HARLAN This year the 1969 Washingtonian is dedi¬ cated to Mrs. Harlan as a way of thanking her for all she’s done for us. Mrs. Harlan has taught at Washington for six years. She is asscteiated with the English depart¬ ment and is highly re¬ garded by her fellow teachers. As yearbook advisor she has really put up with a lot; very late deadlines, lost pictures, pictures that never got taken, cake crumbs all over the room, missing cameras, balancing the budget, and the near fatal censoring of last year’s Washingtonian. Aside from the year¬ book, Mrs. Harlan has been favorite teacher for several consecutive years. She is easy to talk to and many of her former stu¬ dents have made her an unofficial counselor to dis¬ cuss their problems and their joys. To you, Mrs. Harlan, the Washingtonian is re¬ spectfully dedicated. Sounds opinions moving The excitement of a Football Game . . GO! GO ' GO! . . the screams of thfe crowd . Charlie Prior Rhinoceros”, the opening production of the 1968-69 season, was done in a the¬ atrical, cartoon-like style to emphasize the exagger¬ ated, absurd approach of the playwright, Eugene Ionesco. The characters, in the absurd circumstances given them, conform to the standards of their so¬ ciety by changing into rhinoceroses. In our not- much - less - absurd society, given to us by the ad men of the world, this play should cause us to ques¬ tion the accepted and to accept the questionable. 52 Cast of Characters The Waitress.Maddy Goldberg The Grocer ' s Wife. The final curtain falls; the house empties, and nothing is left but the ringing of enthusiastic applause in your ears Now the backstage crews go about their unrewarding work of striking the set, and cleaning up the stage, which was, but a few moments ago, alive with people and action. Mixed feelings are involved, as happy anticipations for the cast party are clouded with the conclusion of hours of hard work, and the ending of a show. This is the backstage part of theatre. 80 Not everything in the Performing Arts area involves major productions. Each student in the Independent Study and Workshop classes has a chance to perform in the Festival of the Arts. While students performed on stage, the Art Department exhibited students work in the foyer. DEBORA BOUTERSE When I came to America from Holland, I expected to land in Michigan and was very surprised to find myself in Fremont. The period of adjustment in a new environment, school, and home took a while, but I suppose it would be for most. Washington High School has taught me so much, in a way that is hard for me to express in English. A culture is difficult for any¬ one to relate to others. Here in this school, I learned the meaning of school spirit. % In Holland, there is no extra-curricular activities os such. My life has never been so busy. In Girls ' Athletics I have participated in many sports; in performing arts, I have been in orches¬ tra and ensembles; and most important I have met many new and wonderful people. I will olways remember Washington; Fremont; United States, warmly thinking of these things. It was indeed an honor for me to be a student here, and thank you all for making my year here a beautiful and memorable one. SEPPI OVERLAET My name is Seppi Overlaet. I come from Antwerp, a harbor in Belgium. I have two sisters and three brothers I live in the Dutch speaking part of Belgium. My mother and my father are both teachers. My hobbies are music, walking, and medieval arts. I like San Francisco and the California hills. The American school system is a whole new experience for me. VERA LUCIA CHAHON My name is Vera Lucia Chahon. I was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, and I am 17 years old. I love classical and modern music. I had ten years of piano and I began to play guitar, but studies kept me too busy, so I had to stop. Languages and arts are other subjects that delight me. I had six years of English and one of French. I intend to continue studying French and begin to take classes of German when I go home. I hove not made up my mind yet about my career. I ' ll probably choose languages or social work I ' ve always desired to travel abroad to know different cultures, people, and customs. I enjoy meeting new people and learning their ways of living. I have a great faith in Exchange Student Programs because they contribute to a better underst anding amongst people of the world. I appreciate this opportunity of living in the U.S. and learning its customs. TAWEEPUN SANPRASERT Despite several unfortunate incidents including a misunder¬ standing with the Fox Security, it can be said that Tal has had little difficulty in adjusting to American life. Taweepun Sanprasert, as he is formally known, is an exchange student from Thailand under the sponsorship of the American Field Service. Formerly a guest at the Mahler’s home, he is now living at the home of junior Cliff Clendenning. Tal has an active and enjoyable life at Washington; his