t FACULTY . CLASSES.... ACTIVITIES Various “happenings” occurred during the ’66-’67 school year. Some were educational and some were social, but none will be for¬ gotten. Each event will bring back unforgettable memories in years to come . . . We had a Hank-ering for a rally. The “mod” year begins. Susan Spotless says— Maestro, if you please. 4 . .. Wo will all remember victories and defeats, “loss of privileges, goals attained, and each will play a part in molding the character of those individuals who have benefited from these experiences. Groovy Seniors Thank goodness for lunch! Our new queen The “rail boy” controversy Maybe next year . . . 5 DEDICATION Mr. Orrin C. TEACHERS IN ACTION All right, who stole the frog? 17 TO THE SENIORS HOPE FOR THE FUTURE It has been said that the future depends upon the younger genera¬ tion. This sounds trite, I know, but Americans have a strong belief in the future. In fact, our faith in the future is one of the basic tenets of our democracy. We count on youth to make changes which will make this country a better place in which to live. I am suggesting to you one area in which improvement is needed. Lately I have noticed many adults violating what I consider one of the basic principles of a democratic organization; that is, after a prob¬ lem has been presented and discussed, and a solution has been voted upon, the minority refuses to follow the dictates of the majority. It has always been my understanding that when a democratic group brings something to a vote, its members are agreeing beforehand to abide by the results of that vote. Not so today! More and more, the minority wants to “pick up its marbles and go home,” because the vote did not turn out in its favor. 1 am not advocating for one minute that the minority cease working for a change. It is not only their right, it is their responsibility to work for that change. However, it is also their responsibility to abide by the dictates of the majority until such a change is brought about by a new vote. 1 fear that our continued failure to abide by the “rules of the game” will lead to the destruction of democratic rule. I believe our only hope lies in you, the younger generation, and in the generations that will fol¬ low. I am counting on you to restore one of the basic rules we inherited from the Generation of ’76 — the rule of the majority. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS President Greg Antone Treasurer Mary James We, our generation, will be responsible for the making of the nation in a few years. Human wisdom is needed to do a good job. Exhibiting both personal courage and conviction, as you have in the past, will enable you to attain this wisdom. Laura Schwartz President Donna vonEdelkrantz Vice-President FOREIGN Rosa Maria Aceveda Noriega, our for¬ eign exchange student from Piura, Peru, high in the Andes Mountains, says, Hola! While attending Washington, Rosa stayed with junior Maureen Mor¬ row. Of her stay in America Rosa says, “I think that the United States is a lovely country, and I would like to re¬ turn soon. I find it hard to explain all the wonderful experiences I have had.” An Hola comes from our other South American exchange student, Guillermo Jose Domenech Martinez, from Montevideo, Uru¬ guay. He has come to us under the sponsor¬ ship of the “Youth for Understanding” program. He finds our teenagers and those of Uruguay to be very much alike and finds the major differences between our countries to be economic, with the United States having “a higher standard of living and a stronger middle class.” 100 EXCHANGE In his native Trbea-Trarbach, Germany, Bernd Pfalzgraf greets friends with a “Wie geht es dir?” His stay with Mark Bromley Bernd describes as “an experience!” He summarizes his feelings about the United States with the comment, “Well, it cer¬ tainly is different.” His only complaint is that “American girls play soccer—a disgrace!” This past year Cory Ricker represented Washington High in Bethal, Transvaal, South Africa. The School she attended was Hoogenhout High, a school with an enroll¬ ment of 550 students. Cory comments, “I was very happy staying with the Hoffman family and their two daughters, Annemare and Elefriede.” 101 Art Editor Paul Johannessen ANNUAL STAFF Advisor Mrs. Harlan Activities Sandra Clark, Zoeann McCarthy, Peggy Washburn Ads Deby Reina, Robbie Haak Editor Linda Snyder Seniors Dennis Davis, Lynn Gygax Faculty Tom Waterman Features Karen Carlson Classes Cherie Upshaw, Bev Rae, Rita DeRenzi Ray Osborn Sp , Averil Jenney, Larry Olson 102 HATCHET STAFF REPORTERS: First Row —Alice Rodriguez, Mary Corder, Duncan Cail. The first workshop was presented November 4, 1966. It consisted of four plays. They were “Bell, Book, and Candle,” “Impromptu,” “A Doll’s House,” “The White Dove,” and “Joint Owner in Spain.” Ralph Mahler, Kathy Hattig, Charlie Martinez, Linda Venable. WORKSHOP The acting and directing classes of Wash¬ ington High presented their second Drama Workshop production January 13, 1967. There were seven plays presented by various students from the classes of Mrs. Lyla Ander¬ son and Mrs. Pat LaRock. The plays were the “Bickersons,” with Judi Mento and Scott Young; “Fortune Is a Cowboy,” with Cathy Silva and Chris Jungermann; a musical pantomime by Yvonne Moy; “Of Mice and Men,” with Jim Sills and Tom Heskett. “Tea and Sympathy” featured Lou Wil¬ liams and Sandy Woodmansee, and “The Monster” was enacted by Linda Bola, Linda Demetrick, Jory Faucett, Sally Fernandez, Susan Robinson, Ginny Steele and Ralph Mahler. Between the scenes, four little old ladies exchanged snappy repartee. “Bickersons” “The Glass Menagerie” was presented on February 9th and 10th by the stu¬ dents of Washington High under the direction of Or- rin C. Cross III. This poign¬ ant drama captivated the entire audience with its sensitive portrayal of man’s loneliness. MENAGERIE 125 CONCERTS All concerts presented at Washington High included the symphonic band, the orchestra, and the chorus. Mr. Cross and Mr. Thornburg shared directing honors for the Fall and Spring Concerts, and several Ensemble Concerts. CHORUS First Row: K. Sanders, R. Foote, M. Garcia, T. Dewey, C. Silva, L. The central story concerns Ensign Nellie For- bush, a young Navy nurse, and Emile de Becque, a greying, wealthy French planter. The two are in love, though Nellie fears obstacles to their marriage because of their disparate backgrounds. The secondary love story is one of the most poignant in the literature of the theatre. It is that of a young Marine, Lt Joseph Cable, and Liat, the beautiful young Tonkinese daughter of Bloody Mary, the native woman who sells souvenirs to the men stationed on the is¬ land. When de Becque accompanies Cable on a dangerous mission to another island, Nellie realizes that nothing is as important as the love she feels for the Frenchman. Their story ends happily. Background is provided by the vivid tropical settings, by romantic Bali Hai in the distance, and by the varied assemblage of sailors, Marines, and Seabees on the island. South Pacific was performed on April 28 and 29 and May 5 and 6. “101 pounds of fun — that’s my little honey bun.” “Lootelian, come with me. You have good time. Two performances were offered at Washing¬ ton High School: Friday, December 16 and Saturday, December 17. The total performance lasted fifty minutes. The opera, described by its composer, Gian-Carlo Menotti, as an “opera for children because it tries to recapture my own childhood,” enhanced the Christmas season. Orrin C.
