LINDA FORSYTH Second Annual Football Queen Shirley Sousa, Princess Leona Bohannon, Queen Many times during the contest I would open my I960 annual and look with respect at the Football Queen and picture myself in her place. It was a dream come true and a memory I shall always treasure. May I say how honored and proud I am to be the Football Queen for such a wonderful school and for my fellow classmates. I hope I have succeeded in the things my crown represents. Also, I ' d like to thank Sharon Barra- dough, my manager, whom I owe so much. The Senior Class and all of the girls would like to thank the P.T.A. for all their help in the contest. The Queen will be able to keep her crown until after the Senior Ball, and she also received luggage and charms. The Senior Class also bene¬ fited from the contest by $400. Again we give our thanks to the P.T.A. and all the girls who worked so hard. Washington High ' s exchange student program, sponsored by the American Field Service and designed to promote better relations among all nations, is now in its fourth year. This year ' s emissary of good will from Washington High School was Sharon Bromley, who spent last summer living with a Brazilian family and attending school there. In exchange Washington is privileged to have Marita Gabrilaki, a senior from Heraklion, Greece. Marita is staying at the home of Dr. Richard C. Purdy. The parliamen¬ tary procedure team earned its way through eliminations to the state finals, and Jim McKiernan pulled in a second place in the Tri-Regional finals of the state public speaking contest. And to show that not only talkers take laurels, Jerry Alonzo (pictured for left) cap¬ tured a certificate of award for skill in driving a tractor. Few campus organizations keep as active as the Future Farmers, under the guid¬ ance of Mr. Richard Mosbarger and Mr. Bill Raap. As if entering state-wide com¬ petition wasn ' t enough, members also get into the field and shop, as shown in these pictures, to carry out the learning that has been covered in the classroom. Another big moment came when the Hus¬ kies broke a scoring record that was 21 years old by trouncing the Samuel Ayer Trojans 47-0, who just a year ago trounced the orange and black 33-14. Football P. Rated as the number one team in the E.S.C.V.A.L., we lived up to expectations and came out league champions. In the Sunnyvale Invitational Christmas Tournament we placed third over many top teams. In the Penin¬ sula Tournament of Champions we were rated to take fourth place, but to the amazement of everyone we topped Carmel and Bishop O ' Dowd, two champion teams, and placed second, defeated only by Capachino in the last few seconds of the game by a score of 42 to 45. Although this was a team effort, there were many individual honors and records set. Ken Schramm was voted team captain and made All League second team, and the All-Star team at the Peninsula Tournament. Jack Gleason was a solid performer all season. Many honors were bestowed upon him. He was voted most valuable player by his teammates. He made the All-Star teams of the E.S.C.V.A.L., the Sunnyvale Tournament and the Pen¬ insula Tournament. Jack made the All-Central Coast team also. Roger Knobles and Bill Treglown were voted most-improved and most inspirationaI players, respectively, on the Husky varsity. Tom Churka led the team in assists (69) which was a new school record. Tom also tied Ken Schramm for recoveries ( 60). The Husky varsity of ' 60- ' 6 I set many team records. Russ Pierce and Dave Carter are the top returning men on the cinder squad. Pierce is league champion in the 100- and the 200- yard dashes. He is also league champion in the hop-step-jump, and finished fourth in the nation in this event. Carter, the league cham¬ pion in the mile, is looking forward to new heights this year, as he hopes to become one of the best in the state in this event. Jack Parson, who finished second in the league last year in the 440, seems almost certain to be league champion in this event next year.