activi¬ ties include being an outstanding varsity soccer player The AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE CLUB has been very active this year. The club has planned many activities, starting off in October by celebrating the birthday of our exchange student from Thailand. Fund drives in November provided the club $600 for its exchange program. Noon activities, such as tug-o-war, guest speakers, and a faculty hula-hoop contest made the February AFS Exchange Week a success. The AFS Club’s goal of the needed $1800 has almost been reached, so we may have an exchange student next year. A Musical Arabian Night March 20, 21, 22,1969 Orrin C. Cross III, Designer and Director Richard Deming, Vocal Director Patricia J. Cross, Choreographer Charles Combs, Technical Director “Kismet” is a fairy tale which takes place one day in ancient Baghdad. The Wazir of Police and his wife of wives, Lalume, enter the Bazaar of the Caravans on a litter carried by four slaves. The Wazir is concerned with the need for money. Lalume has arranged for a loan if the Caliph will marry the Three Prin¬ cesses of Ababu. A poor Poet is captured by Jawan and his Brigands and is brought to their desert tent. Thinking the Poet is Hajj, the Beggar, |awan orders the Poet to remove a curse from his head and reunite him with his missing son. Without knowing how, the Poet agrees for 100 pieces of gold. Marsinah, the Poet’s daughter, buys many things with her un¬ expected money and comes upon old Omar and the Caliph, who is disguised as a gardener. Their attraction for one another is im¬ mediate. The Poet, after pur¬ chasing four slave girls to attend him, is arrested by the Wazir ' s Police for possession of stolen gold which was given to him by Jawan. Brought before the Wazir, the Poet is sentenced to have his right hand cut off. With Lalume’s help, and the grace of Allah, Jawan realizes that the Wazir is his missing son. Impressed with his magic, the Wazir makes the Poet an Emir. The Poet then enjoys the Wazir’s harem and is fed Rahad- adlakum by Lalume. After moving into the palace to take her place as an Emir’s daughter, Marsinah tells her father of her love for the Gardener. Accidentally, the Caliph see Marsinah walk¬ ing through the Wazir’s harem So that the Caliph will marry the Princesses of Ababu, the Wazir quickly makes Marsinah one of his own wives. The Caliph, having lost the girl he loves, decides that he will select a wife from those who come for his hand. The Princess Zubbediya of Damascus performs a belly dance in true Middle-Eastern fashion. Princess Samaris of Bangalore does a formalistic Hindu dance that de¬ scribes the marriage of her destiny to the Caliph. Finally, the three Princesses of Ababu pantomime a hunt to demonstrate how they in¬ tend to keep the Caliph’s table bountifully supplied with wild game. Before the Caliph can make a decision, the Poet, in a feat of magic, drowns the Wazir. Marsinah and the Caliph are reunited; the Poet is sentenced to a lifetime of hard labor with Lalume . . . and they all live happily ever after. The leads and full cast take bows for the 156 member company as the final curtain falls to a standing ovation from a very pleased full house. Malcolm Goodfellow Onstad r Golden UOLF . . . Senior Class organized many Senior ac¬ tivities, along with money making projects for the Senior Ball. We, the Senior Class, give a special thanks to Mr. Agee and Mr. McCaslin for all the time and effort they de¬ voted to our class this year. Katrina Africa r I Gerry Allen Kathy Alonzo GRADUATES OF 1969 ' Those were the days, my friends, we thought they ' d never end. We are Graduates at last. There were many times when some of us thought we wouldn ' t make it, but we did. Many of us have been together since grade school We have come under the influence of many people, and have been involved in experiences that may affect us the rest of our lives. We came with anticipation The teachers crammed all the know¬ ledge they could into our limited high school years. They tried to prepare us for the future and although we may still be naive, it is a beginning and all dreams must start somewhere. Anne Alvarez Mike Alvarez Rita Aguilar Bob Almeida Dennis Amaral Kent Anderson Jim Anzalone Marsha Axelsen Richard Anderson Mike Andrade Four years ago, we entered high school as timid Freshmen, whose only goal was to become upper classmen. We soon became involved in the routine of high school life. At first it was a new and exciting feeling, but soon it became homework, tests, and lectures. Sophomore year started with us looking down on the Freshmen as so young. The Seniors didn ' t seem quite so old and impressive anymore. The big¬ gest excitement the first day was seeing friends you hadn ' t seen all summer. It wasn ' t long, though, before we were once again counting the minutes until brunch, lunch, and finally the end of school. We anxiously awaited the too short weekends and the too few