She is our foreign exchange student for this school year. South America can be proud of this girl with the friendly ways and shining personality. Graziella was chosen to come to the United States for a year of study because of her high scholastic standing. She would be attending the university this year if she were in her own country. She plans to study law and enter the diplomatic service. Washington is honored to have this outstanding student who is helping to bring about better relations between this country and Latin America. Dave Nickel became the first Washington High student to be sent to a foreign country as an exchange student. He lived most of the summer of 1958 with his adopted family in Germany, with side trips into Austria and Italy. It was a won¬ derful and valuable experience for a very deserving student. He returned home in time for school in September where he took over his duties as Senior Class President. As a means of getting a degree in forestry, he expects to play football for one of our west-coast colleges. Dave is one of our outstanding school leaders and Washington High is proud of his achievements. USS. The Hatchet Staff is composed of students who have completed the Journalism I course and who are selected by Hatchet Staff advisor, Mr. Collins. Journalism I is a class concerned only with developing the journalistic style of writing. The Hatchett Staff ap¬ plies these methods in issues of The Hatchet. The publication, The Hatchet, is the result of co-opera¬ tion between the print shop and the Hatchet Staff. The Hatchet not only gives these classes an opportunity to further their skills, but serves nicely as a student service. With the addition of the new press in the print shop, the size and shape of The Hatchet, a bi-weekly, has been radically changed. This year ' s Hatchet is approximately one-half the size of the previous editions and boast a newly styled nameplate. SM_ ME When was-the time Whot daij did you saij it coos—Thursday? Jan Sorenson and Bobbie Kaiser Student Directors Sue Croop, Barry Maurer Right: Steve Barnett, Nancy Thornburg l avUty ' PootltaM Co-Captains: Steve Barnett and Dave Nickel. This year Washington was very honored to have occupied eight out of twenty-two positions on the ESCVAL honor teams. Outstanding lineman of the year for the league was Dave Nickel. Bob Hidalgo was selected as outstanding halfback along with Bob Berry of Willow Glen. Included in the first offensive team were Grady Hudson, Stan Kalino, Steve Barnett, Dave Nickel and Bob Hidalgo. John Quaid, Jim McCammon and Dave Hawkins were among the first defensive team. Co-captains of this year ' s championship team were Dave Nickel and Steve Barnett; the only two players to be chosen All-Valley for two successive years. Jim Marin, playing in true Marin spirit, was a valuable safety man who saved Washington many times. In his first year of varsity, Bob Guardanapo proved to be a very important first string offensive player. The running and passing of one of Washington ' s best quarterbacks, Bob Hidalgo, was over half of the total W. U. H. S. offense. Ed Logan, a key runner with an average of over five yards per carry, constantly kept the fans on the edge of their seats. A great all-around football player was none other than Dave Hawkins. He made some tremendous runs, received key passes, and blocked like a demon. Ben Underwood, Joe Allen, Mack Smith, Al Roberts, and Bill Hughes plus the remainder of the team made the ' 58 Huskies the best varsity team W. U. H. S. has seen in many, many years. 106 Front Row — left to right: A. Roberts, B. Guardanapo, B. Hughes, M. Smith, J. Quaid. Back Row: T. Howells, D. Geren. The Washington Huskies have won their first championship in exactly ten years. After many disastrous seasons the Huskies have zoomed up to become the fifth rated team in all of Northern California. The Huskies offense broke the existing school record by more than twenty yards per game. Although these champions were not the highest scoring team in the league, they scored when it counted. Washington foes were held in an amazingly small seventy yards per contest. Only one opponent, Lin¬ coln, was able to pierce the great Huskie pass defense with any success whatsoever. In reviewing our season, if any one word could summerize it, that word would be determination. Time and time again the Huskies came from behind to win or halt the opponent in crucial situations. Tremen¬ dous effort on the part of every man brought hard fought for victories in eight of nine contests. Huskie opponents were ruined, and in many cases, demoralized by the greatest defensive team the S. C. V. A. L. has seen in some time. Congratulations Coach Walsh! First Row — left to right: B.
