THE 63 WASHINGTONIAN STAFF Would Like to Wish You Well on Your . . . SUCCESS CLASS ES 24 TIVITIES DUCTIONS The many excellent term projects and semester reports which are turned in by the students of Wash¬ ington High School are evidence of our fine library. With the help and supervision of our librarian, Miss Underhill, stu¬ dents realize the pleasure and un¬ derstanding which can be derived from books. 4 Since 1892 new faces, courses, and buildings have come into the scene at Washington High. For seventy years, these halls have reflected the feelings of ambition ond deter¬ mination from those students who have taken from it education, and given to it their loyalty and pride. ADVENTURE... AMBITION . . . ANGUISH . . . AVERAGES... ACHIEVEMENT . . AWARDS . . . 5 Pride and devotion should be felt by every student, through his own feelings and accomplishments. These accomplishments are ex¬ pressed either by individual o r united achievements. Education is a stream of possibil¬ ities and knowledge, which flows unceasingly from the classes of Washington High School. 7 V E’ER TURN BACK” To thee our Alma Mater Our thoughts will e ' er turn back We rally round the banner The Orange and the Black The light and truth and knowledge Forever will prevail 0 Washington we love thee All hail! All hail! 9 DEDICATION The class of 1963 takes pride and pleasure in dedicating this year ' s Washingtonian to Mr. Don Wolfe, our Vice Principal. We wish to express our gratitude to Mr. Wolfe, whose patient understanding and pleasant personality have greatly helped student morale. His warm sense of humor and wonderful spirit have helped to create a pleasant and friendly atmosphere at Wash¬ ington High School. The entire student body joins with us in expressing our appreciation and admiration. To you, Mr. Wolfe, this Washing¬ tonian is respectfully dedicated. DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION William A. Koller, District Superintendent This has truly been a very fine year for the Washington Union High School District. Out¬ standing in its growth, the Washington High School has had significant changes occur: The addition of a very fine science wing; the refur¬ bishing of the older center; and the inclusion of flexible scheduling and team teaching. We have all tried in every way to develop an educational program that would prepare the students for the every day world in which they are graduating. May I thank all of you for the cooperation you have extended to your professional staff. Thank you. William A. Koller Glenn R. Seventeen or eighteen years ago, when you were born into this rapidly moving world, a flame was lighted within you—a desire to learn about your new world. Think back to the days when you were a child and to those many questions you asked. Where do the stars go in the daytime? What makes the wheel go around? The curiosity of a young child is seemingly endless. I suspect that this inner flame is about the same size in all of us on the first day, but as time passes, something different happens to each individual For some, there is more fuel added, and the flame grows brighter as the years pass; but for others, the flame gradually dies down, so that there is just the slightest flicker remaining. No matter how small the flame becomes, don ' t let it go out. Nurture it; keep it alive! As long as there is the faintest spark, there is a chance it will burn brightly again It needs only the proper fuel. During the past twelve years, we, your teachers, have tried to provide that fuel, exper¬ iences which would keep your flame burning brightly. We have succeeded in some cases and failed miserably in others. Regardless of the outcome, it now becomes your individual responsibility to keep the inner light aglow, for as long as there is a future, there is hope that the flame will burst forth again No one has expressed the importance of keeping the flame alive more adequately than Albert Schweitzer in his Memoirs of Childhood: Sometimes our light goes out but is blown again into flame by an en¬ counter with| another human being Each of us owes the deepest thanks to those who have rekindled this inner light. For each of you, that encounter with another human being may be just around the corner, so . . . don ' t let the flame go out! 26 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Karen Updegraff, Senior Representative Linda Hursey, Secretary TOP TEN Corol Weed HUSKY AWARDS Diane Delfs Judi Astin Bruce MacGregor Karen Henderson In I960, Mr. Irving Hird instituted the giving of the Husky Awards to gradua ting Seniors. 