole bunch of fun doing it. They made it fun for the judges, too. After bringing them in by wheelchair, the class of 1983 served the judges chicken crepes along wifh Spark¬ ling cider and a dessert. 3 A 5 HOMECOMNG DANCE 82 The year ' s Homecocrxng dance was held r the South Gym on Friday. He has been on the swim team for all four years, held major roles in Spirit Week since Fresh¬ man year, and has been an A-period representative Although his list of “credits ' ' is not overwhelming, it doesn ' t need to be. because Ben is one of those peo¬ ple who is always there, wherever that may be Whether it ' s working in the snack bar at a football game or helping to decorate for Spirit Week, you ' l find Ben. And that is what makes Ben such a deserving Mr Husky. He adds so much life and fun to every activity with just his personality He cheers us on at football games and makes the whole crowd come alive, and it is not unlikely to find him there in a cheerleading uniform or with a big orange “W painted on his chest That is the kind of Mr Husky that really represents the essence and spirit of WHS Thanks Ben! The tension was almost unbearable at halftime of the Varsity game until great screams of joy rang through the audience as Mr SteUe fi¬ nally announced that the new Queen was Allison Hottle! All the princesses were great people, but the school knew that their one choice was Allison She has been deeply involved with the school since her freshman year when she was elected class Secretary. From the start, her dedication grew rapidly and she went on to become an A- period representative. President of the Sophomore class, a member of CSF. ASB Treasurer. PTSA representative. ASB Secretary, and editor of the year¬ book In addition. Allison participated in Spirit Week activities, helped on nu¬ merous committees, is an officer for the new Ski Club, attended leadership conferences, and generally put an enormous amount of time, energy, and effort into everything she did for the school Allison is always an active member of Student Council, unafraid to stand up for the students ' rights and fight the system for fair rules and treat¬ ment Many people don ' t realize all the dedication and service Allison has contributed to Washington High School and all she has done for us. the rest of the student body But maybe the title of Homecoming Queen, which was a big surprise and true honor for Allison, wi give her the credit she truly de¬ serves 31 WASHINGTONIAN STAFF 35 Members- Catherine Mesina, Candi Overstrum. Who is it made of? Why are they there? When do they meet? All of these questions have answers, but how many of the student body can answer them? Prob¬ ably not many, after this, each of you can answer them and get involved. The booster club is made up of W.H.S. parents who have children that participate in sports. They support the sports by attend¬ ing the games and having fund raisers, which give the sports the money they need to support themselves. They had fund raisers going all year round. They included: a flea market, pizza nights, inventories at department stores, pancake breakfasts and dances. This year the boost¬ er club started off in debt, but were able to pay it off and still support W.H.S. athletics. Some of the money the booster club makes goes to: new team uniforms, athletic equipment, transportation for pre-season, out-of-town games, and if students look promising, even special lessons, in that sport in which they ' re interested. The booster club meets the first Tuesday night of each month. Tell your parents and let them become involved in the future. 1. Each year it is awarded to ten out¬ standing seniors for service and dedi¬ cation to the school. This year Stu¬ dent Council nominated about thirty deserving seniors for the award and these students completed a form about themselves for a committee of judges. This committee, comprised of Mr. Stelle, Mr. Lane. Mrs. Polland, Mr. Stull, Mrs. Real, and Junior Class Presi¬ dent Jennifer Overman selected the final ten. The winners have worked hard for Washington over the past four years, each being involved in a variety of activities, from athletics and clubs to scholastic achievement and student government. Out of so many fantastic seniors this year, it was difficult to narrow the choices down to only ten, but the decision had to be made. These then ten people have certainly been an honor to their school, and it is lucky that WHS can thank and honor them with an award like the Husky Award. The award winners for 1983 are Natalie Beauchene, Paula Bond, Allison Hot- tle, Debbie Johns, Kim Lawrence, Kathy Mayes, Kristin McGuire, Ed Ru¬ ben, Bunny Sarmiento, and Diane Sato. The spotlight is on the playing field or court, but some of the credit should go to those who make it all official: the statisti¬ cians.