holidays. Sandra Ashton Jeff Askelson Beatrice Ayala Joe Babcock Sherry Antone Angelo Aristo Dean Athos Ralph Bailey Laura Banta Robert Bearce Vicki Beaudoin Steve Benbow Rick Barbero Gordon Becerra Carol Bergmann Terry Barrie Joy Bell John Bethea Gail Bates Beverla Beasley Deborah Bettencourt As Juniors, we began to feel older because we were more than half way through. Our thoughts turned toward the future and the question what after graduation?” We were well established in school by this time and the under-classmen were beginning to look up to us. After a summer that was far too short, Senior year began This was the time we had been anxiously awaiting for the past three years. There was no longer anyone above us to look up to and being Seniors didn ' t hold as much prestige as we had anticipated There were the final games, rallies, tests, and dances, along with the long complicated college applications and the frustrations of trying to find a job It was a year of memories Alan Beverly Loryn Bliss Ed Bonham Dave Bilodeau Ruth Blumer Carol Bougher Kim Biememiller Barbara Blyth Debora Bouterse Toni Bist Forrest Bodily Janet Bower Allan Brenneis Dennis Brown Catherine Browne Dave Buettner Don Bufkin The agony of getting up early on the first day of school . . . mixed-up schedules . . . lockers that won ' t open . . lockers that won ' t close . . first test of the year . . . going to the Round Table after Friday night football games . . . cruising the Jack in the Box Cary Buhler Julie Burk Jim Burnside Jim Burrous Lee Bunting Linda Byrd Rich Campbell Doug Canete Bill Cantrell Manuel Caraballo David Cardoza Robert Carter Michelle Charland Mark Carlson Cathy Casteel Victoria Chavolla Sue Carrillo Steve Castle Steve Chilcote Barbara Carroll Frances Catera Bruce Chmieleski Kathy Christensen Rene Christensen Ann Christiansen Jim Christmas Christine Cipperly I Wayne Collins Anita Cordero Rickey Costa Dan Costello Heidi Couse Elizabeth Cousineau Vern Cruz SAT and ACT tests early on a Saturday morning . cinch notices . . . faking your way through a test you didn ' t study for . . . Everyone self- conscious in caps and gowns, giggling nervously. Pomp and Circumstance begins to play, the signal to march out on the field The procession goes slowly with everyone taking his assigned chair. The speeches begin, no one really listening In¬ stead, most of the class is thinking about the past years and then realizing that it is the last time that the class of ' 69 will all be together. Nostalgia creeps in but is stopped by the delivery of diplomas. This is really the end. Your name is called. You step forward, receive it, and march back to your seat. You are now an alumnus of Washington High. You watch the others in your class walk up, the boy you fought with in the third grade, your best friend in the seventh, and the first person you went out with The music begins and it is now time to sing the Alma Mater for the last time. The mood is one of happiness mixed with fears of new responsibilities. Those were the days, Oh yes, those were the days. Now we are free with uncertain plans for the days to come The future is filled with fears, frustrations, hopes and dreams. There ' will be many unexpected changes in our lives in the years to come We are the hope of tomorrow. The prob¬ lems facing us are difficult ones. Will we meet the challenge? 206 HUSKY AWARDS Receiving Husky Awards for their service to the school were Mike Alvarez, Linda DeMetrick, Mary Dickson, Monty Hobbs, Carry Losk, Patty McGrath, Kirsten Olson, Cori Rasmussen, Creg Silva, Penny Williams, and not pictured Melody Montgomery. f BANK OF AMERICA AWARDS Bill MacGregor - -end - M Si-BT Bank of America win¬ ners are nominated by the various departments within the school. The principal function of the NMSQT is to identify students of exceptional in¬ tellectual promise. Semifinalists become finolists after they have been endorsed by their schools, have sub¬ mitted a Semifinalist Information Form, and have sub¬ stantiated their NMSQT scores on a separate examina¬ tion. Every Finalist is awarded A Certificate of Merit in recognition of his distinguished performance, and each is given careful consideration for a Merit Scholarship. The selection of Merit Scholars involves the evaluation of each Finalist ' s ability, achievement, and goals. NATIONAL MERIT Receiving Letters of Commendation were Barbara Carroll, Barbara Ferrell, John Deubert, and Ginger Koger. These letters are awarded to students who score in the high per¬ centile in the NMSQT but not quite high enough to be Semifinalists. They are highly regarded by colleges. D. A. R. This year the DAR award was given to Melody Montgomery. This award is presented to the senior girl with the highest record of good citizenship both in her school and community. It was the job of the senior girls to decide who they thought deserved this honor. Tomorrow the first day of the rest of your life 7T2.-39W .