1 purpose is to give recognition for out¬ standing school service Our congrat ulations to these hard-working Huskies! o Mary Ann Hardy 3 Connie Walther Ralph Reichert SENIOR MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Bruce MacGregor, Connie Walther FAVORITES BEAU AND BELLE Jim McLane, Pat Andersen 3 CLASS Carol Abbott John Accinelli Nancy Adams Tom Allison Pat Andersen 32 Glenn Armstrong Wanza Adams Rosemarie Alexander Judith Astin Roy August Judy Bohr Lee Baker Jane Balch Barbara Baroa Judy Barr John Barreras Mike Barrett Loretta Beard Harold Bradley Robert Bradley Peggy Briggs Ginger Brown Mary Lou Brown 34 Debbie Carvalho Tom Chivers Bruce MacGregor, our Boys State winner. Some of the high lights of the season can best be capped by each gome: Only two minutes remained on the clock when Dick Treglown went high into the air to snag a Rick Johnstone pass for their first 1962 victory against Andrew Hill. WASHINGTON vs NEWARK A 73-yard pass-run touchdown by Alex Blanca went for naught as the Huskies lost a 24-13 heartbreaker to Newark High in the first meet¬ ing between the two schools. Blanca, a junior line-plunger, took a screen pass from signal- caller Rich Johnstone and eluded two Knights at midfield and scampered down the sidelines to paydirt with the Knights in hot pursuit. Immediately following intermission, the Huskies needed only four plays to chalk up their second touchdown. This time Blanca and Dick Treglown reeled off big chunks of yardage before the lanky 6 ' 3 Treglown skirted left end for six points. Jim Ingram singled out Blanco, Treglown, Robbie Vares, and Dave Froines for their tremendous output. WASHINGTON vs IRVINGTON Irvington Hi fashioned a 18-12 triumph over our hard-luck Huskies for their first win of the year, despite outstanding efforts by Dick Treglown, Dale Mowreader, Robbie Vares and John Garza. Junior halfback Dale Mowreader tallied his first varsity touchdown rambling over would-be tacklers for six big points. Holding a 12-6 lead at halftime, Washington just plainly ran out of gas to the high-flying Vikings. Another junior, Alex Blanca, carried in for the other score. Despite the loss, the Huskies defense had the crowd on the edge of their seats all evening with their fierce tackling and desire, but Irvington was not denied and walked off with the victory. We at the Naval Academy don ' t consider a successful football season unless we beat Army said a rear admiral a decade ago. The same goes for the Washington Huskies in their annual backyard rivalry with the James Logan Colts. 12 point underdogs going into the classic, the Huskies, living up to their potential, outplayed the Colts in every phase of the game including the score 13-0 as 6,000 frenzied fans raved at every block, tackle, and run the Huskies made. Junior quarterback Rich Johnstone, engineered Washington to paydirt after the ensuing kickoff in just nine plays. With Alex Blanca running inside and senior Dick Treglown sweeping the ends, Jim Ingram ' s gridders scored with 5:15 left in the first quar¬ ter. Blanca capped the long march, bulling in from the eight. Individual honors bestowed on other team mem¬ bers were: Most Improved Player— Darryl Reina; Team Captain and Most Inspirational—Roy August; and Most Valuable Player and Co-Captain — Dick Treglown Scores Washington 62 Washington 39 Washington 52 Washington 44 Washington 50 Washington 30 Washington 57 Washington 49 Washington 57 Washington 51 Washington 0 Washington 31 Washington 45 MHAL Lincoln James Lick San Jose Willow Glen Washington Ayer Andrew Hill Irvington Newark Pioneer Logan Overfelt Newark 66 Amador 28 Overfelt 39 Aragon 69 Ayer 53 Willow Glen 43 Lincoln 67 Logan 41 San Jose 56 Hill 39 Pioneer (forf ' t) 2 Irvington 25 Lick 48 Standing ii 0 8 3 8 3 8 3 6 5 6 5 4 7 4 7 4 7 4 7 2 9 1 10 WASHINGTON vs. NEWARK Washington received a 66-62 jolt at the hands of hot-shooting Newark High in the first basketball game between the two district rivals. Robbie Vares, 6 ' 1 senior, scorched the net for twenty points, keeping the spirited Huskies within striking distance before a crowd of 1700 screaming fans. Washington crept within a bucket and then with a single shot Vares brought the score to 36-all. However Newark managed to move out in front once more, and Washington encountered its first Mount Hamilton League loss to the Knights but not before the Huskies put on the dazzling display of markmanship. WASHINGTON vs. LOGAN In this most memorable game, Washington seemed to follow the same victorious pattern as they called upon student body prexy, Greg Watson to pull it out of the bag, giving the fast surging Huskies a 31-25 win (over their bitter rival, Irvington), and a share of the Washington Union High School District crown. The win—knocking Irvington from the unbeaten list for district squads—shoved Washington upwards onto the high pedestal for a 50 percent interest to the throne. Dick Treglown, who put his name in the school record books as the greatest scorer in the history