Due to a shortage of busses our students are transported at three different times. First period begins at 8:10, second period at 9:05 and third period at 10:00. This necessitates three different lunch hours. About one-third of the student body goes to lunch at 10:55. The second lunch period starts at 11:45. The third group must wait until 12:35. The students who come first period go home at 2:15. Second period students are dismissed at 3:10, while third period students do not leave until 4:05. With 2300 students and 100 faculty members we are living under very crowded conditions. Every classroom is being used. The hallways are so crowded it is difficult to get to class on time. What we need is a new school. BOARD OF TRUSTEES Left to Right: A. E. Alameda, M. J. Bernardo, E. M. Grimmer Jr., F. J. Gorghi Jr., J. L. Berchem. This year has been a busy one for our loyal Board of Trustees. In addition to their regular duties they have something new to think of. That of course is the new school being planned for in Decoto. It is being financed by money voted in the last bond issue and state aid. It will be a four year high-school housing 1600 students. We expect it to be completed by September 1959. The school will be located on the corner of Decoto Road and Nursery Road. The credit for the plans of this beautiful new school goes to the Architects Falk and Booth. This new edifice will be a fitting monument to our local Board of Trustees who have given so freely of their time and effort. J. V. GOOLD District Superintendent 4 Virginia L. Even though we lost to Santa Clara, that game was our best of the season. Tribute must be paid to our defense that allowed our opponents an average of only 10 points per game. Since it was a predominantly junior team our future prospects are bright. Among the departing seniors who gave our team some drive are Eddie Marin and Hiro Kurotori. The varsity led by Captain Luciano Esquibel won 4 out of 5 regular meets this year losing only to Palo Alto the ultimate north coast champions. Last year ' s school record was broken by six of this year ' s seven varsity lettermen. Craig Weeks with a come through per¬ formance in the league final set the new school record at 10:40 for the nearly two-mile course at Stanford. This year ' s varsity team are: Craig Weeks, Luciano Esquibel, Jack GrifRn, Bill Nickels, Armando Mattos, Larry Arzie, Freddie Curtis. This year ' s Jr. Varsity swept the first five league places to end the season with a perfect score. Isaac Carter missepi the record by two seconds that was set earlier in the season by Rich Standal at I 1:29. The Jr. Varsity lettermen this year are: Spencer Vail, Marv Bermstein, Isaac Carter, Al Espinoza, Dave Margolas. WRESTLING Coach Graf turned out an excellent wrestling team this year. He was assisted by Coach Walsh. This was one of our big years in wrestling due largely to a boy named Steve Barnett who was elected captain for the year. Steve took fifth place in the Norfh Coast Section and first in the SCVAL. Ed Marin took third in SCVAL while Cuevas also took a third. Ron Dominguez was declared the outstanding senior wrestler. VARSITY WRESTLING Front Row: Z. Hernandez, B. Peton, F. Samorano, J. LeRoy Tacange was voted the most valuable player by his team mates. Coach McCaslin has done a very fine job in building such an aggressive team. VARSITY BASKETBALL This year ' s varsity has a better record than any Washington High team since 1952. The boys finished by defeating Fremont 48 to 43. This gave them a record of 5 wins and 6 losses. Hiro Kurotori was elected captain for the year. Gil Cobarruviaz was voted most valu¬ able player. This was Coach Albaugh ' s first year and-the school is very proud of his record. J. V. BASKETBALL Coach Scholl in his first year at Washington has produced an out¬ standing JV basketball team. The boys have a record of 9 wins and 6 losses. The JV team is made up of boys who should be a big help to next year ' s varsity. Joe Allen was elected captain of the year and most valuable player. SCORES W 39 Samuel Ayer 14 W 32 Mt. BASEBALL TENNIS With the return of but three lettermen from the ' 57 team, Washington ' s tennis fortunes were placed in the hands of enthusiastic but inexperienced netters. The Varsity schedule brought the Huskies against such tennis schools as Paig Alto, Carlmont, Camden, Bellarmine, and Los Altos. The singles work was given to Dick Fritch, Steve Ebbage, Larry Bahr, Gary Christensen, and Den¬ nis McKiernan. Doubles players Joe Monte de Ray, Jim McKiernan, Ken Miller, Ed Churka and Paul Orsetti gave the team fine double combinations.