of Washington, succeeded in putting the Huskies in the lead for the first time that afternoon; and then Watson intervened and added his contribution. Treglown showed why he was most valuable player last year tallying 13 points in the low-scoring fracas which saw some highly-spirited Husky contingents come from behind for a glorious triumphant victory. Ray Garrison and his band of revitalized Huskies, led by mighty Dick Treglown, journeyed cross-town to Union City to give the James Logon Colts a point or two on the fine art of basketball. Washington ' s great Huskies returned home with their second straight vic¬ tory of 47-41. Garrison ' s crew banking in shots from every angle, could do nothing wrong the opening quarter while holding the Colts at an almost complete standstill. Although they were outmanned in the depart¬ ment, the Huskies made up for it with their outstanding and fierce toctics. Robbie Vares, Roy August, Darrell Reina, and Greg Watson all were standouts in their own right. This win gave Washington ' s Varsity its second consecutive triumph over the Colts. The 1962 cross country season saw the Husky distance runners cop an unprecedented fifth straight title and rank them one of the nation ' s best. Producing as many as two out¬ standing runners a year, Wil King kept his record intact with heralded Bruce Morse, Ron Selbo, and Roy Blea waltzing their contingent to the league title. By season ' s end, Morse had developed into one of north¬ ern California ' s top runners. Although plagued by various injuries, the Huskies still man¬ aged to breeze through the sea¬ son with only two losses. Look¬ ing for the future, King devel¬ oped many fine runners who will be welcomed back. Freshmen ' s Mitch Silva and Tom Moore turned in creditable jobs for first-year men. Supplying the needed incentive to lower their times were Tony Garcia, Chet Lloyd, Ron Clitherow, Danny Garcia, Wayne Lewis, Jesse Greenlee and Geary Burruss. Blea was selected captain. The fact that the track team suffered somewhat from lack of depth did not hinder the enthusiasm of our determined Huskies. Out¬ standing performers in the league included: Chet Lloyd in the mile; Rod Selbo in the 880; Randy Ranoa in the broadjump; Jim Henderson in the 100 and 220; and Alan Reshel in the pole vault and high jump. The team was also greatly aided by Bruce Morse in the mile, John Barraras in the 440, Jim Vaughan in the high jump and low hurdles. Without o doubt, the Washington Huskies rank as one of the top water polo powerhouses in northern California year in and year out. And this year was no exception. Bob Eustis and his band of Husky water poloists swept through Mount Hamilton Athletic League competition with an unblemished record for the third consecutive year and, as usual, dominated the mythical squad placing high school All- American ' s junior Sky Van Scoy, senior goalie Mike Mayland and senior defensive star Allen Logan. VanScoy and Mayland were selected along with 40 other top water polo players throughout the nation for this outstanding honor. Stressing a stingy defense, Washington dealt neme¬ sis James Lick a crushing 11-7 defeat giving the proud Huskies the crown for another year to reign among their many championship pennants. Van Scoy literally burned the nets game after game with his uncanny shots to give his mates easy vic¬ tories. He also was the league ' s scoring champ. Mayland, a 6-1, 160 pound goalie, and team cap¬ tain, proved a tough man for opponents to score and Logan time and again had the job of guarding the opposition ' s ace scorer. Logan was elected most valuable player while Van Scoy was selected the league ' s offensive star. For his outstanding efforts McCrary was accorded laurels on the all-league squad. He also was voted captain and most valuable player by his teammates for a job well done. The 1963 version of the Husky baseball team revealed a com¬ paratively young, but hustling group of ball players, with as many as four Sophomores appearing in the starting line-up in early season games. Pitching is definitely the team ' s greatest asset, with Junior Rick Johnstone and Senior Dick Treglown outstanding in this im¬ portant department. Larry Hollums, smooth fielding Junior short¬ stop, has sparkled defensively, while Senior Co-Captain Robbie Vares and Sophomore Doug Ladd have led the team offensively. Coach Snyder feels that if his young players can come through with some timely hitting and sound fielding, Washington could field a fine representative team before this year ' s season comes to a close. Washington ' s Frosh-Soph Baseball team proved to be a great asset to our athletic record this year. They have represented Washington in superb style and with the leadership of Coach Ingram are expected to finish with top honors.
